Car: Recommended 4WD
There is public transit both from the airport to Villa Millon and from Villa Millon to La Fortuna and various activities. Please call us for more information on the alternative transportation options.
From San Jose, take the Panamerican Highway to San Ramon, exit when you see the sign directing you to San Ramon and drive through the town of San Ramon following the signs of the Arenal volcano route. You will go through Bajo Rodriguez, La Tigra, Chachauga and then finally to La Fortuna. When you get to La Fortuna go west through the town and pass Tabacon on your right, then go a few more miles (about 4) until you see a tiny little police station on your right..you will take a left there onto a dirt road. Go 3 or 4 miles until you get to an intersection (T) where you must take a left or right. You will see a lot of signs directing you to different places in El Castillo. You will take a left. Go another few miles until you go over a small bridge and take your next right...at more signs. Keep going straight. You will pass the Sky Trek and continue to follow the road for a few miles, keep driving until you go over another small bridge. The first left after this bridge is the entrance to our village. Go through the village proper and then up the hill and you will pass the Serpentarium, then the Butterfly Conservatory (the house is approximately 600 meters from here)..continue going up and you will see Essence Arenal on the right. You will pass two streets on your right and then your house is the 6th house on the right. There are two stone pillars at the end of the drive holding a gate to the property. Please call us when you arrive in La Fortuna and either myself or our caretaker will meet you there. If for some reason we miss each other there will be a key in a combination lockbox. Villa Millon was a great start to our vacation in Costa Rica. Ericka lives up the street and greeted us and helped us with anything we needed during our stay. The house is in El Castillo and the location makes you feel you have really gotten away, and it was quite a pretty drive from Liberia. The roads to access the village are quite bumpy and rough, but we found it to be a great adventure. A 4x4 car would be helpful in accessing the property. The views of the lake are spectacular as you are driving down. There are beautiful flowers and trees on the property, which is gated. The view of Arenal is really impressive to wake up to.
The house itself is great for a family. We have 3 kids (under 7) and there was plenty of space for us all. As you can see from the pictures, the rooms are separated by partitions, so it might not work as well for multiple couples seeking privacy, though it was perfect for a family.
We were within a 20 minute drive of the Arenal Hanging Bridges Park and 45 minutes from La Fortuna, so it's nice to be in a quiet village but with access to larger areas and attractions. The town is quite small and the grocery store and nearby restaurant options are limited. We cooked in one of our two nights which worked well for our kids. We drove to La Fortuna for the other night.
Tricia was helpful, responsive, and easy to work with as we planned our stay.
1) Patricia was a great host. She is nice, timely, professional, and gave great instructions on how to find the house
2) the view is amazing! you We would sit on the the front porch every morning drinking coffee and eating chicken eggs left by our host while enjoying the view of Arenal
3) the house is large, clean, and modern
1) the house is about 30-40 minutes from La Fortuna so if you have lots of things planned (excursions, dinner, etc), this location might be a little inconvenient but if you don't plan on going into town, this place is a gem!
2) The place was a little more expensive than listed. There was another fee that was added
We had a wonderful time visiting El Castillo and the house was a perfect home base. The views from the front yard and living room are spectacular! The neighborhood is quiet. The rooms are large with comfortable furniture. The house is immaculately clean and well appointed for guests. Patricia was a very easy host to work with and her neighbors checked it to see if we needed anything. We would definitely stay here again next time we are visiting
Amazing location minutes away from Arenal park. Beautiful view of volcano from house. Very friendly host and easy to work with.
A great place to stay if traveling to the Arenal area! The house is located in the small town of El Castillo, which is a short 15 minute drive to the trail base of the volcano as well as the main ziplining/adventure tour company. It's also pretty close (about a 30 minute drive) to the main hot spring locations.
The house was just as advertised - has a beautiful view of the volcano from the main room (if the weather is clear) and plenty of room to relax after a day of exploring. It was nice to have our own kitchen since the area is pretty small and the main restaurant options are either very touristy or quiet in the slower seasons.
We felt completely safe and at home in the house and didn't have any issues. If there is a problem or you need guidance, the neighbors are very helpful.
All in all, a great option in the area!
Beautiful house on a hill with view from the large glass front on the Arenal vulcano (not in the rainy season due to the hanging clouds). Very comfortable with everything you need available.
Situated in small village with a steep road of rocks and mud going up to the house, a 4x4 is mandatory to get there (in my opion, the locals probably think otherwise).
The largest part of the house is a kind of "loft" arangement, with partionwalls between the bedrooms, bathroom and spaceous living/kitchen about 3,5m in height not reaching up to the much higher roof. I think that is very nicely done, but part of my company didn't like the effect that you could hear all sounds from the bathroom and bedrooms in the living and vice versa. At the back is another seperate bedroom with bathroom.
Patricia sent all needed information and more, well in advance by mail and I didn't need any assistance from the local keeper, the young woman from a neighbouring house, who greeted use in minutes after arrival.
So, all in all I think a very nice place to spend your holiday.
I love being active and love to travel. I fell in love with Costa Rica - Specifically the Arenal Area as El Castillo is approximately 2000 feet above sea level in the rain forest where the temperature is mod(phone number hidden) degrees Fahrenheit with cooling breezes and beautiful countryside.
I cannot live without bicycling, skiing, my friends, my husband, books and Television - Almost but not necessarily in that order.
The most unforgettable book that I have ever read is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I love the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. My favorite adventure and espionage writer is Nelson Demille because he interjects humer into his main characters. I loved the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon about life in Scotland during its revolt with England and the early days of the settlement of America all combined with time travel.
Two of my most favorite travel destinations are Italy and Costa Rica and when I go I like to join bicycling tours and see the country by bike.
One of my favorite book series and movies was the Hunger Games. I loved the movies Top Gun and also Knights Tale and I mustn't forget The Princess Bride.
I am still a rock music enthusiast as it is very good listening for Biking, skiing and rollerblading. I also like Pucini Operas.
I have to confess that I am a gluttin for carbs which I must reduce at my age and have gotten into juicing. My favorite juice is Banana, green grapes, Orange, pineapple, spinach, slice of lime and crushed ice.
As your Airbnb host I will provide you with a cozy environment that I would live in (and I have). I supplied and decorated the house in a style and comfort pleasing to me as if I were to live there. The renting of my vacation home is a work in progress, and I am open to any and all suggestions because my aim is to ensure my guest's comfort and enjoyment.
