About this listing
A large and sunny twin/double room in an apartment of a grand house in the North Oxford Victorian Conservation Area. Walk across the nearby University Parks to town centre, colleges and museums. Free street parking with a visitor's parking permit.
Like other houses in the area the house was built in Victorian Gothic style by St. John's College - for academics when they were allowed to have families about 1850. It was converted into 5 flats in 1970s and recently refurbished keeping original Victorian features. Two south-facing sash windows overlook the rear gardens. The room contains two single beds (90 cm wide), which can be joined to form a comfortable double, as well as a two-seater sofa. The room is perfectly quiet and has a desk, should you have any work to do while visiting.
My flat is on the first floor with great views of trees and other grand Victorian houses.
Guests in two rooms share a WC/ bath/ shower room off the corridor and an additional WC on the landing. The fully equipped kitchen/dining room is available for breakfast (cereals, tea, coffee, orange juice, fruit & real bread or bagels). Cooking in the early evening is possible. Longer term guests may use the washing machine.
Interaction with Guests
As little as you'd like but available to answer your questions should you need my help. I'm mostly at home working on my computer or in the garden.
The house is on a quiet, tree-lined street off Banbury Road, in the desirable North Oxford Victorian Suburb Conservation Area, beside the University Parks and the river Cherwell, a 10-15 minute walk to the city centre across the Parks. Exit through the gate on the other side of the Parks to visit the Natural History Museum or the Pitt Rivers Museum, then the Sheldonian and the Bodleian Library. Browse the bookshops on Broad Street, visit colleges, or the Ashmolean museum. Alternatively, you could linger in the Parks watching cricket or punters on the river. If you fancy punting, the Cherwell Boat House is a 5-minute walk away. There are many nice cafés and pubs in the city centre and a wonderful choice of fresh food available at the Covered Market. In the evenings, you might take in a concert at the Holywell Music Room or at the Sheldonian or catch a film at the arthouse cinema in Jericho. The house is a perfect base for friends or families exploring the city or simply relaxing and enjoying the summer in peaceful surroundings.
There are bike stands in the drive and free parking in the street with guest permits which I provide. North Parade, just up the road, has a useful grocery store, a deli, pubs and cafes, as well 3 restaurants to choose from.
Buses in all directions leave from the top of the road, should you wish to go further afield: Woodstock and the Bleinham Palace. Buses to London leave from the central bus station 15 minute walk away.
Other Things to Note
There are bike stands in the drive and car parking in the road - free with guest permits I would provide.
No pets & no smoking in the house but you can smoke in the garden or the driveway. Breakfast (orange juice, toast, cereal, tea & coffee) is self-service. Your dirty dishes after breakfast go in the dishwasher and the food back in the fridge.
We didn't meet Wanda, but she had organised everything. The room is indeed very spacious. We used the beds as one double bed, which was not super comfortable, but okay for two days. Everything was clean and welcoming and the house is very beautiful.
The location is very good for Oxford, it is within walking distance for the city centre. Breakfast is self-service, we had cereals and milk, which for us was totally fine.
Overall a great stay, although I personally found it a little bit overpriced, but that's normal in Oxford. I knew the city already, so I was aware of the generally high prices. The large room would totally be great for somebody who also needs to study and work, as it has a desk and the Wifi works really well.
We didn't meet Wanda, but she was very friendly and welcoming by email and phone. Her flat is in a lovely elegant house in a wide, quiet street. The guest room has a sofa and a desk as well as fast Wi-Fi and very comfortable twin beds.
The kitchen is spacious and modern, and Wanda provides plenty of breakfast things, as well as guide books to the city.
The city centre is only about 15 minutes' walk away.
The room was clean, big and very nice! We each got two towels to use, Wanda provided parking permits for our car and we could take every kind of food we wanted to (bagels, cereals, cookies, apples...). We had a wonderful stay and I highly recommend Wanda as a host! Thank you!
Super friendly. Beautifull house. Spacious room. Nice breakfast table set in the morning. Amazing neighborhood. Close to the city centre, walked everytime.. Either by the park (beautifull) or the main road. Awesome experience, I'll come back to Oxford one day and if I'm allowed I would like to stay here again in a hearthbeat!
Our stay at Wanda's was thoroughly enjoyable. Wanda always saw to it that we were comfortable and that our needs were met. She would set the table for our breakfast the night before and made sure that there was sufficient food for breakfast. The kitchen is very well-stocked and clean, and the room we stayed in is bright, airy and spacious, which made our appreciation of summer that much more enjoyable! Thank you for being such a great hostess, Wanda!
A very nice host. The flat is well located and in easy walking distance to Oxford. We had a nice stay--thanks, Wanda!
I had a very peaceful evening staying in Wanda's apartment, especially after a day full of visiting Universities, thank you. It is situated in a beautiful area. Perfect.
