Our Casita Luna experience was absolutely wonderful. Upon arrival, we were greeted at the door by our hosts and introduced to the ins and outs of the home environment with plenty of clarity. Rick and Barb even walked us to a local restaurant the first night just to make sure we found it.
The casita was clean, beautifully decorated, and user-friendly. The courtyard fountain and chirping birds made for an authentic Mexican experience in our safe haven. Traveling with my 12 year old daughter in Mexico for the first time, it was nice to have this beautiful home at the end of each day. Barb and Rick were available to answer my questions as needed and were always gracious.
We highly recommend this rental.
From the moment I arrived, Rick and Barb were the most welcoming and gracious of hosts. My month long stay at Castia Luna could not have been more perfect. Their property is breathtakingly beautiful and Casita Luna is beyond comfortable and cozy. From the entryway, you step into the living room, which is beautifully (and functionally!) decorated with cultural art pieces, a comfortable couch, flat screen TV, gas fireplace, and a fully functional kitchen (where I cooked daily). The bedroom boasts an entire wall of built-in closet and cabinet space, as well as a very comfortable bed with side tables. The bathroom is adorned with vibrantly colored, hand-painted tiles. From the living room, double iron doors open out onto a private patio overlooking their expansive garden property, as well as a large fountain frequented by the resident birds for their daily baths. It was wonderful to sit on the patio and enjoy a meal, read, or relax after a day out on the town looking out at the picturesque garden filled with vibrancy and life.
Casita Luna also offers the convenience of location. It is walking distance to restaurants, grocery stores, Parque Juarez, and Instituto Allende (where there is a fantastic Saturday organic market). I also thoroughly enjoyed the 15-minute walk to the Centro where my language school was. I easily made this walk multiple times a day. However, if I needed to, hailing a taxi was as easy as walking a block and waiting no more than a minute or two for a taxi to stop. There is also a bus stop a block from Casita Luna as well. Having all these options for getting around was extremely convenient.
Being that I was traveling alone, it gave me immense peace of mind having Rick and Barb right across the way on the property. They were always open to answering any questions or offering advice or suggestions. Their little dog Luna was equally as welcoming and friendly! They are an extremely down-to-earth couple and genuinely seem to enjoy sharing their hospitality and their home to travelers of SMA, which I couldn't be more grateful for. The comfort of Casita Luna and the warmth and hospitality of Rick and Barb yielded a summer vacation beyond my expectations. I look forward to returning to SMA and Casita Luna in the future!
Rick and Barbara are delightful hosts. We were slightly late arriving but they were very welcoming. The casita is a romantic getaway in the centre of SM, exactly as the pictures and exactly what we were looking for. We were pleased with the location as we could walk everywhere. The small kitchen has everything you need to make your stay as cheap as possible although eating out can be a cheap affair. The casita is separated from the main house making it even more appealing as a stand alone secret place amidst the most amazing garden. The small patio is secluded too and perfect for eating breakfast and evening chats. A must stay in SM.
The success and joy of our 27 day stay was in large part due to the hospitality shown by Rick and Barb and by the lovely Casa Luna, our home away from home. This allowed us to concentrate on the history, charm, and quaintness of SMA knowing we could return to our casita at the end of the day without worrying about what might be awaiting us.
Even tho we arrived late, Rick, Barb, and Luna, who became our 4-legged friend, were waiting for us. They welcomed us and showed us the ins and outs before saying good night. On the coffee table we found the FYI folder which answered all of our questions before we even thought of them.
The casita was exactly as expected: large bedroom with a comfortable king-size bed, tiled bath with large shower, living room/kitchen combination that was very accommodating. The beautifully tiled kitchen has a 4-burner stove and full size refrigerator; the fireplace in the living room came in handy to take the chill off a couple of cool nights. Large glass doors swing out onto the private patio from which we could enjoy the sounds of the large fountain that was just a few feet away and the birds that came to drink and bathe. Beyond is the most amazing garden, very expansive with 5 "ancient" mesquite trees and beautifully landscaped flower beds. The patio and yard appeared to be an extension of our casita space. Rick and Barb encouraged us to treat their gardens as our own.
Their living on the property is a big plus. We always knew Rick and Barb were accessible, but they never appeared intrusive. They were warm and sincere in wanting to make our stay as enjoyable and memorable as possible, and they seemed genuinely interested in us. Having lived in SMA for a number of years and immersing themselves in the history and culture of the area, they were a great source of information on the customs and holidays, and their suggestions were welcomed.
The casa is located in one of the many colonias that make up SMA, a quiet neighborhood that provided us with unexpected pleasures: a wonderful produce market nearby, restaurants, a laundromat where we dropped off our laundry, and several options for grocery shopping from Mega (a super mega store) to neighborhood grocery stores. The casa is just a short walk from the organic market that is held every Saturday.
We opted to walk to the historic section of SMA (all of SMA is historic), the area surrounding the Jardin, but we could have taken a bus for 5 pesos (about 33 cents). The bus stop is on the main street which is a 1 1/2 block walk away. Taxis run up and down that street all day and cost 35 pesos (less than $2) to almost anywhere in town.
The location? Perfect.
Casa Luna surpassed our expectations.
Thank you, Rick and Barb and Luna, too.
I spent two and a half months at Casita Luna. It combines elegance, a beautiful and restful natural setting, and Rick and Barbara’s unsurpassable service-oriented hospitality.
THE PROPERTY -- The casita is set in a breathtaking and impeccably maintained garden of mesquite and palm trees, flowering perennials, ferns and many other indigenous plants. The sounds of nature abound: birds and more birds, and the relaxing sound of a trickling fountain. As elsewhere in San Miguel, street and neighbourhood sounds can be heard, but they are passing.
THE CASITA -- A tastefully appointed, cozy open concept living area and kitchen; a large bedroom with a quality bed; a well equipped kitchen; A log gaz fireplace warms up the living space in minutes; the Casita is very private given a strategically placed hedge between it and the hosts’ house.
THE HOSTS -- Rick and Barb are very attentive hosts: Requests were always met within a short time. I was sick when I arrived and Barb gave me medication, soups, and other kind attentions. Rick installed satellite TV (a real bonus), and was always quick to attend to any issues. As seasoned travellers, they were a pleasure to converse with on matters Mexican and other.
We had a wonderful time at Casita Luna. Rick and Barb were lovely hosts - very attentive and responsive whenever we needed anything.
The location was great -- we were able to walk to the Jardin in 15 minutes and we discovered several fantastic places along the way.
We will definitely be going back to San Miguel and Casita Luna.
Casita Luna was perfect for me and my daughter. The cozy and pristine house shares a manicured large garden with the owners home. The kitchen is fully loaded with everything you need to cook. The bathroom is beautifully done with traditional hand painted ceramic tiles. The bed was vey comfortable which is important especially after a long day traveling or exploring the town. The location is not walking distance to downtown but you can catch a quick cab ride wherever you need to go. The host/owners were very nice and available whenever I needed something. I will definitely be willing to stay there again. It's much better than high priced hotels.
