About Ilha Grande:
It is one of the most pristine remnants of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest, one of the richest ecosystems in the world, and a hotspot for biodiversity and conservation. It holds some of the largest remaining populations of many endangered species, including the red-ruffed fruitcrow, the brown howler monkey, the maned sloth the red-browed Amazon parrot, and the broad-snouted caiman. The seas around the island, which are also protected, feature a unique convergence of tropical, subtropical, and temperate-zone marine life, and may be the only waters in the world where it is possible to see corals and tropical fish along with Magellanic penguins and Southern right whales.
Great Place. Great People. Great Outdoor Shower. I really enjoyed it there.
Make sure to take the Honeymoon-Bungalow.
First of all, this place is incredible! Beautiful view over the bay, relaxing hammocks, an outside shower... We had a really nice time with Dinho in the Lodge. Thanks for the wonderful evenigs with cooking, chilling explaining the jungle and watching the stars!
Dinho, you made it a great adventure!
But there are also a few things to mention:
There is no internet in the lodge (or there was no internet when we were there), so be prepared to go down to the town to find a wifi spot.
The pictures are a little nicer than reality. Everywhere a little chaos... we didn't mind but be prepared.
About Heike, he's really nice. They prepared food for me taking into account that I'm vegetarian.
About the Lodge, the story is s little different. If you're looking for a quiet place in the middle of the jungle for sure you'll find it there. But, know that the pictures are not 100% as it really is, that the showers are cold and the place is not really clean (mattress and pillows were dirty)
Unfortunately, it was raining and really cold during my stay at the Lodge so maybe it looks a little less nice than what it can be.
It's a good experience that I recommend but if you're staying a week or more it's maybe a good idea to look for a pussada in the village for at least half of your stay.
The place is really incredible. Dinho is the best person one would wish for to host you in the middle of the jungle.
The best experience I had in Ilha Grande.
"A little pain for a lot of pleasure"
Be prepare to walk... pack light or do what we did an leave our bags in the Rio airport (cost $5US per day) and take a smaller one...
why you would come here - becasue you want to stay with a super awesome host, you want to get away from 1000s of back packers and you want to stay in nature....
If that is what you want go here... you wake up in the morning to the sounds of nature... whcih i love...
We stayed in Jungle Lodge for one week, and we loved it! The owner Dinho and his cousin Lygia are lovely people and took care of us like a family. The place is really special, it is located in the middle of the woods, and offers an amazing view on the coast line and the sea. Even, you can take a shower outside whilst enjoying the great landscape! Furthermore, there is a spring proprietary of the lot that offers clear drinking water. No doubt, it needs to be mentioned that the Jungle Lodge is a simple house offering little civil comfort like hot showers, big beds, air condition, and that the rain forest with everything and all its creature is surrounding you. It's really IN the jungle! The way up (about 20 minutes from Abbrao, not adequate for wheeled suitcases) can be exhausting, especially when the floor is muddy and slippery. But for those who appreciate to spend time right in the nature, this place is a treasure and you will make very precious experiences!
We left after the first night. The photos shown in this listing are from 7 to 8 years ago. Heike is not the host and the family as shown in the picture does not live there anymore. Nontheless she writes her emails as if she was there. The open chalet was dirty with a very old matress on the floor. The mosquito net had a couple of big holes so we were "ate alive". There was no light because of the non-existent or broken lightbulbs. The toilet had one working bulb but all the mosquito nets of the windows were broken too. The shower had no hot water and the energy connection was scary with loose cables almost touching your head. One thing is to be in a simple place and in the middle of the jungle but another thing is when a place is dirty and there is trash all around the place. The people are very nice but the place is definitely not what was advertised in this listing. We were told that local people would help to get your suitcase up the path (the walk is 25 min not 15 as other mention) but no one would want to do it and when we found someone it was 50RS per suitcase not 25RS as we had been told. When we were leaving Dinho made fun of us for not knowing "how to be in the jungle" and we have been in other places in the jungle before. Photos here: (website hidden).
Soledad came to our house and she didn´t like the place. Everybody is free to dislike a place, I have no problem with this and she only payed the night she stayed there nothing more, even she had booked 14 nights. So fare no problem for me, what I really didn´t like was, that she after published that the pictuers from my house are 8 years old, what is just not true, the house she stayed was built 4 years ago ! Also she thout that´s nessesery to coment my personal situation. We have a family photo on our website and our family doesn´t life tougether in this time, I think this must not be her problem, because I told her before she arrived, that I will not be there. In all, for me she is a verry dislike person.
Really cool place in the middle of the jungle - if you are looking for a different experience away from the tourist trail then this is for you- as long as you are prepared for a 20 min uphill jungle hike, some parts extremely steep - until you are drenched in sweat.
Please note not suitable for suitcases! You will need to pay a porter to bring your stuff up.
The host is super friendly and helpful in equal amounts to his craziness.
Bring bug spray!
The view up there is beautiful and you are surrounded by tropical birds and nature - having breakfast while taking it all in was amazing.
Ilha Grande ist awesome. I enjoyed my time and had a lot fun. Dinho organized a boat trip around the island for all guests. we saw some nice lagoons, beaches, fishes and a few turtles.
The beach Lopes Mendes is great.
Great location, middle in the forest. Dinho, the host is a great guy. MInor setback is the 15 min. clime back up after your night out in the main town, Abraao. He has 1 wonderful room: an outdoors cabin!
In general, a definit plus!
