The Space

Quaint affordable apartments... Casa Camaleon is the perfect location for a couple or even a family traveling together. The location is quiet and steps from the beach and famous surf break "Playa Grande". Our private and fenced property, in the gated community of Palm Beach Estate, is nestled amongst huge teak trees where you will find the apartments to be the ideal distance to town and beaches. We are away from the bustle but only a short walk to all things busy when you need it. Our newly renovated apartments are fully equipped with kitchens, private bathrooms with hot water, split a/c units, overhead ceiling fans, private porches with dining tables for meals outside. Free wireless internet. Outdoor rain shower. Surfboard and bicycle rentals available onsite.

We also have a local fish truck, organic fruit and veggie truck and German bakery truck that all come by on separate days during the week. Their stuff is fresh and always good. We also have a mini super just a short walk from Camaleon. It has what you need to stock your kitchen. If you want to go to Tamarindo for shopping etc. there is a water ferry which you can catch from the beach where you surf within a 6-8 minute walk from Camaleon, for about a dollar a person and you get dropped right in Tamarindo.
Concierge assistance from the owners who live next door. Its price is right and its got everything you need! You will love it, feel at home and never want to leave!

  • Perfect place to go get away from it all. Sharr was really nice and helped us with everything we needed. If your looking for a quite place to relax some nice waves with all the amenities this is the place to be.

  • We had a great time at Casa Camaleon. My girlfriend and I had a six-night stay a few weeks ago, and we got exactly what we were looking for..a nice place, well maintained, relatively secluded, nothing fancy or extravagant but with everything you would need to have a relaxing stay in Playa Grande.

Sharr was not present, but Doug was great. He greeted us the first night we showed up, even though it was rather late. He was around frequently and had good advice about the beaches, the town, the surrounding area, the weather, pretty much anything we had a question about.

It is very easy to access the beach from the apartment, as it is just a five minute walk down a dirt road to the public entrance. It is a less-busy portion of the beach as well, removed from the main break area. Not that it is crowded in general, but a bit more tranquil.

We were upgraded to a two-bedroom apartment, though we didn't really need the second; appreciated nonetheless! Would be great for a couple with two kids. The kitchen was nice and well-stocked with cooking equipment; there was also a baby Weber grill on the patio that we made good use of. The A/C kept us cool, as did the ceiling fans. The bed was awesome, comfortable and we both slept well.

I recommend renting a car unless you are planning on staying in the immediate area; there is a well-stocked minimart type place not far from the apartments, but if you want more extensive options you will have to drive to Super Compra or Tamarindo. It is down a series of dirt roads off the main road, and most of the restaurants and shops in Playa Grande are on the main road about 3 or 4 kms back. We got good use out of our vehicle.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience and would definitely stay again. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't need the bells and whistles of hotel service (they are not changing your sheets every night, there's no TV), but still wants a nice place very close to the beach where you can do your thing in peace. Very chill.

  • Casa Camaleon was a great place to stay! The location couldn't be more perfect, just outside of Tamarindo, which was a 2 min. boat ride or a 25 min. drive away and just a few blocks walk away from a pulperia, few restaurants/bars, and Playa Grande. We actually stayed first in the studio for one week and liked it so much we extended our stay. A few of our relatives joined us in the 2 bed apt which was just fine for the 5 of us. Sharr was a great host. She worked it all out on short notice for us and it was an easy transition to move apt. She was also very nice. I can say a lot about this place, but I'll keep it simple: if you like to surf, relax, and enjoy the beach scene this is the place for you.

  • Sharr is an incredible host and more than accomodating in every respect from helping coordinate surf lessons, car rentals, to day trips outside of Playa Grande. The rooms are spotless, charming, and contain everything you need for the duration of your stay. I will definitely be recommending this place to my friends and look forward to coming back again. Thanks Sharr!

  • Great place to stay - quiet, unpopulated, on the beach. What more? Sharr can help you find fresh veggies and bread, surf lessons, rent you a board, and travel arrangements. Almost don't want to tell you about it to keep it secret.

  • Nice, quiet, and clean lodging a short walk to the beach (about 5-6 minutes), and a bit farther to the Mini Super store. Our room had all the basic ammenities you'd need and the air-con worked well. Two restaurants in the vicinity, both were decent. We definitely got our exercise walking everywhere! Sharr was very helpful and booked our scuba dive with Agua Rica in Tamarindo. You can rent Sharr's surfboards for a 5-day minimum OR rent from Playa Grande Surf Camp by the day.

Playa Grande is a really nice beach and surprisingly sparsely populated, considering its proximity to Tamarindo. Great for swimming and surfing!

Overall a really lovely, relaxing experience. Thank you!

  • Casa Camaleon is exactly as it is shown in the photos. The one bedroom unit we stayed in was clean, very comfortable and everything was in working order. There is a small grocery store, restaurant and night club within the gated community. We ate at the restaurant (Seven) one night and had an authentic Costa Rica dish that was absolutely fabulous. The staff there was outstanding as well. I highly recommend it. It’s just a short walk to the beach from Casa Camaleon. From there you can get a water taxi into Tamarindo. Some of the roads had pretty big potholes so I recommend renting a four wheel drive vehicle as we did. It made it easy getting around. Don’t forget to bring insect killer / repellant, after all, it is the tropics….LOL
Sharr communicated well throughout the booking process. Although we didn’t get to meet her while we were there, her property manager Nathalie made sure all our needs were taking care of. Check-in & Check-out times were flexible. I would definitely stay here again. Thank you Nathalie for making our stay enjoyable!

  • My husband and I stayed at the Casa Camaleon for 1 week and loved it! It was really low key, and just what we were looking for. We did not get to meet Sharr but Jeanette was super. She was very friendly and was helpful in answering any questions we had. We knew if we ran into any problems she was just next door. The Playa Grande beach was beautiful with amazing surf. This is a great little gem if your looking for something off the beaten track!

  • Casa Camaleon was a pleasant stay in a nice, quiet community in Playa Grande. The apt itself was very clean with nice accommodations for cooking (which we like to do on vacation), and the AC unit is definitely a plus! Also, the WiFi is very fast. Only a few minute walk to the beach and Tamarindo is only a 1$ boat taxi across the river (or you can walk across the mouth of the river at about waist level - just watch out for the crocs!). Sharr and Terry were very helpful and accommodating and we would definitely go back!
