Holly's cabin on Long Island was a great find. We couldn't have been happier with this off-the-grid style cabin. It had everything that we needed and was very comfortable. At the beginning of our trip, Holly met us at the mainland shore and helped us get into a canoe (which she provided), gave us some pointers on how to canoe (we had only rowed a couple of times prior to this), and we were off on our adventure. The following day we went kayaking straight from the cabin with nice kayaks which Holly provides. She gave us some pointers on good destinations and she was spot on as far as the best places to go to see harbor seals. Earlier in the season it looks like it would have been pretty fun to stop at Holbrooks general store for ice cream and lunch. Being October already though, much of the area was already closed for the season. Anyway, my husband and I are hooked on sea kayaking after this trip and we can't wait for more trips like this next summer.
I had a wonderful time! The cabin was beautiful and private in a secluded forest area at the end of the island. The host was welcoming and helpful. having a canoe we were able to paddle around the island and explore the water and wild life. A beautiful part of the world .
Our stay at Holly's camp was exactly as expected. Relaxing, quiet, a beautiful setting and a cozy atmosphere. We went into it with the mindset of "camping" in a cabin and that's exactly what we experienced. Amenities are basic, but that's the point, right?!
We stayed 2 nights and Holly was accommodating, allowing us to check in early and leave a little later on the last day. She also helped us out by tying the kayak to the canoe to help us get our belongings over in one trip. We brought our lab, and it was his first experience in a canoe, so it was great to have the extra boat to pull all our stuff out. The canoeing out and back was easier than expected, unless you get high winds and current which we had on the first day - made it a little more challenging!
We found wonderful trails to walk along - both on the water and in the center of the island - so much interesting and colorful moss. We brought a camping hammock which we put to good use, reading, napping, etc. And the BLUEBERRIES! We spent quite a bit of time picking wild blueberries. They made for the most amazing topping on oatmeal in the morning. Missing those already!
The only downfalls were not being able to make a campfire outside, but we did use the wood stove inside which made it cozy at nighttime. Additionally, there isn't a great place to lounge inside besides the bed - just chairs and a table. A couch or loveseat would be a nice addition, but understandably difficult to get one out to the island I'm sure! But overall, the worst part was having to leave at the end of our stay!
Thank you, Holly, for a great weekend - we hope to be back!
Staying at Holly's cabin on Long Island for 3 nights was probably the most peaceful and restful vacation I have taken in the past few years. Her description of the property was spot on. She is easy to communicate with by text and phone. I would recommend this place as a great outdoorsy getaway.
We had a great stay at this Ocean Island house. Perfect getaway for my family. We enjoyed the simplicity of the place, as well as the location. We kayaked with seals, watched the lobster boats go by, read on the dock, played games and cooked in the cozy (and well kept) house, and were generally able to slow our pace down and spend quality time together. Our hosts were great. Met us at the dock with muffins (excellent!) and made sure we were all set to paddle to the island. I would recommend this rental to anyone looking to spend some quiet time enjoying the Maine coast while keeping it simple.
We just returned from a wonderfully peaceful two-night stay on Holly's island camp in Harpswell, Maine and we are already planning our next stay there! Holly and her husband were great hosts, providing delicious muffins and other necessities for our stay (i.e. ice for the 5 day cooler, drinking water etc.), as well as clear directions on how to get to the camp and coordinate ourselves on the island. We arrived with prior experience staying in a similar camp on a nearby island, but we found Holly's place to be an incredible respite from the busy lives we lead. This is a place meant for clearing your mind, enjoying time alone or with loved ones, gentle hiking, relaxing for hours by the water, kayaking and returning to a simple way of life (one without stores, crowds, technology etc.) We look forward to many more stays!
