About this listing
Campsie is an awesome area about 12kms from the centre of Sydney. It's cheap, very Asian influenced and super fun! Not touristy at all. Our old guesthouse "Scruffy" is falling down around our ears but in the mean time we offer cheap, private rooms.

This is a listing for one bedroom on the second floor of Scruffy Old Campsie Guesthouse. The second floor rooms are nicer than the downstairs rooms – they are set up like they would be in a share house complete with a separate entrance to the floor. It is a bit more of a “home” like environment. We are one of the cheapest places to stay simply because our building is “scruffy” and “old” as the name says!
Room 1 has one double beds and a single and can easily fit three people, or a small family if needed. There is also a study desk, cupboard and set of drawers, and bar fridge.
It's a four bedroom house with one bathroom on this level. There is a common lounge/dining area. The house is a little dated - the kitchen is 1960's and showing some wear and tear. The bathroom is also a little outdated, but fully functional and clean. The house is kept to better-than-hostel standards, but not five star hotel standard. Everyone who stays here is expected to help keep the common areas clean. A house cleaner is provided once a week to help with cleaning.
I do not live on the property so this booking is suitable for those who are truly independent travelers and need little assistance.
There are usually some longer term guests in the house either upstairs or downstairs and they are also great sources of information on the local areas.
If you are easy going and don’t mind making new friends then this place will be ideal – some of our guests have stayed as long as ten months!
Rooms are fully furnished and linen is provided, along with private fridges. The lounge room has cable TV/Foxtel. There is however no air conditioning – just fans. We have oil heaters and electric blankets for winter.
You would share the courtyard and laundry with the others on this property and the verandah too. We are not at all a party guesthouse so this is perfect for those who are working or studying or who value privacy and a relaxed environment.
There is an outside laundry with coin operated washing machines and dryers. Smoking is only outside in the courtyard.
Wifi is free although sometimes a bit patchy upstairs so you are welcome to go downstairs to get better signals.
Their room, a common TV area, common kitchens and common bathrooms, common laundry, common wifi.
Interaction with Guests
House managers Helen and Megan are very friendly and available by phone. They visit daily to help out as needed.
Campsie itself is not a tourist area. It's a mostly Asian area with a tonne of great local shops, supermarkets, a shopping mall, cafes and restaurants. All only a five min walk away. It's cheaper to stay where the locals live and eat than in the city or at the beaches!
From here it will take you 20-30 mins on a train into the city centre and about 40mins-1 hour to get to the beaches. You can catch the Burwood 400 bus from the Airport directly to our house making it very cheap.
Other Things to Note
Please use the magic word "unicorn" in your reply so I know you have read the entire booking.
PLEASE NOTE: We try our best to give you the room you booked but due to the unpredictable nature of juggling multiple guests who extend alongside upcoming new bookings you may be given a different room in the same guesthouse. If this would cause issues for you please consider other AirBnB properties. In trying to be fair we do not ask existing guests who love us to move out of rooms for new guests if a similar room in the house is instead empty
"Photos on the site may differ slightly from the actual room as we replace furniture and bedding as needed and have fun rearranging at times."
No smoking inside the house. Smoking only allowed in courtyard or verandah. A full set of house rules will be provided upon check-in.
I was moved to another room upstairs without fridge. But it was great anyway. I had a few good days in Campsie and enjoyed my stay. Everything was clean and good value for money.
Great cheap place to live. Clean house with all the facilities you would need, and nice accommodating hosts. Only a 10 minute walk to the train station that takes you right into the city.
The Campsie Guesthouse was a great place to stay. Not fancy but right in the middle of things. A quick train ride to the Harbor area that is fantastic. I stayed a month. Was on the second floor with three other people. We cooked together in the communal kitchen and watched sports programs together on the TV. I would definitely stay at the Guesthouse again.
The room I had booked was unavailable and I was given another room downstairs. Didn't look like the one that was pictured in the ad at all and was a lot smaller. As the name says the place is old and scruffy but clean and relatively comfortable. Heaters and electric blankets were provided.
Good value considering one has a private room.
I'm sorry about the room mixup. We had guests extend and had to juggle a bit. If we'd known you weren't happy we would have juggled a bit more to fix this issue or worked out a different solution. We do struggle a bit with bookings that are booked in advance and then trying to help out guests who want to keep staying on. I guess it is a nice problem to have in that everyone likes the house but clearly here we could have done better for you.
I was changed to Room #3, which was fine with me. It ain't the Ritz, but it was just what I needed for my 10 day visit to Australia. The room was large and clean. The bed was firm and comfortable. I loved having my own little fridge! Plenty of hot water for showers. Helen & Megan welcomed me, with plenty of written & in person info. John was helpful. I was told the intenet could get 'iffy' but I had no problems at any time. I was glad to be downstairs where I understand it works better. Their system for accommodating a bunch of people worked well for me. Everything I needed was within walking distance. I'll return in August if it's available.
Very big rooms and in a good location. Pretty close to the Campsie train station, lots of good restaurants and the other guests were friendly.
The room was great and the bed was very comfortable. There were plenty of cooking utensils and everyone was very friendly. Jody gave us very good advice and was and excellent host. The room was excellent value and the location is great with cheap groceries and public transport close by.

About the Host, Jody
I'm a 37 year old solo mama of one boy, Elliott, who is five years old. I was looking for some way to stay home and raise my son without working long hours so I started renting out rooms in my personal house. That grew so busy I found an old guesthouse, and then another one, and now it's a business!
I live at The Rex with my son and our dogs currently. We also have a house manager couple, Helen and Megan who manage the Sydney business.
We're a friendly bunch and happy to help you get settled in Sydney or Tamworth and give you some local knowledge. If we are busy then we have instructions on how to check yourself in without our help and we will try and say hi during your first few days!
We love independent travellers, students and families who aren't looking for "the party scene" but want more a friendly, home like vibe. We're very LGBT friendly, love people from all backgrounds and children of all ages. The guesthouses are older style, very basic and clean with a bit of character. Most importantly the guesthouses are safe and in local areas!
