I'll give you some details about each of the rooms and rates below. Our wish is that you will feel like you are staying with friends here in Hawaii rather than being cubed up in a hotel somewhere. We take the time with all of our guests to find out their interests and help them to build as tight or loose an itinerary as they wish -- emphasizing ocean, geological, archeological, nature, scientific, cultural, and/or social activities. As you will find, there is much to do on the Big Island, or, what we call, the "real Hawaii.". A large portion of our guests are return "customers" who come back to the Edge year after year. Many people use the Edge of the World as a base from which to explore the rest of the Big Island. Others use it as a place to watch papaya grow, and that's fine too. For Kana, my Japanese wife, and me, it is a genuine pleasure to meet folks from around the U.S. and from around the world.

The Crow's Nest is on the second floor of the house and has a spectacular view of Kealakekua Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It has a private lanai, individual satellite TV, DVD, phone, private bath, refrigerator, wall to wall carpet, and king size bed. It is our most popular room and a favorite of honeymooners, artists and poets. It is $129 plus state tax (13.4 percent payable to innkeeper on arrival) per night. This room may have the best view in Hawaii!

The Pacific Room, on the main floor of the house, is a spacious bedroom with a huge private bathroom, king size bed, individual satellite TV, VCR and DVD, wall to wall carpet, refrigerator, phone and opens on the long lanai which wraps around the back of the house looking out to the ocean. There is a semi-private area on the lanai for guests staying in the Pacific room. There is also a nice ocean view from the bedroom. This room is $119 plus tax per night.

The Nut Room is slightly smaller than the other two rooms but still quite large, new wall to wall carpet, has one double bed and one twin bed, no TV or phone (however guests are welcome to use the ones in the living room). The private bathroom is two steps down the hallway. It overlooks the orchard and has a wonderful skylight, and is $89 plus tax per night. We have a table with a great ocean view set up on the lanai for guests who stay in the Nut Room.

When there are more than two guests per room, there is an additional charge of $15 per person per night. In those cases we put out Japanese style futons. The maximum capacity for each room is four. Also, I do not charge extra for one night stays.

Prices include a hearty, tropical breakfast. We are also a member of the Hawaii Island Bed and Breakfast Association, and the Edge of the World has recently won the "Traveler's Choice Award" (B&B Registry), so guests can be assured of the highest standards. You'll also find A Beautiful Edge of the World recommended in the the Hawaii edition of the Lonely Planet.

We are located on a five acre working farm, surrounded by macadamia nut, coffee, papaya, avocado, and mango trees. If you're a coffee drinker, you'll be served my own 100% pure, organic Kona coffee every morning.(Don't mean to brag about our coffee, but many folks have told us it's the best they've ever tasted. We wholesale to our guests, any quantity.) If you would like to try my own noni tea, just let me know. We also grow organic bananas, pineapple, guava, papaya, sour sop, Surinam cherries, atamoya, cheromoya, oranges, limes, sapodilla, and passion fruit, some of which you will be served with breakfast, depending on the fruits in season. There are also abundant beautiful flowers scattered here and there.

Perhaps the best snorkeling in Hawaii is a mere ten minute drive from the Edge. Also, archeological sites, farmer's markets, and near by fine and inexpensive restaurants.

Guests who stay for three days or more may use the microwave and refrigerator. We also offer free laundry service for guests who stay three days or more. We have complimentary hair dryers, beach towels and mats, limited snorkel equipment, and ice chests for our guests.. Guests are welcome to use my computer for a quick check of their e-mail. We now have free WIFI throughout the house.

Rural Hawaii at its finest. The Edge is sometimes used for group retreats, large family gatherings, wedding parties, etc. Please let me know if you'd like me to reserve one of our three rooms.

  • We really enjoyed our stay with Kurt and his family at the Edge of the World. The room is basic, but you get great food and homegrown coffee for breakfast, great views and a very nice host whose eager to share all of his knowledge about the island. Even the drive down to the house is cool!

    Response from Kurt:

Many thanks for your kind review, Marius. Best wishes from the Edge.

  • Kurt´s family were amazing hosts during the two days we spent in the Captain Cook´s area. Their place is very well located and it is as peaceful as we need when we are on hollydays. I can only recommend you to stay there, we wish we had more nights at their place !

  • Kurt and his family (and kitties!) are great, and we felt warmly welcomed into their home. The view from the Crow's Nest is amazing. Highly recommended.

  • Kurt and his lovely family - including his very determined six year old daughter "General" Jenna, who I expect to see on Broadway - are not just talking the talk about living a green fresh and generous life, but also opening their home to share it.
And, like all good stories, its a little insane to get there, but the journey is worth it for the views alone - dont mind the coffee, even by Kona standards special. And when I drove my "Shame of Detroit" Mercury rental off a nearby cliff, front wheels spinning in air, it was not AAA but Kurt who came out and hurled us back to safety.
This has been one extraordinary and life-enhancing experience.
