A restored traditional Irish thatched cottage for holiday lets just off the Wild Atlantic Way, Donegal, Ireland.

This 18th century cottage has been restored and retains many of it’s original features. Lime and sand mortars have been used on the stone walls and lint (flax) thatch on the roof. This type of cottage is disappearing from the Irish landscape and soon people will be saying where did all the thatched cottages go. My main objective is to keep this cottage standing as long as I can.

The space

It has underfloor heating, washing and cooking facilities integrated into it’s original design. It is furnished with period and antique furniture.

The cottage is rented as a self-catering holiday home. It is an ideal location for hill walking, touring, pony trekking, fishing or just getting away from it all. This area has some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in Ireland and of course bars resturantes and music pubs.

Interaction with guests

I live in Dublin so I only get to meet some guests but I can be contacted by text or phone at any time should there be a problem.

No doubt this is what you need if you are searching for peace and calm! This cottage is clearly old fashioned, in a good way, and it feels very warm inside. We were 6 guys there and we had a blast! Photos are clearly not representative of the space you have there. Only the doors are lower than usual and gave us some bruises but that's all! The kitchen is big and it's easy to cook there. I would definitely come back!

Robert is a great host and was very helpful. The cottage was just what we wanted and needed. We had such a wonderful time that we did not want to come home. I will recommend this place to all my friends.

Had a wonderful stay in this charming cottage. Everything we where looking for. Tranquil and super relaxed. Old traditional cottage with mod cons to make it very comfortable. Close enough to nearby villages. We will be back. Thanks for a great stay.

My sister and I spent five lovely nights at the cottage, and wished we could've stayed longer. The cottage is off a less-traveled road that leads to the village of Kerrykeel, and is quiet, rustic, and cozy with heated floors, and we lit turf fires in the evenings. (Our initial fire was rather smoky, but we finally got the hang of it.) We felt a real sense of history with this place, and felt removed from the rest of the world, which for us was wonderful. It made a great base for exploring Donegal as well. We made friends with the spiders that live in the corners. Usually, I'm afraid of spiders, but because they were of the daddy longleg variety, I didn't have any issues with them. A few kitchen staples were provided, such as olive oil, salt and pepper, tea and coffee, and there were some herbs growing out front (thyme and rosemary), which helped out our cooking situation. The water seems to have a high iron content, so we alternated between tap and bottled water. The reflective vests by the door are essential for any evening walk into town for a pint. It gets very dark out there and people drive very fast! (On clear nights, we were amazed by the stars.) Robert was a wonderful host with great communication and we had no problems arriving or departing. The neighbor was very kind and helpful, and she let us pet her goats! Overall we had a great stay and would definitely stay again if we find ourselves in Donegal. Thanks, Robert!
