About this listing
We ask a 2-night minimum. The Gustavus Getaway is a private house located in Gustavus, a small community in southeast Alaska, nestled at the entrance of Glacier Bay National Park. The house is easily accessible from Juneau by air taxi, jet, or ferry. Our minimum stay is 3 days this summer.
This wood paneled, 600 sq ft, two story, cozy cottage is in its own secluded corner, yet located in the heart of Gustavus. The cottage has a spacious, open, sunny interior with many windows. Fully furnished and equipped with most household items, there is a full kitchen with stove and microwave, full bath with a claw foot tub, and washer/dryer. A queen size bed and twin futon are located in the upstairs loft. A double size "click-clack" couch is located on the main floor to accommodate one or two more people. We invite you to settle in for a piece of Alaskan solitude.
Gustavus is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle (provided) or to take in any of the fun and exciting summer Alaskan adventures.
We will provide you with an information sheet listing local excursions - day boat trips in Glacier Bay National Park, kayak, whale watching, or fishing trip adventures. You will know all you need to know to contact, schedule and book your trips for your stay. Joyce is the Gustavus manager and she will be in contact with you after you book regarding your specific trip plans.
All local taxes are included in the nightly booking cost. We look forward to your call!

The cottage is situated in the middle of town. This means that the rural road is a short walk to the Salmon River Park and a few minutes bike ride to 4-Corners and Dock Road.
No public transit in this rural town. Bicycles are provided. Rental cars are available. Yes, definitely parking. There are a couple taxi and tour companies. There are some shuttles to specific activities as well.
Please, no smoking or pets allowed inside the Cottage. Check in time is 3 PM, check out time is 11 AM. Please contact Joyce, the local Manager, or Joanie, if check in or check out times need to be adjusted.
Joanie's cottage in Gustavus is a perfect place to stay. It is just as comfortable and functional inside as it is cute outside. Its a perfect location and her bikes were a big benefit. The big soaking tub by the window was heaven.
A very peaceful spot and very well equipped though in need of a good clean. Be aware that you asked not to put toilet paper down the lavatory in the usual way but to store it in a bucket.
Michael, I will do what I can to warn people that the septic system is not to take toilet paper. It is a common practice in most rural areas. Also, you mentioned that Aimee's does not have the problem with mineral discoloration as mine does -- Aimee's is the exception in Gustavus as she is lucky to have tapped in to a very deep well and has good water. Most Gustavus properties, unfortunately, couldn't find water that deep in this "unique' land form known as a glacial alluvia. I apologize for your discomfort with it.
Exactly as we had hoped. Charming, secluded, and close to town. Joanie arranged for a ride to pick us up from the ferry, and we were greeted by a moose and calf grazing in the front yard! Amazing little place, very comfy.
Wonderful and quaint cabin. We loved it. We had a warm welcome and orientation, a beautiful view, lots of bikes to use to get a pizza, go to beach. Strawberry was a good taxi service to go to lodge for the day long boat tour , which was fabulous! I wish we could have stayed longer. Wonderful place and wonderful host.
This is really a cabin in the woods. It is far enough from the rest of the town, and there is not much town, but close enough to walk or bicycle, which are provided. The cabin itself is well provisioned and comfortable. The views from the house include woods and meadow - a moose and her calf were grazing while we ate breakfast. Would I go back to this cabin in Gustavus? Maybe if I were going back to Gustavus. Would I recommend this cabin if you were going to Gustavus? Yes, definitely.
A group of 4 of us stayed here, and we were met by a very nice lady named Joyce who explained the workings of this rural cabin, and settled us in. The cabin had 6 bikes, and we really enjoyed riding around town and getting the small-town experience!
The cabin is adorable, exactly as described, and nestled in spruce woods near the center of "town." A moose and her 2 babies walked through the yard while we were here!
One word of advice: get a rental car if you plan to go to Glacier Bay! The local taxi service is exorbitantly expensive ($120 to get 4 people there, and back to the cabin!!!). Bud's rental car rates are reasonable for the isolated location.
I would absolutely recommend this cabin!

About the Host, Joanie
Artist, traveler, long-time Alaskan, and great risk- taker. My home is in the little remote town of Gustavus, but I moved into the "big city" of Juneau to take a job. I tell folks "I'm 'In Town' for a decade". So, I've fixed up the Gustavus Getaway, and hired Lori as Manager to share my Gustavus cottage with visitors during the summer months. I bought a place in Juneau, along with the adjacent home, built in 1910, with the intent of renovating them for the fun of it. With the vision of putting a roof-garden on top of the cottage right in the middle of downtown Juneau (stay tuned!)!, the renovation project seems to have taken on a life of its own - resulting in the Stone's Throw Cottage. The two cottages are just asking for an adventure package to link them together via a 20-minute plane ride or a 4-hour ferry ride; still working on that. Thus far I have only met wonderful people who have appreciated the two places separately - and I have appreciated hearing about and being a part of their traveling adventures.
