We call our Maine home Hale Ohana - Hawaiian for Family House. Whether you are having a family get together or just want to come for some relaxation and peace, this is the place! Our home is set on 2 wooded acres and a gorgeous small pond. It is a 4-season home with 4-season activities: From Spring to Autumn. you can hike, canoe, kayak (sorry, no motor boats or jet skies allowed on this pond), fish, swim and enjoy the fresh Maine air. The pond is a well known local haven for fishing. In the winter, you can go downhill skiing at a nearby Shawnee Peak ski resort, x-country ski on our land and pond, snowshoeing, sledding, hiking and just enjoy being outdoors! We are located between the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Lakes Region of Maine. There is SO MUCH to do in this area! Bridgton, Maine is a quaint village with great shops, restaurants and a state-of-the-art movie theater. We are also close to North Conway, New Hampshire, which has so many activities and outlet malls. Portland, Maine is less than an hour away, with all the cultural events, seaside activities, fine dining and even more shopping!
Hale O'Hana is a modern facility with all the comforts you could want and close enough to all the ruggedness that Maine has to offer. Right off of 302 in Bridgton and located minutes from pubs, skiing, and right on Beaver Pond there is no lack of activity. We had a big group of friends and we were comfortable in a large living room, big kitchen, and warm rooms. We spent our entire Saturday ice fishing and making memories down on Beaver Pond and came back to a warm house with plenty of space to cook a big dinner and play some games. The property is easily accessible (though the roads are pretty icy in the winter) and cleans up easily. Hats off to Bill and Carol for a top notch pad - we hope to return again soon.
We had a truly wonderful 12 days at Carol and Bill's lovely house. We travelled from Australia hoping for a white Christmas and Maine delivered!
The house is in a beautiful spot surrounded by trees with pond behind, a true winter wonderland. Inside was perfect, plenty of space for the 5 of us and cosy and warm to come home to. Carol and Bill put up a Christmas tree and festive decorations, and drove to meet us when we arrived. We couldn't have asked for better hosts.
There is plenty to do in the area. We took advantage of the sleds and had fun sledding near the house, Shawnee Peak is a few minutes up the road for snow boarding and skiing. Two of our sons did the learn to board package and had a great instructor. Carol recommended tubing which was awesome - especially going down together!! We shopped till we dropped at Conway outlets and Bridgton itself is a delightful small town with great cinema, bookshop, antique shops and cafe. Our highlight, apart from the house of course, was dog sledding with Mornington Crescent Sled Dogs.
Maine far exceeded our hopes and expectations for our family Christmas holiday and a huge part of that was the accommodation.
It was perfect to come home to after active days and to just unwind and relax in beautiful surroundings. Nearly forgot to mention the neighbours, although we didn't actually meet them it was good to know they were there if we needed them - thanks!
So thank you Bill and Carol, we hope we can return your wonderful hospitality one day and perhaps return to your lovely place - I bet it's fun in summer!
Great location for exploring the Maine Lakes Region. House was excellent for our party of 6 adults - warm, roomy, well set up and very peaceful. It was a bit too cool for water-based activity during our short Fall stay, but we could see how that would feature on a longer, more summary holiday. Loved the drive up from Portland, and especially Bridgton and Naples (we have relatives at Little Sebago). All Carol and Bill's local recommendations lived up to our expectations - including the Campfire Grill (two visits). The tax-free (NH) outlet malls 30 minutes away across the state border were a bonus for the NZ and UK-based shoppers in our party. Altogether a great way to experience this part of New England - either as a short (3-nights in our case) sampler, or for a longer, more outdoorsy stay. Thanks Carol and Bill!
We loved Bill and Carol's place - a house on the water (a pond that feels more like a lake) with a deck and canoes. We could sit out and read on the porch during the day, take a canoe trip at twilight, BBQ dinner and sit by the fire pit at night. Their house has plenty of room for a family with a well-stocked board game cupboard, a DVD (and VHS!) library and an extremely well-stocked kitchen / fridge. Communication was easy, and we had zero problems with the house. I would stay there again and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet getaway that's still close enough to civilization (a nearby town with a big grocery store, book store, restaurants and antique stores, and two movie options - a small multiplex/pub and a drive-in).
The house was absolutely perfect, and Carol and Bill went above and beyond to make our stay so easy! The kitchen was well equipped with all the cooking utensils we needed and even had condiments! The house was large and airy, with lots of seating both inside and on the porches. Everything was very clean and there were LOTS of extra blankets/pillows/toiletries to make sure we were comfortable. They also provided three canoes which we took out every day – the lake was so peaceful and it was GREAT having the private dock :)
They also left great information about hiking, eating, and shopping in the area. We took the Mt Sabattus hike they recommended, and it was gorgeous! Nice to hike off the marshmallows I ate at their fire pit every night of my stay – for which they had left us LOTS of dry wood.
Overall we couldn't have asked for a better vacation, I wouldn't change a single thing!
Carol and Bill's pond house is amazing! I went with my husband, mom, sister and puppy for 10 days in July and I think these were one of our best vacations ever!
The house is very homie, the kitchen is fully packed and friendly. The pond, OMG the pond! This place has the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The pond is very clear, and great for swimming. We also explore with the canoes and saw a baby dear! s home!
Bill and Carol have a beautiful home on a lovely pond. The kitchen was well stocked, and the house was clean and comfortable. There were also plenty of good books, movies, and games. The pond was great for swimming, canoeing, and fishing. We also enjoyed going into nearby Bridgton, which has several nice shops, cafes, and a movie theater.
It took a lot of searching to find the perfect house for our summer vacation and this was it! We really appreciate having such a clean, well taken care of house that welcomes the family pet. Our dog was in heaven swimming and chilling on the porch. The location of the house is great, down a quiet street on a pond with no motor boats. We loved hanging on the dock during the day and going for swims to the raft and taking the canoes out for rows. We even rented a paddleboard from the shop in town which was great on this peaceful pond.
The outdoor space is awesome, 1 huge deck to lounge on and another that is screened and perfect for dinners and games. Inside there was plenty of space for our group and a nice modern, clean kitchen. The upstairs bedrooms were all great and it was a pleasure waking up to loon calls each morning.
The Bridgton area has something for everyone; hiking, gorgeous lakes, towns to browse, and we even hit the local Blues Festival. Just an hour away is Mt Washington which is a must see, we chose to take the cog train up and it's something I will never forget.
Thanks for the great house that allowed our family to spend a week together. Hope to be back.
This is a great house super close to the skiing at Shawnee Peak. I may have to check it out again in the summer.
Carol's house was so beautiful and in such a lovely spot! The house was cozy and clean and Carol thought of everything from fresh towels, to board games, to firewood, and movies!
It was particularly kind that she arrived before we got there to plow her snowy Maine driveway and shovel the steps. We SO enjoyed our stay and will definitely pass on her good review to others!
