This rental is called "the Red Barn" for a reason ~ it is a converted barn for the original farmstead. We live in the historic house on the property and have a dog, cat, chickens and two horses on the premises. There are land trust trails through the woods less than 1/4 mile away and the oldest church in town, as well as a historic graveyard, is just a couple of hundred yards down the road.
Bring your bikes or rent locally as Stonington Borough with its shops, restaurants, lighthouse and beach is just 2 miles away. Mystic is also within biking distance (but with a hill) at 3-4 miles and Watch Hill and Misquamicut, RI are a 20 minute drive.
2 1/2 hours from NYC and 1 1/2 hrs from Boston by car. There's a train station in Mystic (Amtrak) and car rental available or taxi cab.
The Connecticut shoreline is beautiful and unique in all seasons with lots to see and do!
Large yard, covered porch and patio. There is a barbecue (charcoal) built into the rock. Plenty of room to wander and sit outdoors.
Interaction with Guests
We generally work days but are home in the later afternoon and evening and, weather permitting, are often outdoors. We're happy to visit with guests; we'll also leave you alone if you prefer.
Great access to Stonington Borough, Mystic, Westerly and the interstate and still quiet and peaceful.
There is absolutely no smoking indoors! That's the big one; otherwise, we expect that our guests will treat our property with respect. Children and one dog or cat are welcome but must be under adult control (seems obvious but you'd be surprised.) There is a strict limit of 6 people, including babies and children ~ extra people must be approved by us before we accept your booking request.
Our family of 6 had a lovely visit. Four kids slept nicely in the loft area and had a blast playing in the large grassy yard after a day at the beach and sight seeing. We were amazed by how tucked away and secluded the home felt while at the same time being short minutes from I-95, Mystic, Stonington and RI beaches. Our hosts were lovely to talk to, helpful and we would definitely recommend it and hope to visit again.
This lovely historic barn turned home was the perfect solution to our extended stay in the Stonington/Mystic area. It's beautiful setting (a horse rescue farm) added to its charm and situated us 2 minutes to the interstate and 5 minutes into Mystic - perfect! We had plenty of room to spread out and host our grown children and grandchildren when a special occasion arose. Our hosts were always quick to respond to any questions or concerns, as well as, giving us the privacy we needed staying on for 4 months. We are grateful for this little red barn!
The Red Barn is one of the most charming and comfortable places I've stayed. My dog and cat and I stayed in the Barn for one month in late fall and loved our time there. My dog Wilson fell in love with Sandra and Jim's dog Kelly; and I'm sure he still misses playing with her. The hosts were friendly and unintrusive during my stay and I had the pleasure of chatting with Sandra often while our dogs were playing. The property and town are beautiful -- quiet with a secluded atmosphere, but everything you need is close and getting onto I-95 to visit Mystic or Providence is easy. The Barn itself was easy to immediately settle into while busy with work and I appreciated that. Everything was clean on arrival and Sandra gave me a quick walkthrough. The kitchen is fantastic! I'll miss cooking on that stove! I stayed alone, but there is plenty of place for a group/family to be just as comfortable. Highly recommend a stay here!
This property is conveniently located near the highway but still very quiet and serene. The house itself is quaint and simple, but not suitable for young children due to the wide railings in the loft. We would certainly visit again!
