smal hilside cottage overlooking port antonio and the carribean sea ..walking distance to transportation, markets, beaches and other attractions..the cottage is 150 steps thru the jungle up a hill from the car park...comfortable walking shoes with good gripping soles are advisable....breakfast can be provided for this cottage,as its cooking facilities are limited..this cottage is ideally suited for one person or a couple..some visitors take a night or two to get used to the sounds of early morning roosters and dogs, the occasional sound system..usually muted..during the day raucous parrots and woodpeckers are the main noisemakers..water is not hot unless u heat it on the stove..linens and towels supplied..internet access..roof deck..air is conditioned by fans and sea breezes..long pants and socks are advised in the early evenings..if u are allergic to insect bites,u might want to consider other options...finally,a tip on luggage..suitcases are unwieldy and impractical due to the steep terrain from carpark to cottage..backpacks are advised..this cottage currently is the only one with in house wifi..because of its small size,it is ideal for a single traveler..best to arrive before dark..
Had a great time at Mike's!! Highly recommended!
The cottages are fantastic. I stayed in the mid rooftop one. Million dollar view, very comfortable bed, all very clean and safe!
Mike is really helpful with directions and tips. His Jamaican friend Robin helps guests figure out where things are in Port Antonio. A great expert, who shows you the best beaches and places of interest, food and all you need.
Port Antonio turned out to be a great place to really get to know Jamaica. It's not the luxurious resort place where you're not sure where you are in the Carribean. This town has the great vibe. This is where you want to be if you want to really get to know Jamaica and be by the best beaches on the island.
The cottages are located right in the middle of the town and at the same time away from all the bustle. Hundred or so steps up, and you're in the middle of the jungle!!
Highly highly recommended!!!
Off the beaten path this exquisite hidden jungle paradise is a dream out of a story book. As you march up the old stone steps the sounds of Port Antonio fade and the array of wildlife lights the atmosphere. The rooms are exquisite and feel as though they are carved right into the mountain side. Michael and his family are genuine and down to earth people and always have you laughing and eating well! Will always return from d and I! The view is perhaps the greatest on earth!
We had a great stay at Mango Ridge. It was a great home base for fun adventures in the Port Antonio area. Michael was a great host and super friendly and knowledgeable. We look forward to going back there again!
We stayed at the second cottage, the steps are kinda high but defenitly worth the view. Walking distance from shopping and restaurant. Nice neighberhood. Had a good stay at michaels place. Thanks!
This place was the best in Jamaica. Mike and his Family are very nice and helpful and showed us many things in Port Antonio. The appartments were clean and nice and the view over the see was very awesome.
We highly recommend these cottages to anyone visiting Port Antonio. If you're in PA instead of MoBay, you've already made the excellent decision to try to see real Jamaica instead of staying at the all-inclusive resorts, so (like us) you won't be put off by the mosquitoes and moths, the lack of air conditioning, or the many many stairs you take to get up here. Instead you'll be blown away by the beauty of the view from the roof of the middle cottage, the bunch of bananas that sat on Michael's porch we ate as a snack every time we passed, or the pleasant breeze you'll feel sitting on the balcony of the upper cottage. Michael was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The only hiccup we had was the wifi going out for a couple days of the week we stayed there, which made it difficult to connect with our friends who were staying in town; it wasn't Michael's fault, and he very nicely lent us his tablet with cellular internet service in order to send them an email. Also, the wifi wasn't accessible from the cottages themselves, so we hung out outside Michael's house to use it; he and his kids were always welcoming and friendly. A great place to stay and perfect launch point for our trips to beaches and waterfalls nearby.
We stayed at Mango Ridge for four nights. We rented the two top cottages for all four nights and the middle cottage for two nights as well - there were 4 to 7 of us traveling together. While it is true that there are many steps - it is a wonderful hike up a jungle hillside. The views from the cottages are stunning - and we actually found there were less mosquitoes here than at other places we had stayed during our trip. Michael was a great host and provided us with group access to a beautiful beach, fresh eggs in the morning, and directions and help for anything we could want. The cottages are clean, basic and somewhat rustic. The privacy is wonderful and we really enjoyed waking up to the birds singing. Our favorite cottage is the second to the top - the one that has the upstairs sleeping quarters. Our second favorite is the middle cottage. We would def go back.
We were visiting Michael and his wonderful family of three days, and these were the best days of our trip to Jamaica. Beautiful two-storey house stands on a hill overlooking the sea and is in a great location. I sincerely grateful to this wonderful family and of course I advise everyone to stay in Mango cottages!
Michael was the perfect host. The cottage was great, very clean and charming. We had everything we need there. The view was spectacular! Michael got us fresh eggs from his own chickens for breakfast. The cottage was was up on the hills and it was perfect for chilling out Jamaica style. Port Antonio was great for people who want to experience the real Jamaica away from the touristy resorts.
Be sure to paint something on the wall of the cottage before you leave.
I traveled across the North coast of Jamaica with my girlfriend for a week with two scheduled nights in Port Antonio. This was absolutely our favourite place on the entire island, and this is largely due to our stay with Michael. The cottage was exactly as advertised, if not better. A short hike up the hill, and you find some tranquility from the streets. A short walk down the hill and you are in the center of the city experiencing the best of Jamaica.
Michael was a great host. He gave us great ideas for places to visit, connected us with other travelers and enabled a great time in Port Antonio.
If you are going to Jamaica, spend a night at the Mango Cottages!
