The Space

Our boutique style B&B is an old country cottage standing in an established 1 acre garden, 1km from the Atlantic Ocean, 7kms from the nearest rural town of Louisburgh and 25kms from Westport Co. Mayo. Westport was recently voted by readers of the Irish Times the best place to live in Ireland.
The accomodation is adjoining the hosts' residence and comprises a cosy bedroom with en suite shower room. The accompanying sitting room, which is for guests' sole use, has a lovely stone fireplace and wood burning stove, balancing traditional charm with a modern contemporary style. You will have your own entrance and key so you can come and go as you please and this affords a lot of independence and privacy. Tea and coffee making facilities are available together with a pullout guest bed, should there be a third guest. There is also a T.V., DVD player and radio / cd. We have bikes available for your use, which includes rain gear, a rucksack and helmets. There are some fantastic cycle routes right on the doorstep, as well as the Greenway cycle path which runs all the way from Westport to Achill Sound. If water sports is your thing, we also have a surf board that you can borrow.
The spectacular scenery all around us is second to none and consists of breathtaking seascapes and panoramic views of the mountains of Co Mayo, including Croagh Patrick which is only a stone's throw away.
Opportunities for many activities are in abundance right on our doorstep such as hillwalking, rambling, cycling, surf and rock fishing, surfing, sea kayaking, horse riding etc. most of which we have first hand experience of.
The local town of Louisburgh is host to some great pubs, cafes and restaurants, together with a supermarket, library ( with internet access ) and the Granuaile Heritage Centre.
If you'd like a packed lunch to take with you on a day out, that can be arranged. In all our cooking, our emphasis is on home cooked food. Don't expect the 'full Irish' breakfast, instead look forward to a continental style breakfast with home baked scones, pancakes, cereals and fresh fruit and yogurt. Also, when our hens are laying, fresh free range eggs!
We are a relaxed, easy going family with two young children ( 11 and 10 ) and are very flexible when it comes to organising your own specific timetable.
Our aim will be your comfort!

PS: Just want to let you know about two music events that are happening in this part of the world. For traditional Irish music fans there's the Feile Chois Cuain which is on from May 2nd - 5th in Louisburgh and the Westport Festival of Music & Food, which takes place on the 28th & 29th June. You can find out more on their own websites.
We'll update you regularly about other events taking place in the area.

Guest Access

Guests have their own private bedroom and sitting room with it's own entrance for which they will have a key. There is a lovley garden to ramble, with garden furniture for sitting outside.

Interaction with Guests

We are very happy to have lots of interaction with our guests. We live in the house so are available to answer any questions and to offer plenty of advice about the area, places to visit and eat etc.

The Neighborhood

We live in a lovely rural location with views of the mountains (including Croagh Patrick, Mweelrea and the Sheeffrey Hills) and are just a mile walk from a beautiful sandy beach, suitable for swimming, surfing and other water sports. We are on the route of the Wild Atlantic Way and are just 10km's from Silver Strand, a most beautiful beach with a lovely headland walk to enjoy.

Getting around

Because of our remoteness, public transport is limited. There is a daily bus from Westport to Louisburgh and a train service from Dublin to Westport. Travel from Knock airport is by private car or bus.

Check In
  • Stop searching and book this place! I could not imagine a better Irish experience and I owe so much to Venture Killeen! Alex & his family made me feel right at home from the moment I arrived. It's comfy & cozy, has everything you could need or want, is a beautiful walk to the beach with horses, sheep & cows all around. From this home base I easily went to the Aran Islands, hiked the Reek, explored Westport & Galway, experienced the Cliffs of Moher & so much more! Breakfast was always more than I could even eat (best scrambled eggs ever!) and a glass of wine with the whole family one night was an absolute pleasure! I meant it when I told these folks that one day I hope to be their neighbor, that's how much I loved it!

  • Alex and Therese, and their home, were wonderful. I very much enjoyed the silence of their rural community, the luxury of a private sitting room and entrance to the bedroom suite, and a wonderful feast for breakfast on both days I stayed. They graciously accommodated my dairy and wheat diet restrictions. All in all, if you want to be in the countryside, this is a wonderful place to stay.

  • Amazing place to stay in one of Ireland's most magical spots. Beautiful modern, yet rustic, cottage and fantastic breakfasts supplied by the hosts. Can't forget the free baked goods too!

    Will hopefully return soon.

  • Tactfulness, sense of friendship, attention to every small thing that makes a stay comfortable and easy are what you will find in Venture Killeen. And County Mayo is the place to see in Ireland.

  • We stayed at Alex and Theresa's place for two days and found it very comfortable, modern, although it was originally an old cottage but still retained it's charm , quiet and private . Alex and Theresa serve an excellent breakfast and were extremely friendly and helpful. Perfect stay, all you ask for in an idyllic part of the country. Recommend.

  • This is a great place to use as a base for exploring surrounding areas. A very comfortable bed, and so nice to have your own living room. Breakfast was superb, after weeks of "Irish Breakfasts" it was great to have fresh fruit, yogurt, home made scones, real french pressed coffee, and my favorite, thin, light pancakes (or your choice of eggs fresh from the hens).

Alex and his wife were great hosts, and made my time with them as pleasant as possible. And like many, I wanted to take their Jack Russell Scamper home with me. Thanks!

  • After spending 2 days each, in two separate 4 Star Hotels we wished we skipped the hotels and came straight to Alex & Terese's BnB at Killeen, it was brilliant. Think of a list of superlatives and finish the list with, excellent, lovely, & welcoming. They were hosts from heaven, friendly, helpful and genuine. The house is located in an amazing scenic location. We will be back. Brendan & Teresa.

  • Alex and Terese were fantastic hosts! Right from the beginning of our stay they were warm and inviting and made us feel right at home. Their little bnb/cottage is perfect for a relaxing getaway located in a very beautiful area of Mayo. The cottage itself is well equipped and is very cosy and clean. We can't thank Alex and Terese enough for all they did for us! Lovely people and a lovely home! Do yourself a favour and make the trip to Venture Killeen!

  • Alex & Teresa are great hosts, their children & Jack Russell are a joy,
they did everything they could to ensure my stay was wonderful & it was so wonderful that I went back & stayed a couple more days before leaving Ireland.
The cottage is beautiful, the breakfasts were delicious & the home made treats on arrival a lovely welcome touch. The bed was amazingly comfortable (rated on experiencing 10 weeks worth of beds)
The location is handy to explore some of the hidden treasures Ireland has & Croagh Patrick (the Reek) is not far... but remember to take a stick, it's very steep!!!
Thank you all for a grand stay.

  • Our stay with fellow Airbnb hosts was the best. We really enjoyed our stay and the place is really fabulous. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to go to and you couldn't get a nicer family to be your host. Everything is of the highest standard and is very tastefully decorated. The breakfast was divine.

Hi, I'm Alex, And together with my wife, Therese, run our boutique style B&B, Venture Killeen. We visited this area in 2001 and marvelled at it's beauty and relaxed atmosphere to such an extent that we never actually went home! We have two young children ( 10 & 11yrs ), a very friendly Jack Russell and four laying hens. Also a garden of about an acre into which we try to encourage as much wildlife as possible. We will look forward to welcoming you into our home and introduce you to many, many more delights that surround us here at Venture Killeen. Alex.
