In the last few years we have hosted people from several countries making for some fascinating stories being shared around the kitchen table! A stay at the Morningstar House is a great way to make new friends and get settled and connected if you are planning a move to Nashville. Since my practice here is more like sharing my home, and less like a motel rental, I especially appreciate people who bring an open, cooperative, friendly spirit to the process.
In a quiet wooded area near Percy Priest lake, we are still just 5 miles east of the Nashville Airport, (pickup available $10) , 15 minutes from downtown, and the Opryland Hotel area. I have an art room, activities for children, (my grandchildren live nearby) a Playroom where we've held house concerts, and many workshops, wireless internet, a wide selection of music. My space is ideal for artists, writers, or musicians, business people, travelers, people new to the city, or anyone wanting a getaway or just an easy place to stay for a month or more.
While my house is clean, it is not spotless-- the forks aren't a matching set, the refrigerator and cabinets are sometimes full of food (always for share!), the bars of soap are not individually wrapped like in a motel, the sheets and towels are clean- hung out in the fresh air to dry, but don't always form a matching set. : ) My grandchildren have made sure the carpet has a few light stains in the carpet that won't come out, and i've collected books and things globally that adorn each room. Yes, i could part with some more of the "stuff" but for now, it's here for us to enjoy along with the relaxed friendly vibe in the house.
I offer creative process coaching in expressive and healing arts. As a community artist for over 25 years I have an extensive network of creative friends doing interesting projects in and around Nashville. I can offer expressive arts/creativity sessions for $20 a session upon request. : )
I've done lots of traveling around the world, and learned the beauty and value of hospitality... I enjoy people and seek to provide guests in my home with support, nourishment for body and soul, information about the city, as well as honor needs for quiet and privacy. Please read my reviews and references, they will help you connect with the "spirit" of the Morningstar House before you get here. : )
The house is very spacious and guests are welcome to share the open space--- outdoor deck in the back, well-stocked kitchen, 12 places, (two tables) for sit down dining, a huge playroom with music and lounging space, front living room, washer/dryer, fenced in back yard and plenty of parking on the quiet cul-de-sac.
Interaction with guests
I am open to interaction with guests and can be available for conversation, support for making the most out of your stay-- some transportation, and expressive arts sessions if that is a desire. I am also available to connect guests with other guests or creative Nashville folk. I can also offer space, peace and quiet to guests who want that... Sometimes "less is more" when it comes to contact... : )
Other things to note
I have several friends and family members nearby who are also opening rooms in there homes to accomodate my guests. PLEASE INQUIRE EVEN IF IT APPEARS I'M booked up for your dates, I can almost always find a place for you!
I'm fairly flexible and open.. I see this service as more like "sharing my home" than "renting a room"... it's a subtle and friendly shift we are making... It's safe, comfortable, spacious, and quiet here...
we can discuss guidelines when you arrive...
just generally enjoy sharing clear communication about needs and expectations... : )

For 25 years I've been serving the world as a community organizer, artist, expressive arts facilitator, and traveler and now I find myself in a very large, beautiful home with plenty of space for welcoming the world here at the Morningstar House. I have a passion for community building across lines of race, class, and culture and have found work on the boards and staff of many church and community non-profit organizations, locally, regionally and internationally.
I am the oldest grandchild in a large farm family in Southern Tennessee and learned the fine art of hospitality from my ancestors, especially warm-hearted grandmothers and great-grandmothers. There was a great synergy and sustainability in the collective, cooperative work of my large family, and in the 15 years I've lived in the "city" I've brought this ethic and value to my life in community here.
After 10 years of leadership in the forms of InterPlay, I am currently practicing with MorningStar Community Arts, linking arts and social transformation, writing, and performing. I've written poetry all along the journey and am currently publishing an extensive audio collection with a title something like: Radical Hospitality: Grief, Grace and Grits.
I love to travel and have been to Morocco several times to stay with extended family there. Hawaii and Australia are favorites, too. I have 3 small grandchildren who live nearby and my space is equipped for children of every age with art supplies, books, music, games, movies, etc.
I love hosting house concerts, circle gatherings, and potlucks in my home and am enjoying taking this longtime practice of hosting friends and family in my home to a new level with airbnb and other networks by hosting strangers that very often become friends. Since mid 2015, we made the shift here at the Morningstar House to host guests for a 30 day minimum stay, so there's more continuity and just 3-4 guests sharing my huge home at any time.
I spent 20 years traveling the world with my cultural work and my favorite way to visit any city is by doing a creative homestay with hosts that were sometimes friends, and sometimes friends of friends. It's such a sweet way to come to know a city by having a safe, friendly, homey landing place. So that's what I want to offer now. The spirit of hospitality comes naturally and easy to me. My family used to say "I never met a stranger" I really enjoy people in all their variety and would be happy to provide you a good balance of quiet and private time, and also friendly, helpful support as you encounter Nashville.
I also like to offer expressive arts facilitation and support to guests interested in that, and possibly even collaborate with guests to create concerts, workshops and other events in the PlayRoom which holds about 55 people for a concert, and 30 for workshops.
