Gleann Leithin Cottage is a cosy converted byre situated in a very tranquil scenic area.
The view from the cottage looks towards the beautiful Glendowan mountains and Glenveagh National Park.
Ideal for a peaceful retreat or a great base to explore
The cottage consists of an open plan living, dining and kitchenette area with a double sleeping mezzanine above.
There is a small bathroom with an electric shower.
The kitchenette contains an electric hob, microwave oven and small fridge.
Guests have access to a washing machine in an adjacent outbuilding.
The space is heated by a wood-burning stove with fuel provided.
The guest cottage has a private garden, seating area and barbeque to the rear.
As the byre was originally part of a small farm, our own traditional cottage sits on the same site.
Glenleighan Cottage shares the site with our own house but guests have use of their own private garden at the rear.
There is access to a washing machine and dryer in an adjacent outhouse.
If guests wish they are free to borrow our bikes.
Interaction with Guests
On arrival we will welcome you ourselves.
On the rare occasion that we will not be available to greet you, we will arrange for someone else to be there.
As we live close by, we will be on hand to help with any queries you may have but we aim to ensure that you have privacy while staying with us.
We will be happy to help with arranging tours and providing information on the many varied local activities.
We are centrally located in a beautiful part of Donegal, close to most of its attractions.
The cottage is nestled in a valley 3km from the scenic village of Fintown.
The river Finn is known widely for its salmon and trout fishing and permits are available locally for fly-fishing.
In Fintown village, you will find the only operational narrow gauge railway in Donegal. It runs for
5 km beside Lough Finn, which is overlooked by Aghla and Scraig mountains.
The local village has a shop, pubs, church, school, health centre and library.
The towns of Glenties, Dungloe, Ballybofey and Letterkenny are 15 minutes, 15 minutes, 25 minutes and 30 minutes drives respectively. There you will find restaurants, pubs and supermarkets.
There are many stunning beaches within a 30 minute drive, offering beautiful walks and a choice of sports such as kayaking, surfing, golf and horse-riding, all of which we can help you to organise.
If you choose to explore the county, by car is the easiest way to do so.
However the following bus companies operate services to and within Donegal
John McGinley Coaches
If you arrive in Letterkenny by bus, McGeehan Coaches operate a service to Fintown village and we can pick you up from there.
Alternatively Doherty Coaches run a bus in the afternoon from Letterkenny which passes by the end of our short lane. This leaves a 3 minute walk to our cottage.
Donegal airport (40 minutes) is served by Flybe with flights to and from Dublin and Prestwick.
We are 70 minutes drive from Derry airport also.
Other Things to Note
While a car is a great way to see the county, if you visit without one and enjoy hiking or cycling, there is much exploring that you can do from our doorstep. We can provide bikes and maps of the locality to get you started.
We live in a Gaeltacht area rich in traditional Irish culture such as language, music and the arts. There is a wide choice of traditional music available in local pubs
Donegal also has a wealth of festivals throughout the year such as the Errigal Arts Festival, attracting many renowned Irish and International artists to the area.
If you would like to bring an element of pampering into your holiday we have a trained Neuromuscular Therapist who can pay a house call to the cottage and provide treatment for a specific injury or a general massage.
We can also recommend a visit to The Maghery Bay Salon to enjoy a seaweed bath overlooking the
beautiful Maghery beach. This is less than a 30 minute drive from us.
Taking a 15 minute drive from our house will connect you with The Wild Atlantic Way coastal drive.
As we used to live in the cottage ourselves and it is essentially like an extension of our home, we ask that you please respect the building and contents and leave it as you found it.
If you would like to smoke we ask that you please do so outside and use ashtrays provided.
We recycle as much of our waste as we can and ask that you please follow our simple recycling system which we will explain to you on arrival.
This is such a special place; we loved staying here and are already planning to come back again - 2 nights just wasn't enough. The location is fantastic and the cottage itself is charming, comfortable and really quite unique. It's possibly the most relaxing place we've ever stayed in. Anna and Pete are great hosts and left us some breakfast essentials; they also provided cooking ingredients - oils, spices etc - as well as an amply equipped kitchen. The bed is very comfortable, the wood-burning stove is just great to flake out in front of in the evenings, and there are books to read and CDs to listen to. We would thoroughly recommend staying here.
Anna's little cottage is just magnificent. The directions were fantastic and after finding it with ease, we were welcomed with smiles, a lovely chat, and the wood burner full and ready to be lit. As soon as you walk in the door to this place you feel at home, it has a lovely essence about it and you can tell that it was built with love. The couch was very comfy and we were provided with extra blankets for snuggling up in front of the fire. The kitchen was well-stocked with all of the pots, pans and herbs you'd need to make a nice meal. There were some fantastic books (which made getting out and about quite hard for me!) and of course the bed was incredibly comfy. The skylight with views of the stars overhead was the icing on the cake, and we were blessed with clear skies so the view from bed was just exquisite! Within an hour's drive from all the best spots in South/West Donegal, I can't recommend this place enough as a base for exploring all the sights, the beautiful countryisde and lots of coastal towns. A perfect spot for a holiday or just a weekend getaway from the city, you will feel right at home in this cottage.
Anna was a brilliant host who was very welcoming and friendly. The cottage was lovely and had everything we needed. we would have loved to stay longer.
Anna and Pete were fantastic hosts. They made us feel very welcome and gave us full privacy and great advice.
The cottage was exceptional. The wood burning fire was heavenly, we could have quite easily stayed by the fire all week end, it was so cosy and warm. The cottage is so well designed and decorated so tastefully, we loved all the little personal touches.
The skylight was a wonderful bonus, loved staring out at the stars and weather changing all the time, as well as the gorgeous tall windows showing the magnificent trees and forests outside.
We highly recommend anyone to visit this beautiful peaceful place and will definitely be back.
Four great days in donegal and in Anne & Pete's wonderful cottage!
Our first impressions were:
1. Very nice place far away from all the every day trouble: beautiful irish/donegal rough landscape, quite, pitoresque, freedom…,
2. What a gorgious and authentic cottage: looks absolutly like the pictures but bigger as expected ;).
All is super clean, the bed under the roof is comfortable and cuddly, the evenings in front of the old oven are so cosy and in the kitchen you will find everything you need. The bathroom is also clean and functional. We also found some fresh froots, milk and butter as we arrive. There are helpfull maps, an electric adapter and some nice music-cd's :). In general Anna & Pete put a lot of love in the restauration and decor of this beautiful authentic stonehouse. It is also a good place to start trips arround donegal (we went for example to the sleave leagues, to northireland and the giants causeway and the Glenveagh National Park). Really beautiful days!
We enjoyed our stay very much and would love to come back. Thank you very much to Anna & Pete for your kind hospitality, helpful recommendations and the delicious irish purple :).
It was a really great stay at the cottage of anna and pete. Unfortunately anna was not there, but pete has welcome us very friendly and gave us advises what to see in donegal. The cottage was really cosy, especially cause of the stove and the mezzanine sleeping area. We can just recommend to stay at annas and petes cottage!
We had a wonderful weekend at this beautiful cottage, sitting by the stove and listening to the rain outside! It's a perfect place to relax and get away from the city. Next time hopefully the weather will be better so we can go for a longer walk as there were lots of options nearby. Thanks to our hosts for being so welcoming. The cottage was exactly as described, with everything you need to cook a dinner or breakfast. Hopefully we'll be back again soon!
I have a background in textile design.
Moved to Donegal nearly ten years ago and converted our traditional
stone cottage and byre with my husband Pete where we now happily live
with our two young children.
We look forward to welcoming you to the most beautiful unspoilt part of Ireland!
