I highly recommend a stay at Knappogue castle in Quin. The setting is breathtaking as you pull in to the long winding driveway up to the castle which is nestled on a rural countryside surrounded by beautiful gardens. My husband and 2 kids stayed here alone, just the 4 of us, and it was an amazing experience. There were so many hidden passages to explore in the medieval tower! We had so much fun. The apartment was huge, much large than it looks in the pictures. We were fortunate to get tickets to the medieval banquet which was wonderful - great food and traditional Irish music, dancing/singing. It was a nigh we will never forget!
Everything about our stay at Knappogue Castle was incredible! Upon our arrival the banquet was ending and Clare suggested a restaurant down the road that was delicious (check out the Abbey Tavern). Our quarters were private from the banquet guests and staff. After the banquet ended we explored the entire castle (beautiful, but also eerie in the dark). The master bedroom and large, nicely decorated sitting rooms made me feel like royalty. It had the feel of an authentic castle with a touch of modern amenities which were greatly appreciated. I would highly recommend staying at the castle.
Knappogue Castle was not only our most memorable experience in our short trip to Ireland but it was possibly the coolest place we have ever stayed at. The living quarters were much grander than what we were expecting. In addition to the majestic master bedroom and the two other bedrooms, there are a couple of huge living areas (one with a grand piano), and a well appointed kitchen with modern appliances but rustic feel. The whole place is decorated immaculately, the furniture is beautiful and comfortable, the ambiance is singularly unique. The views of the castle and grounds are amazing. There is a smaller rose garden next to the castle and a larger walled garden in the back. So much open space to explore around. Perfect for late evening or morning strolls. The medieval banquet at the castle is not to be missed. The performers are very entertaining, musicians are talented and the whole show is very enjoyable. The living quarters are modernized for the comfort of the guests, but we also had a chance to tour the rest of the castle. This is quite an experience, you can feel as if you are in a GoT episode! Everything feels medieval. But more than anything else, the most memorable part of the experience was the people who work at the castle. The entire staff was genuinely kind and friendly and went out of their way to make us comfortable.
I would highly recommend staying here. This was an incredible experience and not many people can say that they have stayed the night in a castle. The accommodations were an apartment on the second level of the castle. This was a huge apartment. There was 5 beds (4 singles and 1 king) and three functioning bathrooms. There was also at least two sitting areas and a full kitchen. The property was located in the Irish country side and was exactly the experience we wanted for our trip. There are a few restaurants about a 10 minute drive away. We visited the Cliffs of Moher during our stay and that was about 45-60 minutes away. We had complete access to the castle during our stay and were able to explore the grounds after hours. This really added to the experience. The grounds are beautiful and there are two gardens to walk around. The hosts provided some breakfast ingredients which was very generous. One thing to note is that there is a musty smell and we did encounter some spiders. However, this is completely expected for a building that has been standing for more than 800 years. Overall, highly recommended.
