Description

The space

Located in one of the most beautiful and exotic areas of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, Reloj de Arena can accommodate a large family or several couples. The home is in the middle of a lush 2.5+ acre property, which ensures absolute privacy and tranquility. Howler monkeys, toucans, parrots, hummingbirds and many other varieties of birds can be seen daily.

The property has a strategic location: 10 minute car drive to Puerto Viejo (bank, pharmacy, supermarket) or Manzanillo (cozy town with amazing restaurants), and 20 min drive to Cahuita National Park, and it is surrounded by several great restaurants and local shops. The property connects directly with the white sand beach of Punta Uva (1 minute walk through our private trail). Plenty of deck space which faces the river/canal to the north provides an ideal setting for barbecues, relaxing afternoon or just family time.

The property is surrounded by the river on the west, and the main road on the east, with the gazebo/jacuzzi with a BBQ right in front on the way to the beach. Every room has ceiling fans and the house is very well ventilated. In total there are 6 rooms and 5 bathrooms, including a deck overlooking the river. The area is perfect for ecotourism since it is surrounded by lush rainforests; it is a nature lover's paradise!

Interaction with guests

I am always available by phone but Cruz the housekeeper is always on hand to help with anything you may need!

The neighborhood

Location! We are right in front of Punta Uva beach, one of the few remaining beachfront properties that is not a hotel.

Getting around

Parking is ample inside the property. Public transport is rudimentary, we recommend getting a car to get the most out of the beach circuit. 4x4 not necessary, as the road is in great shape!

Other things to note

Renting a bike ($5 per day) is a great choice to get to know nearby beaches, but is recommended only by day

This property is a bit rustic but really beautiful and secluded and private, a real jungle lodge with a really great and well stocked convenience store across the street ( be sure to go by between 7:30 and 8 am when she gets fresh bread delivered, the pita is the best you will find anywhere). There are also really good restaurants within walking distance. Bamboocha was one of our favorites. Sitting on the large outdoor deck with binoculars, we enjoyed seeing all sorts of wildlife (i.e. howler monkeys, sloths, giant iguanas, and a kinkajou)! There is also a really nice, large outdoor space to BBQ and sit outside to eat. It's a great space for a large group to spend time together, especially if you like rustic and natural beauty. About a mile from the property towards Puerto Viejo, is the Jaguar Rescue Center, not to be missed.

We had a really great time at Reloj de Arena. We were lucky to see so much wildlife. There was a Congo monkey family the first couple days we were there. We also saw three sloths, a guatusa, an iguana, a river turtle, and multiple tropical fish when we went snorkeling. We also went fishing and kayaking. The beach is extraordinarily beautiful and about 75 yards down a beautiful pathway. The amenities and size are great for family and friends and Cruz was a very attentive and pleasant host. We will definitely have to visit again.

This place is great! You are secluded on your own estate in the rainforest ocean front. There's also a river with a dock right off the side of the house. You can kayak or paddle board down the river through the rainforest. Monkeys will be in the trees above you and if you are lucky toucans will be flying from fruit tree to fruit tree. My girlfriend and I stayed here for a few days. A large place for the two of us, but it was great to have the place to ourselves and we needed a relaxing place after many other destinations in Costa Rica prior to arriving here. The highlight (among many) of our stay would have to be sloths that we're in the tree right outside the house. We got to pet a baby sloth. He was the cutest thing and soft too! It can now be crossed off our bucket lists. We had endless Pipa's (coconuts) and couldn't get enough of them. There is a care taker on the property ( Cruz) and he is amazing! He is so nice and he is always smiling. Such a happy guy. Anything we needed he was there and willing to help. He will get you fresh Pipa's in the morning for you everyday. The rooms of the house are large and the bed we slept in was very comfy. We slept great with only nature sounds around us. Waking up to birds chirping and monkeys oooahhh'ing was just what we wanted. We would wake up and follow the path right out to the turquoise clear ocean and take a swim. There is a lady right out front on the beach that will rent you kayaks, paddle boards and snorkels/fins so no need to bring any with you. We rented bikes in Puerto Viejo town and would use that as transportation back and forth from town and to explore the surrounding areas. Everyone around is very nice and helpful with anything. The owner Luis always would get back to us promptly with any questions we had. Before we had arrived he was very helpful with any questions and or guides/info we needed for our trip. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends and family. Pura Vida

After a trip through Costa Rica my 5 travel mates and me spent a week at Luis' place in Punta Uva and it was just amazing! The house is surrounded by a tropical forest with sloths, monkeys, birds and other exotic animals. Via a short path you can reach one of the beautiful beaches of Punta Uva, so you do not need to drive by car to reach the caribean sea. There you can relax, rent kanus or do SUP tours with the guys from Green Water SUP, got a restaurant and everything you need to have a relaxed holiday. The place is not far from nice restaurants or the town Puerto Viejo, where you can go out in the evening and night and meet a lot of relaxed people from all over the world. The house itself is an open space with a terrace, a big kitchen, living room and cosy sleeping rooms. The janitor Cruz is a very friendly, lovely and funny guy and can help you with everything you need. There was a cleaning service too, so we had fresh towels and a clean house everytime - perfect service! I could write and write and write further about this perfect place, but at the end i just say: GO THERE, SPEND A GREAT TIME AND ENJOY THE PURA VIDA AS IT'S BEST! Muchas gracias Luis, we appreciated to stay at your place! PURA VIDA!!!

Oh my god, you guys. You have to stay here. A group of coworkers and I decided to do a big vacation here and it couldn't have been more perfect. To be clear: this isn't a house for top-of-the line luxury, and it's not pretending to be. It's a lovely house that almost feels like it's outdoors. As advertised, we saw monkeys, sloths, and toucans right off the back porch. And let me tell you, there was nothing more amazing than sitting outside on the amazing porch listening to a rain storm in the jungle. WOW. We got lucky; it only rained one day of our one week stay, but it was still incredible. We were initially very nervous about mosquitos, but they truly were pretty much on par with the states. We were conscientious about bug spray and I left Costa Rica with no more than three bites. Inside: there's tons of room, and the bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. Also, we were pleasantly surprised to find that each room has its own well-maintained bathroom. The kitchen was fully functional; we made everything from nachos to burgers to rice and beans (with an assist from the grill by the gazebo). The cleaners were excellent and thorough. The path to the beach is very naturey -- we ended up using the road next door instead. But the beach, once you get there, is stunning: pristine, rarely crowded and great for swimming. The Pulperia across the street is excellent. They have basically everything you need, and the German owners were incredibly friendly (and speak a number of languages). As for Luis and Cruz, they're fantastic. Luis was quick, responsive, and checked in about halfway through the trip. Cruz, the property manager, was exactly as advertised. Jovial, kind, thoughtful, funny, and incredibly helpful. He ordered us pizza, called us cabs, made us coconut water, and sang to us! The only thing worth noting is that he doesn't speak english, but we were absolutely able to communicate despite our group having at best average spanish and at worst none at all. You simply cannot beat the Reloj de Arena experience for the price. It's clean, it's safe, it's tranquil, and it's incredibly well located. Would recommend anyone stay here, and would be absolutely thrilled to go back.

This place was incredible. Location couldn't have been any better. Short drive away from town, steps away from the most beautiful beach in town, and walkable to restaurants/convenient stores. Luis was a true professional, with information and any questions answered very quickly. Cruz who takes care of the property was very helpful as well. I recommend this property to anyone with a big group. A++
