Straw bale eco home on Kootenay lake, situated in Nelson, British Columbia - an arts town in the Kootenay region. Perfect setting for exploring the mountains, the pristine lake or powder skiing at Whitewater.
Eco-friendly and lakeside, this five year old straw bale home has three bedrooms, a sleeping loft (for kids only), a cozy tea nook if you need an extra bed or art studio with futon if needed. Green building techniques and earth friendly products were used when we built our home resulting in a unique, environmentally friendly, energy efficient shelter. "The LakeHouse" is a fully furnished family home with all amenities, drive-way parking, on the lake in a community close to downtown. There are stunning mountain views and mesmerizing water views of Kootenay Lake from our home.
We are lakefront, so you have access to our private dock and waterfront. We are on a walking/biking path, and a short walk to Lakeside park, the public beach and a longer walk (or short drive) downtown to stores and cafes. We are a 25 minute drive from amazing powder at Whitewater Ski Hill, a 35 minute drive from Ainsworth Hot Springs and walking distance to local hiking and biking trails.
The kitchen comes fully equipped with cooking basics, environmentally friendly dish soap, coffee machine, dishwasher and more. There is a also a mudroom to store your gear (for biking, skiing, hiking or paddling). We have a flatscreen TV (for movies), but no cable and have wireless internet.
Come and enjoy a unique holiday in this beautiful arts town full of skiers, nature lovers and artists. Relax by our warm, cozy masonry stove on winter evenings after a day of skiing powder or enjoy your coffee in the summer on our outdoor porch before your morning paddle. If you are interested in a sailboat charter, please inquire at time of booking.
Monthly security deposit is $800.00. Children are welcome at no extra charge.
We call this place HOME so it is lived in. We are sometimes away or out on the lake sailing with our 8 year old son and 9 year old daughter and dog, and when we are, our home is available to call it your OWN.
* The house actually sleeps 4 or more but two of the beds are kids beds in kids bedrooms. One king size bed is available. We also have a sleeping nook and a futon that moves into the studio when we have guests.
We expect you to treat our family home as you would treat yours. We built this home ourselves, with much energy and effort and hope you will respect this. We trust you will keep our home intact, clean and in the shape that you found it. We have a good community and neighbours so we prefer not to rent it to those who are looking for a 'party' house. We ask you clean up, be gentle and most importantly, enjoy yourselves.
We had an amazing winter experience in their absolutely stunning family home. If you get the chance, this is the place you must stay in Nelson. It's great location and stunning surrounding scenery are mind blowing. We especially loved laying in the sun on the private dock on the lake. Highly recommend!
Thank you to Erica, Mike and kids for giving us the opportunity to stay in their home. It was a great base for our best family vacation, so far. We would go back to both Nelson and the house in a heartbeat. The house is beautiful, spacious and fully equipped, as advertised. It is located a short drive from excellent hiking spots, shops, restaurants and community facilities (pool, library, etc.). The straw bale insulation does indeed keep the place cool in hot weather and warm in cool weather; we experienced both. The ecological design and the beautiful art of the house make it calming and inspiring as well as very comfortable.
The backyard trampoline, the lake, the kids’ loft and the nearby park – complete with outdoor gym – kept our boys (aged 12 and 9) occupied for hours on end. My wife enjoyed long-early morning hikes while I lounged around the house drinking the locally-roasted coffee that Erica and Mike gave us as a welcoming gift. I was constantly entranced by the stunning views of the lake and the “Orange Bridge” through the back windows and from both of the large and comfortable porches. Every weather change produced what seemed to be a completely different view.
Beautiful home, beautiful location and wonderful hosts. I highly recommend this amazing home to anyone visiting lovely nelson. The hosts are warm, friendly and extremely hospitable.
The reservation was canceled 100 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
We could not have picked a better place to base our ski vacation! This is an amazingly comfortable home with great amenities and spectacular views from almost all windows. The glow of the Masonry stove/fireplace made us feel so comfortable after a long day on the slopes and warmed the entire home.
The home is situated right on Kootenay Lake and offers expansive long range views. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the various wildlife which included different species of waterfowl and even a Beaver swimming along the shore! The home is connected to a footpath which meanders along the lake and was a nice way to see all of the lakefront homes in the area.
The town of Nelson was a joy to explore. The people are incredibly friendly and the selection of great shops and restaurants impressed us. The free Ferry ride from Balfour to Crawford bay was a really fun side-trip and it is highly recommended!
Erica and family made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The home is very clean and well organized with a great kitchen for cooking in. We will surely be returning in the future!
We had a terrific time during our one week+ stay in Nelson. The house is simply incredible - warm, cozy and very creatively put together with lots of light and wonderful views. The layout is very open allowing for family/friends to spread out across the kitchen, dining and living areas so that you always feel part of the group without ever feeling crowded. This was clearly a well loved family home and we thank Erica, Mike and family for letting us share their very special place. We also discovered that Nelson is a pretty unique town in a beautiful mountain setting. The people were all friendly, the downtown was bustling and vibrant, and the views were always spectacular. Add in some of the best powder skiing around up at Whitewater along with some terrific cross country trails and you have a perfect spot for a winter holiday!
We truly enjoyed our 4-night stay at Erica's beautiful home. The lake-front location is excellent and everything was exactly as advertised. Erica and her family made sure we had everything we could have needed or wanted for our family get-away and they all gave us a thorough tour of the house.
This is one of our best finds on airbnb and it made our time in Nelson extremely relaxing and homey - it was a wonderful stay. We highly recommend Erica's home if you are planning a trip to Nelson.
We're a family of four, interested in renting our home while we're off on adventures. We love to ski, sail and climb -enjoying most outdoor pursuits with our children, age 10 & 8. We enjoy green living, building sustainable structures, and focus on living a simple life in a small arts town in British Columbia. We are most inspired by our children, good friends, close family, innovative art and the natural environment.
