The Space

Full private suite with tv, wi-fi, private deck, and private bath. Bathroom includes his and her sinks, separate shower, and jacuzzi tub. Full use of kitchen is also available.

Walking distance to bars, restaurants, art museum, and fairmount park. 15 trolley runs in front of the house and the 48, 7, and 32 bus can be accessed one block away- all provide routes to downtown philadelphia- a 15 minute ride. Safe street parking on quiet, yet busy block.

Guest Access

The entire 3rd floor and Kitchen.

Interaction with Guests

The bulk of my interaction with guests occurs when they arrive. After the initial meeting, I find that guests are generally pretty busy so the interaction decreases quite a bit. However, I am always available and am willing to assist where I can.

The Neighborhood

My neighborhood is vibrant, diverse, accessible, and growing! In the last year we have added two new coffee shops (iMunch and High Point Cafe), a new sandwich shop (RyBrew), and a Taqueria (Shifty's). This is in addition to the diners, Jamaican, Soulfood, and of course the pizza and cheesteak stops. By mid-summer we are expecting a new micro-brewery and "Pizza Brain" restaurant (responsible for the world's first Pizza Museum). The growth is exciting and the people around it are awesome!

Getting around

There are several modes of public transport within 1 block of my house. The 15 trolley (access to Broad St. Subway line); the 48, 7 & 32 buses (access to downtown/center city with 15 minutes).
And, of course, plenty of taxis.

  • Accommodations were some of the best that I've had on Airbnb. Room was clean, linens were fresh, and the bed was very comfortable after a long day of walking.

Phillip was a great host. He responded quickly to any questions and was eager to point out the local coffee shops and restaurants in this funky "up-and-coming" neighborhood, which was my favorite part of the stay. Highpoint Coffee and Shifty's Tacos were two of my favorites. Venture deeper into the neighborhood and you discover corner stores, lively bars, restaurants, and shops.

Walk to anywhere in the city: 5 minutes to Fairmount Park, Boathouse Row, and Waterworks; 20 to Fairmount Ave. Corridor including Eastern Penitentiary; 25 minutes to The Barnes (a must). A bit of a hike to downtown, but you can catch one of several bus lines within a block of the house. Or you can get on the really cool 1940s streamlined trolley that passes in front of the house.

I was not expecting to enjoy Philadelphia, but I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Phillip's, which definitely impacted my now favorable impression on this city.

  • This was my first time using Airbnb and I was very adamant at first but staying at Phillip's changed my mindset and definitely eased my fears. I contacted Phillip a few weeks before and he responded promptly. He also had great reviews which is why my boyfriend and I picked his home. I had emailed Phillip several times with inquiries and he always responded professionally and timely. Since this was my first time using the service he definitely understood my anxiety. We were originally suppose to arrive by 11pm on 5/30 but we arrived earlier and Phillip was able to accommodate us and even said he would leave the key if he was not around. He was available by phone, text or email which was comforting. Once we checked in, he explained how everything went which was thorough. He had the Wi-Fi code already written up for us and laid out towels and washcloths. He asked if we needed anything to feel free to contact him and he would be glad to assist. Phillip was very personable and we even chatted for a good minute and provided history about his neighborhood and the upcoming changes. I would highly recommend Phillip's place to anyone who is looking for a personable and professional host. He stays in the heart of Philadelphia and I would not have had it any other way. Will definitely use his house again!!

  • Phillip was really nice and communicative. Was nice to have the third floor to ourselves and to find a reliable place to stay for our trip to Philly. There were a few downsides, including:
    - Somewhat shady neighborhood, very difficult (almost impossible) to find cabs, so we used Uber
    - The place was kind of dirty
    - LOTS of street noise can be heard in the room from traffic and a trolley line that runs right in front of Girard Avenue

    Response from Phillip:

Although Smita and her husband were great guests, I believe this was not a good match for them. My house will never be confused for a museum as I have three young children. The house is clean but you will notice "kid things" in different areas. The space that guests occupy is void of any of these items and is neatly organized. Less than one week prior to Smita's visit the house was professionally cleaned. The source of the "the place was kind of dirty" comment was based on a single cobweb located in a remote location in the bathroom and a towel that was slightly discolored from bleach. Both problems have easily been eradicated. Catching cabs in Philadelphia, as is the case in most major American cities except for NYC, outside of the immediate downtown area is a challenge. However, a call to any cab company will result in them sending a taxi. Street noise I can do nothing about. I live in an urban area. Street noise is extremely common. Finally, the "shady neighborhood" comment is a bit perplexing. I'm not aware of any instances where Smita, nor any of my previous guests, have been accosted, harassed, etc... In fact, my next door neighbor who has lived on the block for 53 years, offered for Smita and her husband to wait in his home until I arrived to let them in. My neighborhood is gentrifying and lively. I have lived in it for nearly 10 years with my children. My children and I feel safe 100% of the time on our block and in our neighborhood. Smita's comment is possibly based on her own biases and stereotypes and not based on anything factual.

  • The stay at Phillip's beautiful house was perfect. We had the entire third floor to ourselves, plenty of privacy, space and very comfortable room and bath. Thank you for hosting us!

  • Phillip was a very gracious host and we stayed in his lovely home for one night. The High Point Cafe just down the block was a great spot for breakfast in the morning. I recommend using public transportation as finding cabs to hail to take us into downtown from this area proved difficult. But taking taxis from downtown to the house in the evening was fine.

  • Phillip was a great host. Our arrival time was later than we expected and he was great about it. The apartment was very clean and nice and we enjoyed our stay. Also, parking was readily available on the street. We wished we had left it on the street on of the days we were there because parking is extremely expensive in the more touristed areas.

  • Phillip was really kind and helpful and his place was great! Had the whole 3rd floor to ourselves. Bed was comfortable and the place was pretty quiet at night. Bathroom was big and clean. Only snags... one sink was broken and it seemed that some lightbulbs were burnt out/missing, but Phillip was aware and was on top of fixing them. He also suggested restaurants for us to try and was flexible with our check in/out times. Would stay here again!

  • My friend and I had a fine time at Phillips. He was very helpful and communicative every step of the way from booking to our arrival. The house was easy to find, and public transportation was right near his doorstep to all areas of the city. It's a semi-rough neighborhood, at least on appearance, so be careful getting around, but we had no trouble getting a cab to pick us up. I recommend Phillips place if you are visiting and need somewhere you can pop in and out of easily!

  • Philip was a great guy - he was flexible with my delays and late arrival. The room is a nice spot on the third floor with a cool view of downtown Philly and even has its own bathroom and sitting room with a tv. Would definitely stay here again!

  • A lovely new home built by Phillip, filled with hardwood, and the room/upstairs is very comfortable!

Phillip was an excellent host, and I look forward to staying at his place again.

One thing: the neighborhood is a little sketch at night. But you don't have to walk too far to find great food and drink (Rybrew, a great sandwich and beer spot).

I work in education (not a teacher) and graduated from Temple University. I'm a single father of three who enjoys biking, traveling, different cultures, ridiculous comedy, and great food. Really great food! I enjoy meeting different people via airbnb and hearing about their experiences, professions and travels. I'm glad to be a stopover/participant in the travels of those stopping by Philadelphia. And for those that it makes a difference to, I have a friendly cat that will want to say hello to you but will not require too much of your attention. He doesn't shed, at least in the house, so you will not find cat hair on the bed furniture, etc... Most guests find my space to be comfy and private. I'm a utilitarian traveler but will not project that same style on my guests. Feel free to stop in, stretch out and enjoy your stay in Philadelphia- at my place, of course!
