About This Listing
Hello and thank you for looking at our Garden Suite, which is a great addition to the Juniper Zen Palace. Tucked away in our private tropical backyard, the suite is a cozy one bedroom, one bath hideaway. The room includes comfy full bed, mini fridge/freezer, microwave, electric kettle, coffee table, and private bathroom with standing shower. There is no kitchen, just the basics!
You will also have access to the amenities of the backyard which include an outdoor shower for a fun post-beach/park rinse, BBQ, hammock under the tall bamboo, redwood deck, cabana, and many tropical plants and fruits. Feel free to borrow a bike or surfboardand if they're around, and we can probably help arrange for anything else you need to complete your adventure!
The garden suite is in the heart of Historic South Park San Diego, a bohemian walking paradise. Half a block down to Whistle Stop bar, Vagabond restaurant, coffee shops and boutique shopping, a great outdoor burger joint and a wonderful community of neighbors we love. A short bike or cab ride to North Park, Balboa Park or downtown San Diego. Our corner has a major bus route to downtown: the # 2 will cost you $2, and it's about a $15 cab ride to airport/ convention center. There are also 'GO' cars in the neighborhood if you need 'em. Ample street parking, although it does get busy on weekend evenings, we never need to park more than a block away.
If you rent the Garden Suite on its own while we are in town, be aware that we have a charming and fun Boston Terrier named Junebug who has free reign in the backyard (but she won't be allowed in your room!). Also know that when home we use the backyard frequently for dining and hanging out but we love guests and have made friends from all over the globe.
Pets not allowed, sorry. Maximum of two guests allowed in the Garden Suite. Make sure to check out our other listings on the same property, rent out the entire compound for your next family stay or just the garden suite or mobile love den on their own. We look forward to hosting you!
We are fun, easygoing people who aren't all that big on rules, but experience has taught us that we need to be crystal clear about what is and isn't allowed to avoid any misunderstanding or confusion. So here goes!
*We must receive names and ages of all guests before accepting your booking. Only guests who are listed will be allowed to stay. 2 guest maximum in the guest suite. No exceptions!
*No pets allowed, sorry.
*No access to the main house when the Garden Suite is booked on its own.
*No dining or hanging out in the backyard after 10pm.
*No loud music or partying unless we're the ones doing it :)
*No extra or unannounced guests. If you plan to have a visitor you must clear it with us first.
*No access to laundry in the backyard unless you are staying for a week or longer. There is a laundromat a few blocks away if needed.
*If you borrow a bike or surfboard and it gets damaged or stolen you must pay to repair or replace it.
*You must leave the room reasonably clean as you found it.
Although I didn't get to personally meet Helene, she was wonderful to communicate with and extremely helpful in coordinating a last-minute stay. The guest house is located in one of my favorite SD neighborhoods, just a short drive, bike ride, or walk even(!) to fantastic hangouts, cafés, restaurants, and parks. The room was nicely decorated and thankfully had AC, which is a rare treasure in San Diego. I had a wonderful stay at Helene's and would not hesitate to visit again.
Helene was such a sweet heart! We arrived in SD at noon, right during check in. We had an appointment with Sea World so we could not check in during the allocated check in hours... Helene and her husband was so wonderful, they hid the key so we could help our selves in well after hours. The neighborhood had plenty of street parking which was a bonus since we had a few bags to carry. There was a very hip bar down the street, looked like plenty of places to find food with in walking distance. Over all a very nice neighborhood!
The Room was a very cute room, small but just perfect for a few nights with your partner. I just got back from a month long trip business/pleasure trip to Italy and Germany. We stayed at many BNB's and I do have to say, the little things matter a hell of a lot. There were many similarities to our rooms in Europe. Small rooms, but very functional and practical. Small restrooms and showers also. But the one HUGE difference was the showers! Water pressure was fantastic but the single stall showers drain worked flawlessly!!! Perhaps I am emphasizing too much on such a minor thing like the drain, but you try to shower in a shower where the Drain does not drain properly... I had to shower in 3 minutes intervals, then wait for the pool of water to drain before continuing... This happened with more then a few BNB's in Europe... SERIOUSLY!! The only negative thing about this room was the sink, very awkward to use because you only have a few inches of actual usable sink space... Perhaps I have a large head, I had to use it side ways with my cheek pressed up on the mirror otherwise I would spit on my feet!
We finally got to meet Helene on check out day as we were leaving to return her keys. All I have to say is, Helene is as lovely as the lovely room she prepared for our little weekend vacations!
I stayed in the Suite for a week. Helene and her husband were very gracious, helpful hosts. They're super friendly and have a lot of information about places to visit around San Diego. I had a late arrival and very early departure and they were very accommodating. The room is lovely, just as in the pictures. Their place is a little far from downtown without a car but the bus stop is right around the corner. They are very near Balboa Park though, which is really nice. All in all a wonderful experience!
We really enjoyed our stay here. We spent the whole month in garden suite. The suite and location were amazing. You can walk to restaurants, bars, coffee shop. Downtown is a short drive with car, there is also public transport. Very safe (email hidden)e tropical garden is beautiful and relaxing. Helene and Preston were great hosts! They have a lovely doggy June Bug, who was always meeting us near the door :-) Great place to stay!
We rented out the main house and this guest house for 5 days for 6 people and it was perfect. The house was clean, charming and well-appointed and Helene was very accommodating, friendly, and helpful. The South Park neighborhood is full of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping, etc. and is just a quick cab ride from downtown and the airport and is right by Balboa Park. I highly recommend staying here!
My husband and I LOVED our stay at the Juniper Garden Suite! The room was so perfectly decorated and equipped with everything one could think of to be necessary at a home away from home! extra bathroom toiletries, books, DVDs, extra towels and pillows! Their small dog was so pleasant and people friendly! Helene and her husband Preston were so accommodating and warm! We loved their energy! Our stay was a birthday surprise to my husband and when we arrived there was yummy birthday chocolates on our bed! (soooo thoughtful) Their Garden Suite is perfectly located in a friendly neighborhood lined with cute homes, coffee houses, and restaurants. It's also conveniently close to the free way we visited Sea World, Mission Beach, Coronado Island and San Diego Zoo and it took us at most 10-15 minutes to get to each! We are looking forward to our next stay and will definitely be referring other San Diego visitors to this location! All around good! Blessings!

The Juniper Suite was so cozy and wonderful - it's even cuter than in the pictures. Helene was so friendly and inviting and seems to truly enjoy what she does! We also enjoyed the company of Junebug, who has just as much spirit as Helene does. I'd gladly stay here the next time I'm in San Diego!

About the Host, Helene
HI! I am a photographer and my husband is a musician and scientist. Our house is our sanctuary and we love to share it with others for their own little slice of paradise while on vacation or staycation. The Juniper Zen Palace is a 2 bedroom house and serves as our primary residence, although we vacate when the entire home is rented. We have an extra detached guest suite with its own bathroom, fridge, and microwave that is available as well and sleeps 2, or is available with the entire house for an additional charge. Our pride and joy is our Mobile Love Den, a 1958 Dalton canned ham that is fully restored and has gotten rave reviews so be sure to check that out if that sort of thing floats your boat!
We will also rent out our inside guest bedroom by itself sometimes, so email if you are just looking for one room. We have a small dog, June Bug, who is a Boston Terrier. She stays at her friend's house when the entire home is rented. If you intend to rent the suite or spare room, please be warned that she may come in for a morning snuggle and may jump on your luggage when you first arrive.
Our home is a charming early 20th century craftsman that has been nicely restored and is designed in our own eclectic style. If you rent the whole house, you'll have shelves full of LP records, cd's, and great books to keep you company. Also at your disposal are fresh fruit and veggies from the garden, backyard bbq, fire pit, cabana and banquet table with night lights, hammock under the tall bamboo and banana trees, and many more simple but fun delights. We truly do love hosting people and have had great guests from all over the world gracing the pages of our guest book.
