We really enjoyed our stay at Rumah Shanty. The view is astounding -- the property clean and comfortable. But most of us travel to Rumah Shanty to trek the volcano, and for that Sadu is the magic here. Chef, gardner, guide and all-around support, Sadu greeted us with mint tea, then suggested he and the beautiful woman from next door make us dinner. We handed over a small sum for them to purchase fresh fish and potatoes and that, along with organic veggies from the garden provided a delicious dinner. The next morning Sadu and Arca showed up at 4a.m. to lead us on an incredible journey up the volcano. We ate hard boiled eggs and banana sandwiches cooked in the steam vents at the top, then trekked down visiting monkeys and a sacred Hindu meditation cave on the way. This was the most memorable day we had in Bali -- totally made our trip!
Rumah shanty is too amazing a place. Beauty amd serenity is always a good combination. Sadu makes for a mean chef, guide and host in a great package.
The hike was very manageable and private as sadu walked us up an alternative, untouched but gorgeous path through the backwards.
Thank you sadu and dwi and we look forward to sharing your rustic little place with more friends.
I stayed here for one night with my sister in May 2015.
The house is quite simple - one large room that sleeps 5 in 4 beds and includes a kitchen and dining area, along with a bathroom. There is no wifi. The (somewhat unstable) back deck does have an excellent view over the lake.
You probably won't sleep particularly well - there are trucks driving by at all hours of the night and some strange animals living on/in the roof.
But the real reason to stay here is to climb Batur, and for that, this property is excellent. First, the location is such that you can literally start and end your hike at the door. Second, you get access to the amazing Sadu. While Dwi is the official host at Rumah Shanty, in practice Sadu is your host, and an excellent one at that. Sadu has some twenty years of experience in Bali's mountains and we absolutely adored him. He was a blast to talk to on the way up and down the mountain, cooked us food on the mountain and afterwards, escorted us to the nearby hot springs, let us borrow his motorcycle, and more. He was really the perfect person to lead us up and down Batur and I would contact him again in a heartbeat if returning to Bali and looking to do some trekking.
In summary, Rumah Shanty is a good, inexpensive, efficient way to get access to Sadu and climb Batur. But other than that, its quite simple and not very restful, so don't spend more time here than you have to.
Dwi's place absolutely stunned us. Beautifull interior design, very tastefull, harmonious colours and shapes. Great view over the lake, nice to sit on the verandah under the big sun shade. As Dwi could not be there himself, he welcomed us with a friendly letter, tasty fruit and a dinner cooked by Sadu. "Just local fish" he wrote, but it tasted so lovely! The place is extremely convient for trekking up the volcano. Friendly Sadu was our guide the next morning and safely took us to the top of Gunung Batur. With his reassuring help I managed to overcome my fear of heights and the walk along the rim of the crater was no problem at all. We spent three nights at Dwi' place and enjoyed every minute of our stay. For breakfast we found coffee, tea, sugar and a fast water boiler and in the fridge plenty of milk, juice, bread, jam, butter and eggs. There is a fully equipped kitchen, including several spices and rice. The organic garden provides vegetables. Very good house for up to five persons.
The room is very nice and clean, also have a large garden with fresh tomatoes, salad, flowers and lots of vegetable, where we can take vegetable for free and cook ourselves. Moreover, lake view from window is another point make we choose this room. From this view, we can see the sunrise and sunset, Batur mountain and a very large lake. Sadu is a very nice Balian, we can ask him everything about Bali, he also a first aid and well-cooking person, so we feel safety when we have him as a tour guide. Finally, this is a very enjoyable place in Kintanami, we will come back to this place when we have a chance.
However, host is Dwi, he never appear and ask the phone when we call. House's location may very hard to find for a person who first come to Bali, so must be have an available phone for them to call. Sadu is not a host, he may a guy who in charge to take care the house and guess. We like Sadu, but dislike Dwi.
