Private room with a queen bed & a private full bathroom. Shared kitchen, dining room, living room, & back yard. Cary & JeanMarie also live at the JMH & may have up to 2 more rooms rented.
The John Mason House is Detroit's oldest brick residence in Detroit's oldest neighborhood, Corktown. Named after the brewer who commissioned the house in 1852, the JMH sits just off of Michigan Avenue eight blocks from the center of downtown Detroit.
The house itself has gone through many uses in its long life, and now currently serves as my residence and occasionally an ambassador to people visiting this great city, whether they are just coming from the suburbs or from much further afield.
Previously the house served as full time bed and breakfast, so each bedroom contains a unique theme (which I didn't change) as well as its own private bathroom. This listing is for the Water Room, which is decorated with a slight nautical theme, is furnished with a queen bed and has a white marble bathroom with jacuzzi tub. It is on the second floor of the house and has three windows with southern exposure.
The rest of the house besides the bedrooms is available for all guests to utilize. There is a sitting area with a wood-burning fireplace, a dining area and a kitchen with an 8 burner viking range. The JMH also has a large, fenced back yard perfect for relaxing in during the warmer months. In addition to me, my girlfriend JeanMarie lives here and this summer her sister is living in the attic bedroom. We also have a dog named Abby - she is a 2 1/2 year old brindle pit mix who was rescued from Detroit. She is a total sweetheart & ruled by her stomach but she will sometimes bark when you come in when we're not there. There are treats by the door.
The Corktown neighborhood itself has a lot to offer for visitors to Detroit. Located just eight blocks from the center of the city, it is very convenient for every Detroit activity. We are approximately one mile from the Foxtown entertainment district, Comerica Park, Ford Field, Hart Plaza and the Riverfront and just a little bit more to the Renassance Center and the historic Eastern Market. As well, cultural landmarks such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Motown Museum and the Heidelberg Project are all within three miles.
For local food and drink, very close to the house is PJ's Lager House bar, which is well known for its live music offerings, & the Detroit Bagel Institute. Also nearby is Nemo's bar and grill, which is Detroit's best sports bar. Located a little further away are Slow's BBQ, Mudgie's Deli, Le Petit Zinc bar, Sugar House bar, Onassis Coney Island and many others. For those who like to cook in house the Honey Bee Market is just down the street, and of course the Eastern Market is easily accessible on Tuesday nights and all day Saturday.
As for the little details, there is wireless internet, but no cable television. The washer and dryer are available for use if necessary, and linens, towels and basic toiletries will be provided. Street parking is also available.
We will greet you to give you a tour of the house, show you your room, & give you a set of keys. Check out is as simple as leaving the keys, as the door will lock behind you.
Other things to note
When there aren't guests in the water room, Abby uses it for naps and JeanMarie as an office & closet.
No smoking inside.
Please leave your shoes at the front door.
Hello everyone, I'm Cary. Hopefully you'll find staying with me in Detroit as great as I find sharing my house and this great city with friends and travelers who spend time here. My own personal style of traveling is looking for the little gems on the beaten path - I do love the famous sights, but at the same time I like to find the places where the locals hang out.
