Interested in keeping a low carbon footprint while enjoying all the comforts and fun of an island vacation? Designed and maintained with the wellness of guests and the earth in mind, my newly renovated suite is perfect for visitors wishing to honor their Maui experience. Walk to uncrowded beaches, windsurfing & surf– Ku‘au is central to all attractions on Maui. Staying on the North Shore offers that "local" feel and great proximity to Paia town, Road to Hana, airport, Haleakala Hwy, and more.

The space
My Airbnb is a private one bedroom, one bathroom condo within walking distance of the beach in the charming neighborhood of Ku'au. It's suitable for adventurers, couples, small families, and business travelers looking for an affordable yet elegant getaway on Maui’s North Shore.

Finding Maui's secret spots at uncrowded times is something I sometimes take for granted as a local. Being on the north shore will give you a big advantage in seeing Maui's gems exclusively. Ku'au is a beachfront neighborhood featuring the world famous restaurant, Mama's Fish House, and world-class windsurfing & kitesurfing at nearby Ho'okipa and Lanes. Downtown Paia is just a mile away and is a culturally rich community with plenty of restaurants, boutiques, and beaches. In my place, you're a two minute stroll from the lanai to the beach. There’s also a small convenience store one minute away and several more beaches just a few minutes away.

One to four guests are welcome in my condo. Sleep in the king size bed in the bedroom or on the queen sleeper-sofa in the living room. The kitchen is big enough for "a couple cooks in the kitchen" and is a great space for family time. It's also open to the living room with the TV and the view of the backyard.

When designing the bedroom, I wanted to offer extra comfort and solve the disturbances that can come with being next to the highway. The bedroom is fit with a king-size bed with a medium-firm memory foam mattress, all-cotton linens, and medium-firm down pillows. Set the mood in the bedroom with the adjustable dimmer on the fan, bedside lamp, and dreamy twinkle lights lining the mirrors. Let in the natural sunlight and breeze by opening the windows during the day or lower the blackout roller shades at night. The trade winds keep the unit mostly cool, or you may turn on the quiet ceiling fan to keep cool on warmer nights. There are supplemental floor fans stored in the closet as well. The closet with full-length mirror doors is large enough to fit your luggage, water sports gear, and laundry. Find the laundry supplies, extra linens, and broom accessible in the closet so you can keep the condo comfortably clean. Open up the large sliding doors to a hallway out to the kitchen and living room.

Wash up after a beach day or before your Mama’s reservation in the bathroom with the provided zero-waste soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and 100% cotton towels. The walk-in shower has a fixed waterfall head and a faucet. Bathroom door can be locked from the inside. Two sets of six towels are provided; a hairdryer, bandaids, and lotion are also supplied.

Prepare a meal while socializing with loved ones, watching TV, and enjoying the view together in the open kitchen and living room. The kitchen is supplied with all new appliances: a coffee maker, electric stove, oven, cookware, cutting boards, barbecue utensils (outdoor grill in common area), microwave, toaster, kettle, assorted tea bags, dishwasher, compost bin, Brita filter, olive oil, sugar, s&p, several condiments, and spices. All textiles are cotton, plastic is minimal, and recycling and composting are encouraged.

Set the round table for breakfast or dinner out on the private lanai (patio) as well. Plan your day trips over a cup of coffee, sit at the work space of your dreams, or just relax and watch for "Coco" the parrot flying in the distant sunset. Expanding out into a large grassy backyard, feel free to run down to the beach whenever you want. Set up a picnic or yoga mat outside and enjoy the sun and breeze. Kids love running around the yard and spotting geckos on the palm trees.

Just hang loose in the living room and log on to your own Netflix account on the Smart TV. Roll out the yoga mat, play board games with your loved ones or read into the Maui-themed magazines and books all with the sound of palm trees in the wind and natural sunlight spilling in. Louvered windows and sliding glass door open up the entire north-facing wall and can let in the breeze. You may easily rearrange the coffee table and have the option to rest on the queen size sleeper-sofa. Light-filtering curtains give privacy and darkness.

One-of-a-kind green hospitality gives you the chance to minimize your carbon footprint with minimal duties on your part. There is no air conditioning, keep in mind that Maui is a tropical environment and can get warm and humid. The products and materials provided in the accommodation are the environmentally-friendly alternatives to mainstream choices. My design addresses waste minimization and management, energy and water efficiency, indoor air pollution, and more. I host this Airbnb with the intention of revealing the natural beauty of Maui and showing how we can respect it as guests of the Earth.

Guest access
The entire condo unit to yourself...
2 minute walk to the beach
Ground floor level gives easy access and expanded sense of space to grassy backyard
Washer, dryers in community laundry house
One reserved parking stall directly outside the unit

Other things to note
No air conditioning– open the windows and experience Maui's famous breeze. The fans are new and work well.

Hawaii is a tropical environment, therefore insects may be seen in & outdoors year-round. Building maintenance includes quarterly outdoor spraying. Spot-treatment is done indoors as-needed in safe areas. Please store all food & drinks in the fridge or airtight containers, and clean up crumbs and spills thoroughly. The most common pests that you may see include ants, small beetles, gnats, geckos, and cockroaches. Keeping the screen door closed should keep out any flying insects like mosquitoes. *No refunds or adjustments for pest control issues. Please let me know if you are bothered by any pests. I’ll be happy to help.

Potential for noise - the condominium is on the makai (ocean side) of Hana Highway, so there is street noise in the bedroom. Closing the windows and turning on the fan helps keep it quiet and cool. Walls and ceiling are soundproof.

Security Deposit - if the unit is damaged by the guest, they may be charged up to $500

Location

Paia, Hawaii, United States

My place is one of several vacation rentals located in the only condominium in the area. Just outside Paia town, Ku'au is a historic neighborhood that sits along the shoreline and Hana Highway. It’s outside the hustle of downtown but conveniently located next to a remote beach, a cute locally-owned grocery store, and the luxurious beachfront restaurant that is Mama’s Fish House. The condo has a view of the backyard overlooking attractive homes owned and operated by Mama’s. The area is safe and visitor-friendly. Just walk down the road through the beautiful houses to the water.
The condo is just a mile away from downtown Paia. Paia is a quaint beach town with an interesting and authentic hippie culture and lots of little shops and diverse restaurants. Take a quick drive or walk to town for a relaxed day of shopping, lunch, and enjoying the sun at Paia Bay Beach park. Just up the hill from Paia is Makawao on Baldwin Avenue– another historical and cute town with stylish shops, restaurants, and Makawao forest. Keep going and you're on your way to Haleakala National Park, the volcano summit and crater.
Weather in Ku'au is tropical and is exposed to the north shore's weather of sun and fresh salt air in the wind. Summer is warm, sunny, and breezy with trade winds. Summer is also hurricane season in Hawaii, which may mean rain or stronger winds, but hurricanes are often much more mild than forecasted for Maui. "Winter" in Maui equals big surf and calm winds. Springtime has comfortable temperatures, tropical, blooming flowers everywhere, and peaceful ocean waters.
