Interaction with Guests
We can turn you on to all things on offer from quirky to elegant in this amazing town. We are engaging hosts (as you can see from our reviews on our other listings.) We love to share our discoveries as lovers of great food, music, architecture, archaeology, history and both ancient and modern culture.
You will have all the maps and local suggestions you may need for a magical stay in San Miguel!
We have been managing properties a long time and are very aware of creating comfort for our guests! if we are away, we have a wonderful manager that will check you in and make sure that you have everything you need.
The eStudio is nestled on a hillside in a country-like setting NOT in Centro San Miguel, but very accesible-which is what we love about it! Our safe, quiet no-through fare cobblestone street is located in Monte de Loreto, a new but typical Mexican Colonia which has both Mexican and International residents. We know all our neighbours and are part of "Neighbourhood Watch" Our street sits off a country road aside an old ranching property with panoramic vistas overlooking the mountains and the church steepled spires of the historic center. Besides the city markets, we have a local market on Mondays and Saturdays in the next neighbourhood about 5 blocks away. Every restaurant in town delivers-all for a $3 tip! Pizza and local street food is available nearby and there are also small "tiendas" or stores throughout the neighbourhood, and fresh tortillas and fruit and vegetables are delivered to our door daily. There is a very inexpensive but well equipped gym in walking distance and numerous yoga, dance and Zumba classes close by. At the top of our street there is a biking/walking/running track that leads to the to botanical gardens and water reservoir. There is also a children's playground a few minutes walk away.
Located just 10 minutes north beyond the Fabrica Aurora Art & Design Center, a further 15 minute walk to center of town, central markets and Jardin! That is only one mile/a walkable 25 minutes total trip or 7 minute cab/local bus ride to the Jardin in Centro Historico.
-The local bus stops every 10 minutes at bottom of our street and for 50 cents takes you directly to the modern shopping mall/ supermarkets, "Tianguis" Tuesday market or into town.
-If you do not want to walk the whole distance into town and cabs are safe, plentiful and inexpensive at $3-4 per ride.
-We often walk into town and cab it back if shopping or if it is too hot or at night.
-Cabs will take you to the hotsprings for about $10 and private tours, shuttles and private cars are also readily available.
-Close Fabrica Aurora Art & Design Center and the Guadalupe Arts District-both with great restaurants, regular art openings, organic grocery and interesting shops and galleries.
-We are also well located to both the big central markets-one in Centro, the other San Juan Dios. Both are filled with fresh fruit, meats, fish, vegetables and flowers. (and great taco stands!)
Getting Out of Town
We are minutes from several hot springs, golf courses and horse trail riding and the highway that leads to all the shopping centers and other major towns of interest such as Atotonilco and Dolores Hildago-the talvera pottery center, antique yards, several haciendas, wineries and agarve and organic farms. A car is useful but not necessary except for touring. Cabs will take you to the hotsprings for about $10 and private tours, shuttles and private cars are also readily available.
Other Things to Note
Some houses in San Miguel can be dark, cute but not comfortable, massive in scale, draughty and cold, or are in neighbourhoods that are crowded and constantly noisy. There are benefits of being right in Centro but we offer the serenity of being just outside of the San Miguel yet having access to all the action whenever we want it being a short distance to town. Although we do not have traffic or music or crowded conditions in our area, this is Mexico and fireworks, domestic dogs barking and festival music is part of the culture and therefore part of the soundscape!
As a painter and sculptor we know the local art scene & where the best classes are. The property is close to both the Fabrica Auruoa and Guadalupe Arts District, where there are many art classes held. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you want answered before you arrive or travel options you want to explore.
We want you to make yourself at home, hang out and relax when here. But do be aware of others when entering and exiting the compound. We don't allow pets (sorry!) no smoking inside but on the rooftop only,we recycle, use composting for fruit and vegetable scraps and try to conserve water-a precious resource in Mexico and electricity which is very expensive. We minimize the use of paper in the toilets. We ask our guests to follow our example.
We will do everything to make your stay comfortable. We leave everything for your use and enjoyment. We have a great respect for others homes as we are fellow travellers, house swappers and house sitters ....we expect the same of our guests!
This was my first airbnb experience and I was not disappointed. Cate and Judson were out of the country but we were met at the agreed time by their neighbour Isabelle and by Cate's brother King. They were both great. They showed us how things worked and had bought some groceries so we could have a comfortable breakfast at home the next day before going to centro. King even took us to town with the car the next morning and showed us around. The studio and the roof terrace were very nice. We mainly walked to centro and took taxis back. It was very easy to find taxis in town, and we found them safe and cheap. Buses were also available and came frequently.
This was my first experience on Airbnb and it turned out to be a pretty outstanding one. After having been canceled on six days before my three-week trip to SMA by another Airbnb place, I was pretty panicked. Thankfully, I found the lovely eStudio UNO. Their photos are beautiful, but it’s even more gorgeous in person. From having breakfast on the roof deck accompanied by hummingbirds and a spectacular view, to a comfortable bed with soft linens, a rain shower with good water pressure, and a well-stocked kitchen, plus having drinkable water straight from every faucet, laundry facilities and weekly maid service -- the amenities were excellent! I can’t say enough about how much I loved the apartment: It’s a spacious, well-appointed, modern, artsy and bright studio.
It’s also a great location if you’re an active person who loves walking, which I do. It’s about a mile-and-a-half to the main square where Jardin and Parroquia are located in the middle of Centro, which was about a 30ish-minute walk. There’s some uneven cobblestone and hilly terrain for parts of it, so comfortable shoes are a must, and I was able to go for runs, carefully, around eStudio. Cabs are plentiful in Centro to get back at night (I wouldn’t advise walking back alone at night. I tried once, but it’s isolated and a bit dark). The apartment is also near Via Organico market, which I loved for its fresh produce and other organic, locally sourced items (try the local organic wine, it’s pretty tasty).
While I unfortunately didn’t get to meet Kate and Judson as they were in Australia, they were responsive when I had questions (from where to run to where to purchase rugs) and when there were some issues with wi-fi (a necessity for me since I work as a freelance writer and had to file stories) and the propane heater, they were quick to respond and remedy. Kate’s brother, King, was a friendly host. He waited up when my plane was delayed to check me in, and also checked in to see how I was doing (as a female traveling alone, that was reassuring). He thoughtfully provided bread, butter, jam and coffee for when I arrived and he was also nice enough to drive me to Tianguis El Martes and Mega. Bonus that Kate and King are fellow Chicagoans!
My only regret was I didn’t reserve for a full month when I negotiated to stay three weeks for the cost of their lower monthly winter rate, which was appreciated because the original place I booked was quite a bit less and it helped my budget. It ended up that I could’ve extended my stay for an extra couple days (which would’ve still been short of a month) because of a work change, but I was told I’d be charged for more nights despite me having paid the monthly rate if I wanted to extend my stay since we didn’t agree upon those dates initially. Lesson learned!
My husband and I spent two wonderful weeks at estudiouno. If we could give it more than five stars, we would. The space is beautifully designed - in both form and function. Comfortable bed and furnishings. Very nice shower. Good Internet connection. Everything we needed to cook and eat-in when we wanted to. Great roof deck with very beautiful views.
We would usually walk into Centro and take a cab back in the evening. (Taxis are plentiful, drivers are nice, fares = $3 to $4.)
This is more than just another “place to stay.” Cate and Judson are talented artists and it shows in the details. Their commitment to creating a comfortable environment extends far beyond the structural. They went out of their way to welcome us, continually made sure we were comfortable and provided information to help us find our way in SMA. And knowing that we were searching for a long-term house rental, they reached out to neighbors and friends, to help us find a place.
If you are looking for quality space … and quality people … this is the place.
My girlfriend and I stayed at Cate and Judson's place, and it was awesome! They are really nice and easy to talk people, they make you feel at home and give you very good tips to move around. Definitely, the BEST place to stay in San Miguel de Allende if you are planning to relax and have some fun too.
The eStudio is really beyond the standards, I wasn't expecting such a nice place; the view, the shower, the bed, the decoration, they even have a garden where they harvest mint, tomatoes, basil, among other things, everything is so beautiful. Oh, and the decoration is made by themselves! Actually, Judson was very kind for sharing some of his knowledge on wood, I'm very thankful for that.
The best thing in staying in here was not only the place, but that we met two great persons that are willing to share their home and experiences with you. I hope to stay here again in the future.
What I would like to say is that if you want to go to San Miguel de Allende and live a truly and completely experience there...STAY HERE! Cat & Judson not just have a great place and they are great hosts they take care of you and since the first "hello" you feel like you meet them since long time ago.
They give you a lot of information about San Miguel, all the places where you can eat, telling you all about them and what you could ask, also they had already a couple of eggs, bread and coffee in case you are tired and don't want to go outside the first day.
The place is better than pictures, the roof, the studio, all have a great details, it's pretty close to downtown like 15 minutes walking which I recommend because you can enjoy the beauty of the city.
I really enjoyed my stay here more than any other fancy hotel or host...to be honest it's a MOST!
We loved to be at the studio 2. Kate & Judson are wonderfull hosts and great artists. The place is quiet nice and really close from the center.
I have been coming to Mexico for 15 years, and hands down this is one of my favorite places that I have stayed in. It is spotlessly clean, absolutely beautiful, and Cate and Judson were phenomenal hosts! The building is close enough to downtown San Miguel, but also far enough away (only a short 15-20 min. walk) to appreciate the natural beauty and the giant nopal cacti surrounding the area! Cate and Judson also allowed us to pick some of their fresh garden herbs (basil, rosemary, parsley, and more) for our salads, and the view from the rooftop terrace (where we had dinner) was absolutely stunning! I cannot recommend more highly. The place is wonderful and the hosts made it even more so! I am already planning my next trip back... Thanks Cate and Judson.

We are both full time practising artists, Judson, a New Zealand born sculptor and master carver and Cate a USA born painter (and also life coach). We have created amazing homes in both Mexico and Australia that are filled with our paintings and sculptures along with surprising artworks of other international artists and many treasures from both our travels and from nature. We have both managed B & B properties as one of our many lifestyle incarnations and take pleasure in making travellers welcome and comfortable. We enjoy sharing our passions of art, history, culture, music, great food and of course traveling, with others!
We ended up living in Mexico after going on a year trip through South America and across the USA visiting the national parks.Looking for a place to stop and do some artwork, we went to San Miguel de Allende and felt so at home in this amazing colonial jewel. We are currently exhibiting our sculptures and paintings in Mexico, California and Chicago.
We also are enjoying sharing our skills and passion of art making with others. Recently we have opened our home studios both in Mexico and Australia up to both experienced and beginner painters and sculptors who want to have some fun and receive qualified, professional one on one art instruction. Feel free to ask us more about it!
Adventurers at heart, we have soaking up as much of beautiful Mexico when we are there doing trips to various archeological sites and many colonial towns along the way! People often ask us where is home-and we reply that home is in our hearts because we have them with us wherever we go!
Come visit! Happy Travels!
