This setting is for the ADVENTUROUS TRAVELER! In June, July and August we have a THREE NIGHT minimum.
The Cottages at Country Flat Farm are a unique getaway in the Big Sur Coastal Mountains between Carmel and Big Sur, California. These charming cottages each have a queen bed, full kitchen, gas fireplace, queen futon couch, decks and clawfoot bathtub with gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding Santa Lucia Mountains. They were esthetically designed and built with recycled, local materials in a very eco friendly manner. We have recently installed BEAUTIFUL NEW BAMBOO FLOORS that add charm and comfort to your stay! We are off the grid, solar powered, with a spring fed stream for water, provide internet access.....a luxurious, country retreat overlooking a working organic farm. Peace, serenity and regeneration are the themes of your stay.
Lemons, honey, fruit trees, veggies in season await the visitor. All you need to bring is your food and drink. Great hiking nearby, Monterey Peninsula (north) and Big Sur village (south) each 30 minutes driving time feature great restaurants and activities. THIS IS A NO SMOKING PROPERTY!
We are 2.5 miles from Highway 1, then 1 mile on a good, yet bumpy in some places, steep in others dirt road off the paved Palo Colorado Road. We meet all guests upon arrival on the paved road, show you how to drive it, and guide you to the farm. Driving directions are sent upon final payment. We STRONGLY recommend an all wheel drive vehicle because 2 wheel drives chew up the road and annoy neighbors. In winter (November through March) we are now REQUIRING ALL WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES. If you are uncomfortable with or unfamiliar with driving off paved surfaces, please consider this before booking. Also, no arrivals AFTER 9 PM. It disturbs the neighbors.

  • Janie and Peter were fantastic hosts. The property is gorgeous, it's lined with redwoods and lemon trees! They will bring you fresh eggs from their chickens along with their amazing honey. The views from the cabin are spectacular. We couldn't have asked for a better stay. Highly recommended if you're in the Carmel/Big Sur area!

  • Peter and Janie were such sweethearts! I was able to live my dream cabin being surrounded by the beautiful red wood forest. They had everything we needed included eggs and honey. I would stay here again!

  • Jamie was great when I had questions about the property, and when we arrived, it was everything we wanted--a quiet getaway from our busy lives. The drive up is not for the faint of heart, but we did just fine in our 4 wheel drive Jeep Liberty. It's a great spot for exploring the Big Sur area and taking some time to be together and decompress.

  • Beautiful "Bird's Nest" at the top of the mountain! Our hosts fully prepared us for the "off road" experience we would have finding this charming Big Sur get-a-way. While only a few miles off the main coastal Highway 1, through the Redwood Giants and at the top of the mountain, you feel like you are faraway from civilization. Peter met us at the main road and their private road to escort us to the top of the mountain, upon arrival. It was a good thing, as the road is only carved out for one car at a time and Peter advised us to "keep moving" up the road. After switchback, upon switchback, curving up the mountain we arrived at yet another private, gated entrance to their property's driveway. This was now the boundary of our adventures. My boyfriend really wanted to hike and venture past their property and we were "asked" not to go past the private gate. If you are an experienced hiker, expecting to venture down to the ocean, then you would have to go against the hosts request. If you just want a view and charming cabin, this is a magical spot. The cabin was spotless and just the perfect size for two, with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean and the expansive hillside down to the sea. The property is beautiful with every possible feature of a vineyard, walking trails and an adorable chicken "Coupe de Ville". Fresh eggs, coffee and honey from the estate were waiting for us in the cabin. The refinished claw foot tub was a great treat to enjoy a soak after a day of hiking. The stars were amazing at night, as you are above the coastal fog and lights from below. Everything except the hiking limitations, made this a perfect retreat from the busy Carmel village scene or the big city of San Francisco. It is magical.

  • We had an unbelievable time staying in one of the cabins at Country Flat Farm. The setting is unbeatable – clear days offer ocean views from the cabins, hiking trails are plentiful both on the premises and a short drive from Big Sur. All necessary amenities including dishes, dish soap, a full kitchen, eggs and honey from the farm, towels, bedding, and even board games (among others) were provided. After a long day of hiking in Big Sur, we were giddy to return back to the cabin, cook a meal and play Scrabble while watching the sun fade into the ocean from our cabin. Janie could not have been nicer or more helpful, and everything was very easy for us to figure out once we were settled. The property is off the beaten path which is exactly what we were looking for (quiet, rustic, relaxing!) but at the same time there are modern luxuries in case you need to indulge (i.e. excellent wifi). We highly recommend the cabins at Country Flat Farm and plan on returning.

  • We had a totally lovely time at Janie and Peter's beautiful farm. The little house is cozy, clean, and sweet, and they were gracious hosts.

  • My friends and I had a wonderful stay at Janie's cabin. It's a beautiful, peaceful little spot perched above the farm with views you can stare at all day. The cabin itself was very tidy, well designed, and contained everything we needed for cooking meals and relaxing with a glass of wine. The only drawback was the long drive up a winding steep dirt road up to the cabin. When we went out to explore Carmel and Big Sur we knew that we had to plan on being out and about all day because once we made that drive back up the hill we were not likely to want to venture out again. However, that is also what makes the place so private and charming, so don't let it deter you. Overall it was a great experience and highly recommended.

  • Lovely place, great to pick our own lemons and saw deer every morning. Hosts were great. Would recommend to anyone wanting to use as it is intended, a retreat. Not so convenient if you are a nervous driver and want to be out on the big sur every day, for which Janie has given a very honest and accurate description of the place. Very beautiful setting and very relaxing.

  • We had an amazing stay at the cabin. The cabin itself is very cozy and Janie provided many amenities to make our stay comfortable. My husband and I ventured out during the day and would come back and make dinner and eat by the fire and enjoy the breathtaking view. The ride up to the cabin is a bit challenging but we did it in the spring with a 2-wheel-drive car just fine. I would recommend renting a 4-wheel-drive car for peace of mind. If it wasn't for my husband growing up near mountains and knowing how to drive up/down steep hills, I'm not sure I could have done it on my own. If you ask him, he thought it was fun to drive it.

All and all, I would definitely recommend staying here. And, if we do come back to the area, we would stay hear again in a heart beat.

  • We loved the cottage so much that we will be back!! It was a great experience to be off the beaten track and practically living in the trees. The sunsets and view of the ocean from our high perch - just wonderful.
Thank you Janie and Peter for creating this peaceful retreat and for making it available to those in need for quiet time.

We are the Eichorn family and have been living here since 1984. Back when our journey began, we were searching for a piece of land where we could build a sustainable home, raise our children in a healthy, pristine environment and have a small family farm. The land was pretty much raw and untouched by human hands except for some logging activity early in the 20th century. Upon visiting Country Flat for the first time, Peter Eichorn, the dad and farmer, crawled through the dense native vegetation so he could touch and examine the soil to determine if it were suitable to sustain our dreams. It more than met his expectations and the rest is history! We built a rammed earth home and have been living “off the grid” on solar power all these years. We and the land are blessed and sustained by a sweet-water stream. Over the years we have provided organic vegetables for the local Palo Colorado Canyon community where we are located as well as having had a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) serving 30 families for several years on the Monterey Peninsula. Currently, we primarily focus on our beekeeping endeavors and our Meyer lemon and watercress crops. We are delighted now to be able to share our vision and bounty with others through our captivating Cottages at Country Flat Farm!
