About this listing
Stay in the centre of historic Kinsale and create your very own Irish pub experience. O'Herlihys was established in 1864 and has been in the same family since, this generation wishes to meld the traditional features with contemporary comfort.
The space is ultimately unique! The old public house established in 1864 is where you can dine or dance, the bar is still there (minus the beer taps!), this maintains the authentic ambiance of the Irish pub. Contemporary and retro items collide with the traditional features and the house is fully equipped with all modern conveniences, (a stones throw from the local supermarket too!)
Guests have 3 bedrooms, kitchen, dining space and bar(!). The house also has a comfortable parlour in which guests can relax and watch television or listen to music.
Interaction with Guests
I look forward to meeting and introducing guests to the sights, sounds and tastes of Kinsale, then promptly leaving them to their own devices until we say our goodbyes!
Kinsale is a historic and fiercely picturesque town with a reputation for good food and outdoor pursuits, from golf to sailing to permaculture. The Glen, where O'Herlihys is situated was once a waterway, indeed an old lighthouse was once behind where the house now stands on the 'back Glen'.
You are on the 'flat of the town' (as locals like to say). This means despite the beautiful hilliness and undulating narrow streets of Kinsale you are not out of breath getting back to your bed!
Other Things to Note
The townhouse can sleep 9 at a maximum though ideally no more than 7 adults, smaller beings take less space so children and families are encouraged.
At the times of the year when 3 night minimum bookings are fewer O'Herlihys will operate as a guesthouse doing bed and breakfast. Rates for this may vary. Do contact to find out!
Strictly no smoking (smoking area in the yard of the house).
No additional guests can be facilitated for.
The O'Herlihy's townhouse was perfect for our stay. We were traveling with small children so wanted somewhere with more space. The house is old and has the usual quirks that you would expect. For us that was part of the charm of not going with the standard modern hotel. With 3 bedrooms and two living areas there's plenty of space.
The house itself is located just 2 minutes walk (maybe less) from the center of the town. Don't be fooled by the map, everything in Kinsale is within walking distance. The town itself is very cute and has some of the best restaurants in Ireland. You may want to book on weekends as everywhere is small. There's a SuperValu grocery store near the house that we found very useful to getting initial supplies and daily fresh goods.
Parking was readily averrable at the back of the house, even on the busy weekends.
This is a gorgeous house with lots of character in the centre of Kinsale. We thought it was a great place to stay. There's lots of space and a lovely parlour to relax in. We had family meals in and out, enjoying lots of great Cork food. We brought two babies for the weekend and Sarah provided 2 cots. Everything was covered. A great host.
Already tried to leave a review on fb. We really enjoyed this house. It's proximity to the centre of Kinsale and all its restaurants is a huge plus. That combined with the house's charms (former bar left intact and the lovely comfortable bed rooms (beautifully made up)) all added to our enjoyment of our stay. The owners are very accommodating leaving useful things such as remaining dishwasher and washing machine tabs and providing liquid soap, toilet paper etc. all very useful when you're only there for a week. Would def recommend it. Josephine McCourt
We had a wonderful stay in Sarah's house. It is in a great position and provided us with perfect accommodation for three couples. While the top bedroom is not ensuite, it is a fantastic room with two doubles and the occupants still had their own bathroom, they just had a bit further to go than the rest of us. The whole house suited us perfectly. Made to feel very welcome by Sarah and the considerate thoughts and special touches (like birthday decorations) were the icing on the cake. Would definitely recommend this house.
I came to stay with a large group of friends for a weekend away. Sarah was a tremendous host - she gave us a lot of good advice about things locally. (Including a delicious thai takeaway, Malay Kitchen). She was also very quick to respond, and flexible with our requests. The house itself is full of character but also very comfortable. We loved the parlour upstairs, which was very cosy. Having the bar downstairs complete with authentic bell was a lot fun. All the facilities (wifi, towels, etc.) as as described. The house is extremely central and close to the water. There is no noise on the street, making for a peaceful sleep.
The kitchen is well equipped if you want to cook in, with every manner of pot/pan, glass and dish.
Kinsale is a great a town and Sarah's place made it even better. Thank you Sarah! Everyone loved it.
Amazing place, right in the heart of town, comfortable and huge. Had a great stay and would recommend it to anyone. Great communication from host and everything went according to plan.
About the Host, Sarah
I am the fifth generation of the O'Herlihy family, its still a family affair with my input being the meeting/greeting and coordinating our online bookings while my mom, Elizabeth (4th generation!), is the one who calls the shots(!) (and knows every nook and cranny!). We all love meeting new people and the house has been welcoming new people all it's existence.
I'm a visual artist and an art educator and I love chatting about such things!
