The Space

Eco-friendly and lakeside, this five year old straw bale home has three bedrooms, a sleeping loft (for kids only), a cozy tea nook if you need an extra bed or art studio with futon if needed. Green building techniques and earth friendly products were used when we built our home resulting in a unique, environmentally friendly, energy efficient shelter. "The LakeHouse" is a fully furnished family home with all amenities, drive-way parking, on the lake in a community close to downtown. There are stunning mountain views and mesmerizing water views of Kootenay Lake from our home.

We are lakefront, so you have access to our private dock and waterfront. We are on a walking/biking path, and a short walk to Lakeside park, the public beach and a longer walk (or short drive) downtown to stores and cafes. We are a 25 minute drive from amazing powder at Whitewater Ski Hill, a 35 minute drive from Ainsworth Hot Springs and walking distance to local hiking and biking trails.

The kitchen comes fully equipped with cooking basics, environmentally friendly dish soap, coffee machine, dishwasher and more. There is a also a mudroom to store your gear (for biking, skiing, hiking or paddling). We have a flatscreen TV (for movies), but no cable and have wireless internet.

Come and enjoy a unique holiday in this beautiful arts town full of skiers, nature lovers and artists. Relax by our warm, cozy masonry stove on winter evenings after a day of skiing powder or enjoy your coffee in the summer on our outdoor porch before your morning paddle. If you are interested in a sailboat charter, please inquire at time of booking.

Monthly security deposit is $800.00. Children are welcome at no extra charge.

We call this place HOME so it is lived in. We are sometimes away or out on the lake sailing with our 8 year old son and 9 year old daughter and dog, and when we are, our home is available to call it your OWN.

  • We could not have picked a better place to base our ski vacation! This is an amazingly comfortable home with great amenities and spectacular views from almost all windows. The glow of the Masonry stove/fireplace made us feel so comfortable after a long day on the slopes and warmed the entire home.

The home is situated right on Kootenay Lake and offers expansive long range views. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the various wildlife which included different species of waterfowl and even a Beaver swimming along the shore! The home is connected to a footpath which meanders along the lake and was a nice way to see all of the lakefront homes in the area.

The town of Nelson was a joy to explore. The people are incredibly friendly and the selection of great shops and restaurants impressed us. The free Ferry ride from Balfour to Crawford bay was a really fun side-trip and it is highly recommended!

Erica and family made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The home is very clean and well organized with a great kitchen for cooking in. We will surely be returning in the future!

  • We had a terrific time during our one week+ stay in Nelson. The house is simply incredible - warm, cozy and very creatively put together with lots of light and wonderful views. The layout is very open allowing for family/friends to spread out across the kitchen, dining and living areas so that you always feel part of the group without ever feeling crowded. This was clearly a well loved family home and we thank Erica, Mike and family for letting us share their very special place. We also discovered that Nelson is a pretty unique town in a beautiful mountain setting. The people were all friendly, the downtown was bustling and vibrant, and the views were always spectacular. Add in some of the best powder skiing around up at Whitewater along with some terrific cross country trails and you have a perfect spot for a winter holiday!

  • We truly enjoyed our 4-night stay at Erica's beautiful home. The lake-front location is excellent and everything was exactly as advertised. Erica and her family made sure we had everything we could have needed or wanted for our family get-away and they all gave us a thorough tour of the house.
This is one of our best finds on airbnb and it made our time in Nelson extremely relaxing and homey - it was a wonderful stay. We highly recommend Erica's home if you are planning a trip to Nelson.

  • What a beautiful home! We truly enjoyed every minute of our stay here and could not have been happier or more comfortable. Erika, Mike, Indigo and Saxton are a beautiful family and were so welcoming to us, including a special fresh Kokanee catch from Saxton on the morning of our arrival which we thoroughly enjoyed that night. We loved the porch upstairs and what a treat to be able to sleep there every night. We stayed with our 17 year old son and we all agreed that it was a perfect place for our family. We will definitely stay here again when we come back to Nelson. Thank you Erika and Mike for everything!!

  • Our family really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home on Kootenay Lake. The location is stunning as it is right on the lake, but quietly removed from the downtown bustle. The home is artfully decorated and designed with the warmth and uniqueness of a strawbale home. We didn't want to leave...but went outdoors and enjoyed the splendid fall colors of the Nelson area.
What a great Thanksgiving w/e. Thanks for the opportunity to share your home.

  • The lakefront home is as beautiful as the pictures! Erica and Mike were very cordial hosts whose darling children gave us a tour of their beautifully designed straw bale home. It has wonderful amenities- a great kitchen, plus a deck and sitting room with breathtaking views. Erica is a talented artist whose work is nicely displayed throughout the home.

They also provided ample information about the lovely town of Nelson which proved to be very helpful- hikes, cycling, restaurant, galleries, etc.
