About this listing
Five minute walk from transit, in the Heart of Chicago, near groceries, restaurants, and the Western Avenue Pink Line train stop, our place is the budget traveler's dream! With two connected bedrooms and private entrance, there is space for four.
The Garden Suite is perfect for groups or those who want space and privacy. Just like the rest of the house, it is cozy, casual, and comfy, but with a lot more space! The suite has a private bedroom with a full bed, that adjoins to a living room with a pillow top queen bed, a small sofa, a coat closet and a sweet little rocking chair. Other highlights include a mini-fridge, room to lock your bicycles, and your own private entrance to the street. Please note that your rooms are in a three bedroom flat with a SHARED bathroom and kitchen.
We clean the house daily with all non-toxic ingredients and all linens are soft and washed without perfumes. The house is over a hundred years old, so it has lots of charm. Please don't assume that the discolorations of age are a lack of cleanliness. While we make every effort to make sure that all surfaces are disinfected on a daily basis, you will be sharing the space, and while our guests are awesome across the board, the occasional person may not clean up perfectly after themselves. What we provide is a cozy and charming affordable place shared with really nice people who do their best to make sure you enjoy your time in Chicago.
Check-in is from 2 pm to 10 pm. We will arrange specific times with you in advance, based on your travel plans.
Guests have access to wifi, shared kitchen and bathroom, as well as the balcony and back garden. If your dates aren't available, please click on our host page to see the other rooms in the house!
Please read through all the information we have posted here, as it will answer many questions you may have that involve check-in and check-out times, house rules, room descriptions, parking and public transportation, and directions to our place. We are at the WESTERN stop on the PINK LINE.
Interaction with Guests
While we love meeting people from all over the world and sharing our own cultural heritage, you are totally welcome to shut the door on the world and rest. Our hosting style is laid-back, hands-off, but available.
Heart of Chicago/Pilsen, is one of the best affordable neighborhoods in the city, because it is only 20 minutes from the Loop and you can find the best Mexican and Italian food, local coffee shops, small galleries and museums, bike rental, Harrison and Douglas Parks, and unique vintage stores, all in a walkable neighborhood 15 minutes from downtown. Not to be missed are the famous Pilsen murals, which cover the facades of central European architecture throughout the area.
There are grocery stores, laundromats and ATM's within a five minute walk from our front door.
The Mexican Art Museum is a must-see, free and within walking distance, and the tacos in the area are unforgettable. Pilsen is famous for its old Czech architecture and the houses are really unique. Our neighborhood is covered in murals, and walking around is a must.
Our place is conveniently located near major public transit routes to downtown Chicago. There is free street parking and divvy bike rental around the corner. You are a two minute walk from the 49 bus, a five minute walk from the 21 and 60, and ten minutes from the Pink Line WESTERN stop, which takes you to downtown Chicago (also known as “The Loop”) in 20 minutes.
A wintertime note for drivers: between December 1st and April 1st, in Chicago, there is a parking ban on major streets, when snow is over 2 inches; however, residential street parking is widely available.
For those guests who take public transportation, a valuable online resource is (website hidden), where you can find arrival times of all CTA trains and buses.

Your quaint antique writing desk overlooks the courtyard, so you can study or work with a view of the street.
Our hosts were very kind and helpful and the place was clean, comfortable, and cozy. I love the whole look of the houses here. As 3 young women traveling together we were not crazy about the neighborhood, and our taxi driver said he normally would not pick up and drop off from here due to safety (but he was very accommodating too - everyone in Chicago is so nice and very helpful). You also cannot park near the house and I would always prefer to have a car nearby. Overall, however, it was a pleasant, homey experience.
Hi Eden, I'm glad you were comfy in our home. While the neighborhood of Pilsen had a bad reputation in the past, that was a few decades ago now. There are law enforcement statistics from last year that rate Pilsen comparably with Logan Square, a gentrified neighborhood on the north side of Chicago. As we live here, and are familiar with our neighbors and their children, who play safely outside during the day and night, we urge our guests to examine actual data. Though we are sorry that you judged our neighborhood to have a lack of safety, we are glad that you love the look of the houses here :-)
It was a nice host. We felt welcome. We had trouble with our flights, but we were allowed to arrived later then decided. 30 minutens to downtown. The area was ok.
Bed was comfortable and the apartment was nice, you can look the door.
Thanks for the host
We stayed in the garden suite for one night and it was a very good experience. The rooms were clean and nice with all you need. Both Shaun and Chris were very friendly and helpful during our stay and I would recommend the garden suite to others.
We met Chris on our stay. He was very friendly and helpful! We also had to change our plans last minutes but they made everything so smooth and stress-free. Always respond quickly. Clean and quite room. Thank you very much!
Very nice hosts. Everything went fine.
It was a pleasure to stay there
Easy check-in and check-out. My host was very kind and rode with me to find parking, as I had a car. Accommodations were as described and simple. Love all the light in the garden suite! It is a shared space - with 2 other bedrooms and 1 shared bathroom for all 3 bedrooms. I hadn't really paid attention to that in the booking - and little piece of good-to-know info.
Thank you Shaun and Chris. You made it easy!
Chris met us at the door and showed us around the space. Everything was very thorough and you could tell they had done this before! Though parking on the street was unavailable due to permit zones, the next street over had free parking. We were exceptionally close to public transit and could get downtown with ease. The hosts gave all information needed and everything in the flat was labeled in case you forgot something!

About the Host, Shaun
Hi! I'm Shaun, a retired ESL teacher and visual artist who has lived in Spain, Mexico, and all over the US. When I was a kid, my dream was to go around the world in 80 days. So far, I've only traveled through the US, Europe, Mexico and Pakistan. Places I'd like to visit next? Washington DC, Cyprus, Portugal, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires.
I live a mellow, healthy lifestyle, with loads of ever evolving interests: meeting new people from everywhere, urban hiking, languages, reading, film, cooking, yoga, football, blogging, art, permaculture/gardening, coffee, music, traveling, and just taking it easy.
My hosting style is laid-back, hands off but available, so you feel like this is your place, but also know that I am here if you need me. I work online from home, so finding me is easy. Having taught international students for many years, I can get along with people from anywhere and love making connections. You never know when you will meet a life-long friend from a city you never heard of.
