Ideal for first and last night stays for your vacation in Costa Rica. It would be a perfect start for your honeymoon or vacation great for families or groups of friends up-to 12 people, although we have had groups of over 20 by being creative with the sleeping arrangements. There are five bedrooms including an exuberant honeymoon suite and there are two living areas on different levels, both with interesting bronze chimney stack features with gas fireplaces. The kitchen in the heart of the house also enjoys the impressive views and is surrounded by landscaped gardens. This combination creates a great atmosphere, and a unique style which many have likened to a 70s James Bond style house, so it is an ideal place to recover from your flight and relax with plenty of space. We have a a music center and speakers throughout the house, where you can choose your own music.
We have an area which can be converted into a private cinema as we have a projector and giant 150" screen, excellent for watching films or sporting events. This area could also be used as a dancing area or even to put on a show.
The cozy honeymoon suite is one of the best rooms in the house and is perfect as a romantic, sensual getaway with the stone walls and clever subtle lighting, with its own brick fireplace, and has a large modern bathroom. The other rooms are average sized, normal bedrooms with basic decoration and access to basic bathroom facilities, the bedrooms are not the main feature of the house. The open-plan design and different levels make it ideal for parties and for groups to socialise.
There is a large terrace and balcony with exuberant gardens to enjoy during the day or in the evening, enjoy hanging out and eating and drinking outside, whilst watching the rest of the San Jose Central Valley down below. We also have the relaxing company of Luna, a beautiful affectionate Harlequin Great Dane who lives at the house and welcomes all new guests.
We are about 20 minutes from the International Airport, if traffic is light and easy access to shops or bars and restaurants in Escazu and about 15 minutes from the center of San Jose. We can provide transport, a laundry service and advice about tours and activities in Cost Rica, including nightlife options. There is private parking available for 7 or 8 cars.
We are currently continuing with improvements to the property and minor details outstanding which does not effect guests in any way, so we are offering very attractive prices for the moment.
We offer dinner and breakfast, local family style cuisine at reasonable prices by prior arrangement.
Breakfast $7 pp
Dinner from $15 to $20 depending on the menu.
Actually they are not house rules but small reminders, the same as in your home. Turning off the lights and locking up before going to sleep. For your security and maintenance of the house, there is a permanent member of staff in an outside garden room.
After leaving Boston with over 3 feet of snow on the ground we arrived in San Jose at night on my birthday Feb. 8th. Jeffrey, Jonathan's driver whisked us away and carried us up to the James Bond House.
With nearly 180 degree floor to ceiling windows we saw the dazzling city lights of San Jose stretching as far as the eye can see from one end of the valley to the other.
The house was both an exotic and regal space that also was very comfortable and welcoming. Our spacious and elegant bedroom lay privately at one corner of the house. There was plenty of storage for our belongings and the bed was super cozy.
We really enjoyed meeting Adam who gave us a tour of the garden and shared stories with us about growing up in Costa Rica. Wayne also shared a lot of knowledge about Wifi uses and a way to check email on a smart phone set to airplane mode while visiting Costa Rica.
We had some great conversations with Jonathan who has lived in Costa Rica for a long time and has a great love of the country.
He had a few other volunteers around who made our stay both informative and enjoyable.
We did yoga in the morning near the garden and chanted to the sunshine.
We also stayed one additional night on our return trip from the jungle. Carlos picked us up from the airport and took us to the Auto Mercado, a whole foods like supermarket not far from the house.
We easily could have stayed longer. It is a great way to begin and end our trip.
We hope to return again and even visit Jonathan's other retreat houses someday.
We highly recommend a visit if you are in the area!!
We loved staying at Jonathan's Mountain House! He had a taxi driver waiting for us at the airport (with a 007 sign!) and welcomed us with tea when we arrived. We were treated to wonderful meals cooked by Alif and she made sure I had plenty to eat despite my lengthy list of food intolerances. Allen took us hiking for the day with a bunch of his college friends - we hiked to a wonderful waterfall and were able to have a non-touristy day, which is exactly what we wanted.
The house was as promised, the food was great, we were made to feel very welcome. And were very happy to be able to spend some time with Jonathan's dog Luna.
Jonathan was very accommodating in helping us plan for our trip. We would definitely stay there again.
Leaving the glitzy chain restaurants and strip malls of Escazu behind, we gripped our GPS tightly in hand and began the twisty ascent to Bello Horizonte. Between the helpful bread crumb trail of 007 signs leading up the hills and Jonathan's extremely thorough directions we arrived at his brilliant idyll home in no time.
A veteran host, Jonathan made us feel easily at home and set us up with a local driver for excursions into SJ. The home and gardens are beyond description, a casual opulence looking over the city - you have to stand in the space to fully appreciate it. Which you should do. Our only regrets were not having more time to enjoy it.
Thanks again Jonathan, would definitely recommend this for a little peace outside of the city.
We started our trip here and finished here too. It was great to see Jonathan again and tell him about all the things we've seen. It felt like returning to a friends house, very familiar. We can totally recommend choosing the same place for the first&last night! And the house was as beautiful as the first day :)
Jonathan was awesome, he returns emails super fast and arranged our shuttles from the airport. His home is amazing, the picture don't do the view justice, the view is AMAZING. Jonathan cooked us dinner and breakfast both were great. Jonathan has the sweetest dog name Luna too. Staying with Jonathan was a great way to start our Costa Rica trip.
The house was every bit as awesome as advertised. It was nice to feel removed from the bustle of the city while still being close enough for excursions. Everyone on the property was extremely friendly and accommodating (especially Luna the gentle giant).
Very unique home and quite a fun hunt to find the place! Spectacular views!

I left England when was 18 and hitch-hiked through Europe,Africa to India overland which was a life forming experience,. I left with about $100 and returned 2 yrs later ..I had little money I stayed with local people ,or hostels or slept rough whatever I needed to do. Later as a professional investment consultant I have lived in Hotels throughout Latin America for nearly 20 years. I can tell you the best way to travel is not always in Hotels ...experience living and sharing with the local way of life ,with real people it is a far richer more rewarding experience. I believe in the concept of integrated tourism this is what we offer it is a much better way to travel ...
