The Space

Historic Sugar Hill duplex apartment; private entrance with your own full bathroom and kitchen access. I am also fully Landlady Approved!

Next door to the A/B/C/D express subway station (no noise, it's deep underground.) Walk ten feet and zip downtown:

-One stop (10 minutes) to Columbia-Presbyterian or Yankee Stadium
-Two stops (12 minutes) to Central Park/Lincoln Center/Columbus Circle.
-Three stops to Times Square.
-Four stops to Penn Station/Empire State Building.
-Five stops to Greenwich Village.
-Six stops to West Village
-Seven stops Chinatown/Soho.
-Eight stops (32 minutes) to Financial District/WTC/Statue of Liberty Ferry

All of these, you step out in the middle of the action.

This is a large, old-but-lovely apartment in a landmarked building on Sugar Hill. It has everything you need to enjoy your visit. I mop and vacuum and wash all linens and dust before each visitor, but please note that the place is OLD and there are stains on the floor that I cannot fix. Nevertheless, it is clean, and if there is anything I can do to make your stay more comfortable, I live upstairs (where if you have need you also have access), and I am almost always around. I truly want you to enjoy your visit.

---Large foyer suitable for all your luggage.
---Complete bathroom with bathtub.
---Complete kitchen including refrigerator, stove, pots, pans, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster.
---Tables and chairs to eat in.
---Huge living room with shared computer, full sized bed, and space for an air mattress on the floor (included.)
---DEDICATED WIFI/internet. (Note, no TV, other than Hulu, etc.)
---Big bedroom with full sized bed, plus room on the floor for another person on ANOTHER included air mattress, if needed.
---All towels and bedding are included.
---One floor walk up.

*The apartment is full of windows and is kept as clean as a very old building can be. There are no pests and no animals resident.
*C'mon, you guys... ONLY a 4.5 star location?! ;) The conversations I've had just hanging out on my stoop are some of my greatest New York City experiences, and you will be welcomed to the same. There are also some wonderful restaurants and pubs nearby, and much cheaper than downtown. I've lived here for over a year and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
*That said, don't be surprised if you see some scruffy characters--they sometimes help me carry my laundry bags across the street. :) There is also a police station in the subway station next-door, for an extra sense of security.
*Street parking is free and easier to find than in other parts of Manhattan. You do have to move on certain days for the street sweeper, and there is an $18/night parking garage nearby if you'd prefer to park indoors or you really can't find parking for some reason.

Also, New York City can be overwhelming. If you're looking for suggestions on how to make the best use of your time/budget, just ask! I have a whole write-up I'd be more than happy to send you.

  • Christy is a great host. We are a family of four and the place is perfect to accommodate us. Subway is right at the corner and it is really convent to get around.

  • Our family stayed in an apartment in Harlem hosted by Christy M. while vacationing in New York. The apartment was clean and had all the amenities that we needed, including air condition, WIFI, a computer, and kitchen necessities. Christy was always available to answer any questions we had, morning or evening. Christy was friendly, flexible, and extremely helpful. The apartment was conveniently located near a laundromat, grocery store, the subway, and tasty local eateries. Everyone in the neighborhood was friendly. We felt very safe and comfortable. Christy was able to accommodate us with an early check in and late check out which helped tremendously. She had a map inside with local restaurant recommendations, car service, and city maps. We had an excellent experience and recommend Christy as an exceptional host.

  • Christy was very nice and accommodating and we enjoyed the little hole-in-the-wall restaurants of the area. The subway stop next door was very convenient, especially for late-night returns when we were exhausted. It was also nice to escape the crowds in Midtown. We went to Hamilton Grange and had it to ourselves -- a definite change of pace!

  • The apartment was cleaned on time and Christy made it really easy for us to get the keys and gave us a quick walk through of the place. Christy has everything that we needed, including an iron, hair dryer and air-conditioning. The apartment is really clean as well. Really convenient location as the entrance to the Metro is right next to the building! We had a great time and it is really really convenient!

  • We had pleasant stay at Christy´s. She was very nice giving us good advice about NY. The flat is very close to the Metro which make it very easy to go anywhere in NY. The flat was suitable for the 4 of us and was very good value for the money. We can only recommend the flat and Christy.

  • This was my first time using Airbnb and Christy was a fantastic "landlady." Very quick to respond and helpful with making the reservation. We were even able to add a night at the front end of our time there as a last minute change occurred in our travel plans. Christy was in the middle of finals, so we only saw her once at check in. The location is quite good. Neighborhood when we first pulled up felt somewhat iffy - homeless guy on front stoop, area a bit rundown - but we quickly learned to embrace this as a true NY experience. Never felt unsafe. One unfortunate thing was the train we needed to take to get north from any place lower on Manhattan wasn't running after 10PM during our stay.
The apartment itself is very eclectic. As I said, I'm not familiar with Airbnb but it seemed there were quite a few personal items around - family photos, coats hanging in closets, unused items. Maybe this is just the way it is, like being a guest in someone else's place. That's fine but there are several negatives to this rental.
The bathroom is very subpar. Some extensive cleaning would help a lot. There is mold on the window shade, no caulk around the bathtub (where does all that water go?), mold or dust up above the toilet. The bathroom just felt extremely dirty to me. There was no soap (some leftover shower gels) and no wash cloths. The kitchen also could use a deep cleaning but I wasn't in there much. I realize this is an old walkup but I live in a hundred year old home and cleaning thoroughly is necessary. I also think by just doing this and putting up a shower curtain, new tiles, just investing some money in the place, it would be leagues better. I doubt if this is something Christy does, but her landlady should!
We are an older couple so are probably a bit more picky than the average younger renter. I will say we slept soundly, there were no noisy neighbors to keep us up, there were absolutely no bugs or animals, and everyone around the neighborhood was very friendly. And we enjoyed using the money we saved by renting here as opposed to someplace lower in Manhattan on some fun NYC things we hadn't done before. Also, we were really only there to sleep and get ready in the morning. All in all, a NYC experience.

    Response from Christy:

I'm very sorry to hear about the bathroom! I live right upstairs and if I'd known that the shower curtain needed changing (I don't always get enough information from the cleaning crew) I would have run down and changed it immediately. Thank you for letting me know about the things I am able to fix. It's a real help to me to be able to do what I can for the next guests.

  • My experience was really great. Christie is a sweetheart, the place was clean and a good size. Wifi was included. And the subway is literally next door which was incredibly convenient. Definitely would stay again.

  • Our family had a good time staying at Christy's place. The place is clean and the bed is comfortable. It's a convenient base to explore NYC since the subway station is just right next door! Christy was very helpful and welcoming. She is easy to communicate and extremely flexible with our check in and check out time. Thanks again! =)

  • Wonderful !!! Our family of 5 stayed in Christy's apartment and found it an excellent base for discovering Manhattan. The convenience of the A & D express subway lines was great. Its a very convenient location - easy to get everywhere, but felt like we were coming home to a real neighbourhood each evening.
The apartment is roomy, had everything we needed plus lots of nice touchs - great books which unfortunately we didn't get a chance to browse through, issueless wifi, kitchen supplies (Thanks for the peanut butter & fresh bread waiting when we arrived!!!) .
Christy's communications and help in advance overflowed in welcoming us. I have no hesitation in recommending this place to others and would love to stay here again.

I'm a New Yorker going on six years now, and I love my city and my neighborhood! I'm originally from Northern California, which means most people find me laid back and go-with-the-flow. Because I use AirBnB as a traveler, it's very important to me to make sure you feel like you've received a good deal for the money spent. I've traveled all over North America, Central America, Australia, and South East Asia, mostly on my own, so I know and respect the difficulties of traveling on a budget, especially as a woman. If you're staying at my place, I'll do everything I can to make sure you feel safe and comfortable. If I'm staying at yours, you can bet I'll leave it in as good shape as I found it, or better. I appreciate the AirBnB community!
