A dream of a place Shyla's got!
As part of the beautifully maintained Gouri Ecofarm in the Nilgiris, the cottage we stayed in is surrounded by pretty flowers and abundant greenery. In the garden, there were swings and a lovely field for the children to play on.
The cottage itself was perfect, comfortable and well-equipped, with hot running water and a nice kitchen. Even the beds were well above the general standard. And the food, which comes at a very reasonable extra charge, was absolutely delicious! Varied, fresh and full of taste.
Shyla was a very helpful host, full of tips for our stay. We saw loads of wild animals (even sloth bears!) in the reserve and took some of the hikes Shyla recommended.
An absolutely fantastic experience and more than good value!
First thing is this place is very far from ooty around 50 Km while airbnb map shows it wrong. Secondly the host is not at all cooperating. Her only number was switched off when we were to go to her place. Due to which we could not reach that. Later she switched on her phone and told that you were to call my son in law and it was your responsibility to take another number. Finally we had to take a hotel in ooty.
I visited on a short road trip from Mysore on my Royal Enfield motorbike. My stay a the cottage was as I expected. The cottage itself was clean, comfortable and spacious. The staff were attentive, responsive and provided a great service. The location on the farm where I could, if I chose, also mix with other guests was a great escape. The town itself is the usual bustling place and I had a great Thali at the coffee shop! I did like the whole setting and enjoyed being in the hills, in my view preferable to Ooty. What was beyond expectations was to meet Shyla and hear about her interesting work with the Adavasi community and be fortunate to visit the local hospital they have created. So a great place to stay and learn about the local community. I'll be back. S
We stayed at Gouri farms over the Ugadi weekend. It was a great family vacation with my parents, brother, my wife, and our five-year old. The cottage was best suited for a family like ours, complete with a master bed room, a smaller bed room, a hall with dining area, and a kitchenette. Apart from the simple, tasty, homely fare prepared at Shyla's place for breakfasts, we cooked a couple more meals with fresh veggies from the nearby market and Turkey eggs from the farm itself. Ditching homegenised and packed milk that we're used to in the city, we relished the fresh milk from the cows in the farm itself. Was a great experience for the little one to watch the cows being milked. A walk down the road leads to beautiful plantations which are a birdwatcher's delight. The highlights are the Malabar Grey Hornbill, a regular visitor to a tree in the farm, and the resident family of Giant Squirrels. Refreshing to know how Shyla and family think of the fauna as co-owners of the farm rather than competing for the produce. Though the weather was a little warmer than what's usual for Gudalur, the farm itself was cool enough with all the trees around. It would've been better if we had just taken the KSRTC bus and stayed at the farm for the whole weekend rather than take a cab and do a day visit to Ooty.
I chose Shyla's bnb without knowing much about the area and it proved to be a real find. The accommodation is very spacious and well-equipped in a quiet, rural setting close to the bustling town of Gudalur. Shyla and her husband were extremely hospitable and made my stay highly enjoyable -- and very informative. Shyla arranged for a very helpful driver when I needed it and also invited me to visit the local school for tribal children -- a real treat. I don't hesitate to recommend the accommodation and would certainly stay there again.
