About this listing

The last house in the hamlet with only fields beyond and very quiet. Tastefully furnished with private outdoor seating area, BBQ & access to newly renovated outdoor swimming pool (photo coming soon) We are also walking distance from the Steiner School, Shumacher College, Dartington Hall, village shop & The Cott Inn. Totnes is less than 2 miles away along a river path. Fantastic walks (or runs) from the door.

The space

This apartment is part of the last house in the village with only fields beyond and is very quiet. The loudest sound is usually the whistle from the local steam railway over a mile away. However BT Infinity fast broadband has just arrived & there's pretty good mobile reception (for Devon) so you won't be completely cut off!
The apartment is completely self-contained with its own entrance and has a good-sized bright bedroom/studio with a table and chairs, a small kitchen area (with sink, fridge, kettle, toaster, tea and coffee making and a gas cooker with hob and oven), a bathroom (with bath and thermostatically controlled shower) and an entrance hall area with space to hang coats.
The room is tastefully furnished with a stone Minster working fireplace, an Art deco desk, Ercol quaker chairs and original oil paintings and etchings. There is also a large 30in LCD TV with DVD player (photo not updated yet) and a Sony clock/radio/ipod player. During the winter firewood is supplied for the open fire.
There is also a very sunny, private outside seating area with a table, two chairs and a small BBQ overlooking the front garden. There's plenty of wild life! We regularly see deer and rare Green Woodpeckers as well as all the more common birds.

You can park your car right outside the apartment.

The 5ft ziplink double bed splits into two singles if required ( photo not yet updated) We can provide a camp-bed for a 3rd person (or child) for a small additional cost. However due to the limited space we don't recommend this for stays of longer than 3 nights maximum.
The kitchen is small so if you want to cook 3 course dinners every night it's probably not for you.

Guest access

Full access to the whole apartment.

Interaction with guests

I'm available on phone and email prior to your arrival. And as I live next door I'm there to help if you have any questions or need anything.

Other things to note

The house was built in 1962 and was designed by modernist Arthur Grayson for the novelist and composer Bruce Montgomery. Montgomery was quite well known at the time and wrote the music for the first 6 Carry on movies. He was also a friend of Agatha Christie who apparently came to dinner at the house.

Ben's place is in a good spot, the space is small and the decor and furnishings are tired, and belong in the 90's

After reading a few reviews about the accommodation needing updating etc, we didn't really know what to expect. We were absolutely made-up when we saw how ideal the accommodation was. It's just a perfect size for a couple's getaway with place to sit and eat, an ideal little kitchenette (perfect for a fry up and a simple evening meal!), a big, bright bathroom and a super comfy bed! It is a cottage at the end of the day and we really liked feeling like we were in a cottage. We made use of the BBQ outside and, with the fantastic weather, enjoyed dining alfresco most nights. It is so peaceful and quiet, and yet so close to everything we wanted to visit. We had a brilliant time!

NOT for seniors expecting a little comfort, and certainly NOT as fresh looking or as charming as the picture appears.

A very cosy and functional self-contained flat. We spent one week with a friend of mine. We were there for a course and the location was perfect. We asked ben for logs for the fireplace one evening and it was lovely. Ben is always at the end of the phone if you need anything. and he even put in the post a folder I forgot there. I would highly recommend it. The area is beautiful and peaceful as well.

Great location and nice set up, it had all we needed to get by. Perhaps improved with a little tlc.

A lovely, peaceful stay with everything needed to relax. We would have liked a few more logs for the fire though as we arrived late evening and didn't have enough to see us through until we could find a shop.

Director of a holiday cottage agency called West Country Lets in Devon. We specialise in hand-picked cottages and apartments in the South Hams and Devon areas.
I moved out of London in summer 2010 to Devon. Married with two teenage sons and in my spare time into cycling (on and off road), trail running. skiing and the occasional triathlon.
In the past I worked as a journalist & magazine publisher but more recently have run my own companies: a dating company, a travel company and now my agency.
I'm happy with lots of styles of travelling. I have particularly fond memories of cycle camping around Europe. But a bit of luxury can be good too.
