Within walking distance of Mills College, Sanctuary is a private, clean and comfortable room in our artsy home, with free parking. We offer an affordable haven on a safe, tree-lined street in a multi-cultural middle-class neighborhood, and within proximity of major transport lines. Our family home is full of ...well...family life, with a 19-year old, and one parent who works from home, and the other off-site.

If you are comfortable with a diverse, multi-cultural community this is your place!

The space
The quiet, private room is downstairs and features a plush double bed, a table with kitchenette supplies - microwave, mini-fridge, coffee/teapot, paper goods. Also has a clothing rack and shelf unit for storage in a roomy, light-filled house.

The room is set off from the rest of the house and is adjacent to a full bathroom, painted a beautiful cherry red, with a shower/bathtub - shared with our 18-yo daughter.

The room has big windows to let in light and is at the back of the house, which opens onto a patio at the end of a hallway, providing a back entrance to the house for complete privacy of entry and exit. A great space for a traveler, whether weekday business person or weekend visitors, perfect for short stays especially, but longer stays have been very satisfactory. Our guests have loved this room!

ACCESSIBILITY
We are working on making our space more accessible for people in wheelchairs and using walkers, but it will take some time - we have some work to do on that front! There is a lighted pathway for nighttime visibility.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT OUR LOCATION:
We are located on a very safe street, in a nice family-oriented surrounding neighborhood, with friendly neighbors, however, it is not in an up-scale part of Oakland.

To the east of our immediate neighborhood is a lower-income area.

If you are looking for an upscale neighborhood with cafes and shopping etc within walking distance, this might not be satisfactory for you.

However, it's very easy and quick to go to a nearby area for good coffee, and public transportation is plentiful and close at hand.
We tend to use services such as Lyft to get around, especially later at night.

We feel completely safe to walk the dog at all hours, and we've never had any issues. But it's a question of your personal comfort level with being in the mix of cultures, communities, and levels of wealth. We welcome people of all cultures, races, religions and ethnicity, country of origin, and gender identity - and we especially welcome people who identify as women.

Where you’ll be

Oakland, California, United States

We love our street. Sweet neighbors who talk to each other. If you love connecting to diverse communities we are within walking distance of Mills College, and just down the road from Lakeshore Ave, area and the lively, downtown - uptown arts and food scene.
Add to that very easy, accessible public transportation to San Francisco and beyond, make this a fantastic place to launch your weekend or work-week.

I live in Oakland and my days are filled with my kids, my home, community and job. Our 19 year-old daughter lives at home, and my 26 year-old son lives close by and comes to visit pretty often. So with all that the house is a busy (sometimes messy version of life) but all good. We aren't a pristine B&B -- just a homey home with kids, dogs and kitty cats. I was once a chef and owned a catering business but now I work helping elders move into assisted living care. Amy my partner is a theater professional - former Artistic Director of the Playwrights Foundation in San Francisco. So if you like theater, futbol, food and wine you have come to the right place. And Maggie the dog and Rosie & Mocha the cats welcome you too.

During your stay

We respect our guests' privacy - and offer as little or much interaction as desired. If our guests have the desire, we welcome friendly conversation, at times sharing a meal, a glass of wine, and tips on interesting places to go in the area -- from theater, art, and interesting neighborhoods, to the North Coast wine country, and sports stadiums.

There is a mini-fridge, microwave and coffee/tea/hotwater maker in the room, with disposable plates, bowels and utensils.

We are in and out all day on weekdays, and out and about and home on weekends.
