This lovingly renovated 125-year-old schoolhouse is nestled in a peaceful rural canyon just two miles from Pacific Ocean beaches and downtown Half Moon Bay.
A tasteful blend of furnishings and decor create a warm atmosphere of rustic elegance. The gourmet kitchen, with custom cabinets, Viking Stove and stainless steel appliances, opens onto the living room with wall-to-wall windows and a stone fireplace - perfect for socializing while you cook. The dining room overlooks the canyon, and the large den offers views of the garden and has shelves full of books, movies and games - and a huge couch to enjoy them all. Heated floors and radiant heat throughout. Flower, vegetable and herb gardens - and farm fresh eggs from our entertaining, friendly and colorful hens!
The front decks overlooking the yard and gardens, back deck with hot tub, gas BBQ and glass dining table, two adult and one youth bicycles, games, media, a closet full of hundreds of great DVDs. Oh yes -- and fresh eggs daily from our beautiful hens!
Interaction with Guests
I am usually here to greet guests, but since I live in the house when it's not rented, I do not stay overnight. I do have a caretaker on the property who can answer any questions.
I live close to town but it feels like miles away.
We have 1/2 acre but neighbors have 40-100 acres, mostly eucalyptus trees and hills for hiking.
You will need a car to stay here. Public transport is not convenient.
Other Things to Note
I won't be there to serve breakfast -- but you'll have plenty of fresh eggs and coffee!
No smoking in the house. No parties or events hosted without agreement with host. No pets.
Gail was welcoming and hospitable. She was very thoughtful in accommodating us for a somewhat last-minute booking for the weekend of my mother's memorial service. My siblings and I really wanted to be able to all stay together, and she facilitated that and allowed for a really special weekend together. Her home is rustic and lovely, with terrific light and very comfortable bedrooms and common areas. My two year old and her cousin delighted in the bunnies and chickens. We enjoyed the gas grill and peaceful setting on the back deck. Altogether a wonderful stay.
This place was amazing! Bigger than anticipated, hot tub and BBQ, and chickens and a great garden to watch from a hammock in the sun. Gail was great, so were the neighbors for answering any extra questions. Would definitely stay again...
I had a great time staying at the Higgins Hideaway. The location was beautiful, the house was comfortable and enjoyable, and I was able to run a corporate event-planning retreat there without any issues. I would come back again, and recommend others to check this place out!
