Awesome for swimming, boating, fishing, exploring &relaxing. Private 5 acres with 1000 ft of shoreline on a 500 acre island in a nature preserve . Your dock is a one minute walk to the house. A one-of-a-kind spot for adventuresome, intrepid travelers. See photos, read reviews. Amazing sunsets and sunrises and crystal clear water.

The space
MASTER BEDROOM: One queen bed with trundle underneath. Close to the bathroom. A window and door giving access to the back deck and view of the forest. This room has the giant California State flag in it.
SECOND BEDROOM: One queen bed with single bunk above and also, trundle underneath. And crib. Two windows and a door giving access to the back deck. This room has the antique map of New York State in it. We also have a crib in here.
BATHROOM: Shower, sink and toilet. Our bathroom is rather small as cottages on islands all have to be totally drained in the winter months.
LIVING AREA: There are two couches, two Hermann Miller chairs facing the view. There is a little reading nook, and place to hang coats. There is a 16' painting of Sutter's Mill by George Mathis hanging in the living area, as well as 4 antique chandeliers suspended from the ceiling.
KITCHEN: There are 3 stools at a stainless steel counter which is a kitchen island with stove in the center. There is a Navajo design mosaic set in the floor. Open design cooking area with shelves above sink, The kitchen is fully equipped.
SUNPORCH: This space is under the same roof as the house but one must go outside and then back in to get there. It has a queen Murphy bed in it. It's fully screened and great in the evenings. No bugs! It has a large oak dining room table with plenty of chairs. Great for dinner. Also good for reading, napping, or separate space for children or work space.
Our house is built on a huge granite slab made millions of years ago by the receding glacier. The River is in front and the nature preserve is behind. There is lots of outdoor seating in front of the house on part of this rock, and also on the back rock.
Our place is not for the faint of heart, or the person looking for all the creature comforts of home. It is for those looking to explore, observe mother nature and all she has to offer. However ,it is very comfortable and well outfitted.
Of all the places listed, hardly any are actually ON an island which, in itself, makes the experience unique.
We have paddle board, kayak, canoe, rowing shell, etc. that you can borrow.
Although our house looks close, it is not. You are very private with you own swimming area, surroundings and dock.

Where you’ll be

Chippewa Bay, New York, United States

Our island sits in the St. Lawrence River and is one of the 1,000 Islands. The St. Lawrence is the boundary between the U.S. and Canada and the St. L. Seaway is in front with freighters plying the waters coming from all over the world on their way to the ports along the Great Lakes.
You are coming to Oak Island in Chippewa Bay. We have 5 acres at the upriver tip. You can see our house in the aerial view. We are close, but not too close. You will have your own dock at the back (also in aerial view photo) and own swimming place. Your house is very secluded and private. This is the perfect place for the adventuresome traveler looking to get away from it all and relax.. Oak Island is a 450 acre island almost all of which is in a nature preserve. And you are in the heart of Chippewa Bay. We are about a 10 minute boat ride from Alexandria Bay, and about 20 min.car ride from Clayton. You can see Boldt Castle in A Bay, take a boat tour of the 1,000 Islands, do your shopping, have lunch, etc. In Clayton they have the Opera House, the Antique Boat Museum, many fine shops and restaurants. They also have a tour boat.
There is a boat tour to Singer Castle on Dark Island right from Schermerhorns.
There is also a Scuba diving boat that goes out from Schermerhorns
