Stay in a country Doctor's century home in rural Ontario, as one of our guests said, “Walking in the door to the Doctor's House is like entering the portal to another era. The décor and attention to detail sweep you back to the feeling and charm of a younger Canada in it's beginnings. The Doctor's House is really a home with a welcome in every room.”
We serve home cooked local organic, where possible, food and cater to special diets such as gluten free, vegetarian, diabetic, etc.
Our specialty is Bavarian Pancake made with locally grown and milled flour and served with local maple syrup and a fresh fruit and yogurt cup. We use fresh roasted free trade coffee and a special Earl Grey tea.
We are near the best beaches and sunsets in the world, take a walk on trails through the Niagara Escarpment a UNESCO World Biosphere reserve, or if you are more energetic, you can hike the Bruce Trail, which runs along the edge of the escarpment and gives spectacular views of Georgian Bay one of the largest fresh water bays in the world. It is so large most people think of it is a separate lake but it is really part of Lake Huron.
If you like waterfalls then we have many that are just a short walk from your car or some that you have to hike to through some very scenic countryside.
If wine is your choice, then it might surprise you that we have a number of excellent wineries in our area, but if beer is more to your taste we also have some excellent craft breweries.
We are located between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in the Famous Great Lakes recreation and tourist area.
Dive or take a glass-bottom boat cruise in the Fathom Five National Park at Tobermory.
Boat cruise to Flower Pot Island where you can tour the lighthouse and hike the island.
Hike to the Grotto in the Bruce Peninsula National Park (this is a beautiful cave).

In the winter we have some of the best snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and ice fishing. We also have dog sledding in the area.
Great place to celebrate special events such as, weddings, family reunions, women's or wellness retreats, special birthdays and anniversaries, etc.
For an excellent family activity, we have the EXPLORE THE BRUCE ADVENTURE PASSPORT that sends you to very interesting places in our area. When you find 7 out of the 12 listed, you will receive a tee shirt. All of this is FREE.

We had a great experience at the doctors house. We stayed in the school house room, and it was very clean and had enough room for my husband, myself and our infant-with all they baby gear we had with us! We really enjoyed the shower and bathroom- it was extra spacious- great for a family. The king bed was soft and silky sheets! We all slept really well!
The reservation was canceled 8 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
We had a great stay at the Doctors House. John and Miriam were excellent hosts who were most welcoming and great to talk with. They gave us plenty of information so that we managed to see all the best bits locally. Not only is the Doctors House very comfortable and the breakfasts really good, It is very well situated for touring the Burce peninsula and the Georgion Bluffs. We're really glad we decided to stay here as part of our holiday in Ontario.
We had the most delightful stay with John and Miriam for three days while we were in town for a family wedding. The king-sized bed in the School House room is by far one of the most comfy beds we've ever slept in, with both of us sleeping in way past our usual times.
I'm gluten free and my husband cannot eat sugar, and Miriam made us the most accommodating and delicious breakfasts every morning,--even a gluten free/sugar free version of her Bavarian pancake. And she shared her recipe with us!
We can't speak highly enough of the warm hospitality we enjoyed at the Dr's House!
Beautiful b&b, idyllic garden, great food and lovely hosts. A perfect getaway.
Our stay at The Dr's House was "just what the dr ordered"! A step back in time, this 1800s house is full of antique charm and is in pristine condition. Each room is carefully themed and decorated accordingly which really adds to the charm. There is a fire pit, hammock and deck to enjoy during warm weather-we had our home cooked breakfast there the first day! The rooms are spotless and the washrooms are stocked with all the basic toiletries plus bottles of water. Exploring the entire house was a real treat, as the details are amazing.
John and Miriam are warm, welcoming, generous and do knowledgable about the area, which has tons to do! We had dinner at a nearby resto, went to a drive-in movie nearby, went horseback riding, hit Sauble Beach, and visited various markets and antique shops.
Our stay was relaxing and envigorating at the same time. The location is so close to so many activities, whatever you are into, you can find it within a 15-20 minute radius from the house. And the people in the town of Tara are so friendly and welcoming. John and Miriam truly go out of their way to make your stay there as enjoyable as possible. I will recommend them and will stay there again! I wish I could buy the house, it's so awesome!
John and Miriam have the goal of creating the atmosphere of home and they have succeeded. I doubt that you will feel more at home anywhere else. They have a variety of interesting and comfortable spaces and Miriam makes wonderful breakfasts from fresh and natural products-talk her into making the strawberry rhubarb yoghurt parfait. And they know the area so well that they can make excellent recommendations for any interest. Warmly welcoming in every way.
