We really enjoyed our stay at Hale Moana. Marla was very friendly, gave us great local tips on getting around and made us feel very welcome while still giving us privacy. A few things we most enjoyed: the dogs were fun to have around, the lush grounds were peaceful -- we slept like babies, and absolutely love the outdoor shower! Yes--we would come back to stay here again! Mahalo!
I can highly recommend Hale Moana to anyone who's looking for making their stay on Maui truly relaxing and away from the big touristic masses. The little house provides everything you need and is very carefully decorated. I also loved the outdoor shower and the views from the deck into the garden. The property itself is situated only minutes away from Haiku (if you happen to go there check out Maui Kombucha!) and 15 minutes drive to Paia, which has small shops and great food options. It is also ideal if you're looking to explore the Central Valley and some hidden gems like the Sacred Gardens. The hosts were very sweet and friendly and brought me freshly harvested bananas and avocados, which I really appreciated. I truly enjoyed my stay at Hale Moana - thank you!
Unfortunately, I had a fall and was injured the day before we flew to Maui, leaving me bruised and battered. This meant I had a hard time with the futon bed in Hale Moana. I found Marla to be a wonderful hostess, and a lovely person to talk to. She was very nice about our need to check out early. We were glad we had two days in the Paia area and got to explore the north shore part of the island.
A wonderful little oasis! We loved how easy it was to get places (it's very near the Hana Highway) and the convenience of a little fridge and kitchenette. The owners were incredibly friendly, as were the animals! It was nice for us, since we left our two dogs on the mainland during our visit, to get to pet and play with Uila.
Love the outdoor shower and the bed was really comfy. The only thing that might bother some people is that Frankie the horse is, well, a horse, so the yard has a little bit of a farm smell. But hey, you're in the country! Bottom line, an adorable cozy little cottage and we will be back next time we're in Maui!!
Joe and I had an amazing time at Hale Moana! We've been back home for about a week and keep talking about how wonderful our time was. We didn't have a chance to meet Moana, but we did meet Marla, and she was so friendly and welcoming! The space itself was wonderful. Cozy, clean, and really was a home away from home. The small kitchen area was perfect for making coffee and eating something quickly in the morning before venturing off to see Maui. I wasn't sure about the outdoor shower before arriving, but honestly, it was wonderful! The water was always warm (even on the couple of rainy nights) and it was so nice to hear the birds. Uila and Daisy (the dogs) along with Frankenstein, the house horse, were also great. Uila would come and say hello just about every morning and whenever we returned. She was so friendly! Daisy didn't come by as often, but when she did, she was wonderful! There were treats in the closet area for the dogs, and we also picked up some carrots for Frankenstein. It was great to have some animal company! We also really appreciated the table and chairs on the porch as well as all of the things to use on the beach. We brought the snorkel equipment out to Makena to check out the snorkeling there. Finally -- the fruit! The property itself if beautiful and well situated, especially for the road to Hana, but the best thing about it was the fruit trees. We had fresh avocados right off the tree (so yummy!) and Marla told us to feel free to pick anything. We picked some tangerines and they were delicious -- also great for juice. Overall, our stay at Hale Moana was amazing! We hope to get back to Maui soon, and would love to stay there again! I can't say enough about how welcome we felt, and how clean and comfortable everything was at Hale Moana. Thank you to Moana and Marla for opening up your home!
Absolutely loved our stay- wish my husband's and my whole 2 week holiday was booked here! Beautiful property, peaceful, private setting and everyone was so nice and helpful. We flew home on the red-eye and were able to leave our bags in the main house for the day and borrow beach towels......even had use of the shower before flying home!!! But possibly our favourite part were the crazy, loveable dogs Uila and Daisy and of course Frankenstein!! Oh ya, also loved the outdoor shower!! Would recommend Hale Moana and would definitely stay again. Thanks so much!
Loved it!! Marla and Moana were both so nice, the place is very charming. Loved the outdoor shower! Loved the location and her dogs and Frankenstein, her horse are all so sweet! Had a great time and plan to go back.
This place small, but super cozy! We stayed 4 nights here, and had a great time. Moana and Marla were wonderful about communicating with us, making sure that we had everything we needed.
Pros: very clean space, beautiful scenery, outdoor shower, basket of fresh fruits, stocked kitchen (you can definitely cook here if you wanted), water sport gear and beach towels provided, great hosts, friendly dogs who greeted us every day when we came back, cool wildlife (we saw multiple geckos and variety of birds), free wifi (only detected by laptop for us, not phones)
Cons: no cell or data service (for Verizon and T-mobile at least), mosquitos (but citronella candle and mosquito coils were provided)
Overall, would definitely recommend this place if you don't mind the outdoors and want to stay someplace more interesting than a hotel!
We absolutely loved staying here! It is definitely small but special. From the moment we arrived at the property you could feel a great energy surround you. The outdoor shower was probably our favorite part with loves from the property's dogs as our second. Marla greeted us and was very lovely. We had fresh fruit every day from the property and really enjoyed coming "home" to this peaceful cottage every evening. Thank you Moana and Marla!
Stayed 3 nights at Moana's place while in Maui. This place is truly special and a must. Very cozy and small enough for 1 or 2 people, but you'll want to be outside at this location. The grounds are filled with lush vegetation and fruits to be had. Don't buy fruits at the market if you're staying here. Moana was out surfing overseas, but her sister and family were very nice. Uila and Daisy were very friendly dogs that would welcome us home and visit once in a while. Not a bother at all. Kitchen is small, but has all the essentials. Bed is comfortable and spacious. TV/iPod dock/DVD players are nice. The outside shower...Wow...that is awesome. The placement of the building is perfect: porch looks toward the ocean, gets sunlights at an angle, view of fruit trees, is private, and it is covered. There is hammock for relaxing and chairs looking toward hale moana. The property is well kept, the place is very clean. I sat for a long time looking and listening to the birds. Very nice treat. A walk around the property allowed us to appreciate the different trees, plants, and flowers. The boogie board, cooler umbrella, beach towels, and snorkeling gear was great also. This side of the island is more damp, but when we stayed there it was sunnier than the other side due to winds from the South (Kona winds) dropping any precip. on the otherwise drier side slopes. Access to Ho'okipa beach (surfing paradise) was great, and at one end of the beach turtles come out to the beach at sunset. Another treat. Access to Haleakala National Park and the cool Upcountry (Kula, Haiku, and Makawao) is excellent. It took less time to go see the sunrise from the summit. Great botanical gardens, flowers for sale, Ocean vodka distillery, Surfing Goat dairy (awesome cheese), and many attractions like zip lines and bicycling down the volcano are in this area. Close to kahului and airport also. Beautiful place, great scenery, close to a lot of fun stuff, great hosts, and dare I say, romantic.
