Enjoy 18th century hospitality at the gateway to the Litchfield Hills. Stay in a large, elegantly paneled room with a private bath and fireplace, on the most historic street in the center of Connecticut's antiques capital. We are about 90 minutes from New York, 45 minutes from New Haven, and close to museums of all sizes and varieties, walks, hikes and scenic drives. Interstate Route 84 is minutes away, and Bradley International Airport, outside Hartford, is about 50 minutes away. There is bus service from New York to nearby Southbury.
Our room sleeps two in a double bed and if needed we can accommodate additional people in other rooms for an extra charge (they would have to share a bathroom). Continental Breakfast is offered for short stays. Will share kitchen facilities for weekly or longer rentals. Pets are okay. We've got internet access, plenty of parking, but no television.
There are two historic house museums on our street (open seasonally), and the lovely Pomperaug River is across the street with trails and playgrounds.
The house is currently on the market, so please be sensitive to the possibility of someone coming in to view it.
Children are welcome.
Pets, okay, but dogs should be kept in a crate or under control while in the house.
What a treat it was to step back in time and experience this wonderful and original 18th century house. It is beautiful. When we arrived after a long day of travel, Sarah graciously brought a soothing pot of tea to our room. The next morning we had delicious scones and pastries (from the local French bakery) in front of a warm fire in the library. Sarah is a perfect host and we really enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended!
Sarah was wonderful and very accommodating to my girlfriend and I along with our 2 dogs.
Sarah was a gracious host who made us feel welcome in her intriguing, historic home in Woodbury. I would recommend without hesitation Sarah and her home to prospective airbnb guests. Thank you.
My boyfriend and I stayed a night at Sarah's colonial home and had a wonderful experience! Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated and the bed was extremely comfortable. Sarah was a very sweet and gracious host. She was happy to suggest things to do in the area and restaurants to check out. If we are ever in the area again we would love to come back and stay here!
Our stay with Sarah was exactly what we were looking for: a quiet weekend get-away some bucolic place with character. The house is steeped in history with an amazing fireplace on the ground floor. Stay here if you want to get a sense of what early American merchant housing was like! Sarah herself is a gracious and accommodating host. A lovely person with a lovely house in a lovely setting. Perfect.
We came to Sarah's place for a weekend. The house, the room and the surroundings were all perfect. Will definitely stay there again and recommend if i have the chance.
We would highly recommend Sarah's unique period accommodation. Sarah is a friendly host who has a wealth of local knowledge and was very helpful. We were overwhelmed with her outstanding property in a beautiful country setting. There are plenty of eating places and supermarkets nearby. The pewter shop was a highlight.

I am a museum consultant and caretaker of my family's historic home. I have a deep and abiding interest in local history, historic preservation, art, gardens and the natural world. I am happiest when engaged in conversations with people who are curious about the world and open to experiences. I enjoy meeting Airbnb visitors, finding them generally interesting, friendly and open. I want you to feel welcome in my home and tend to be a relaxed hostess. I leave you to yourselves, unless you'd rather engage, in which case I'm happy to talk.
