The Villa Luduvina on Chorao is a wonderful home to stay in. A beautifully renovated Portugese villa in the middle of pretty Chorao island. Well-equipped, open and airy. We spent a week there together with our one year old son and would love to visit again.
The island is an old Portugese colony off the beaten path, accessed by a small ferry that runs regularly to the mainland, private but with friendly islanders.
Some have complained about the remoteness. We did not find this a problem at all. There are two small supermarkets less than ten min away by foot. A local resto, same distance, and you can order take away by a guy called Marc. We hired a car (approx 800 rupies half day/1500 full day) whenever we wanted to go places. But a motor cycle is just as easy. If you like Goa on your own terms and do not want to hang all day on its beaches with other travelers, this is a nice place to stay. The house only has fans though, so with a small child it may be a bit hot between april-june.
The house and the island is nice, but it is far from everything and a bit isolated. No restaurants close to the place and only small shops, no market. You have to hire a car or pay for someone for transportation and the services overpriced comparing to the quality. There is no hot water in the house and no wifi in for internet users. When the hosts are not there, there is noone represents the owner, you have to solve everything alone. The owners do not seem to take much care with the house,
Our stay at the villa was truly amazing and something we will like to think back for a long time. The house is very well looked after, with lots of attention to detail. All who like to cater for themselves on their holidays will love the generous kitchen. The location itself - away from the crowds - is perfect if you want to unwind, enjoy nature and if you don't need a beach for your holiday. Thank you Fabien and a thank you to Natasha for her warm welcome! We plan to come back one day!
The Villa Luduvina is located in a tranquil village setting on the island of Charoa and yet it is only 15-20 minutes from all the attractions of Panjim. The simple, clean and uncluttered space is wonderful for a quite and meditative holiday. Wonderful light filters through the mother of pearl windows in the late afternoon and you can hear the students of the Barthemolew High School sing their morning payers. Fabien is very responsive and helpful.
Our stay at the Villa Luduvina was far more enjoyable than we had expected. The Villa itself is absolutely gorgeous, with an old world aesthetic that is hard to find.
the rooms are always cool, and it is the perfect place for a rainy day, since you can hear the rain on the tiled roof. a lot of natural light too. And the bathroom is super cool. we spent a lot of time in the villa's beautiful kitchen, which is very well equipped. It has a hammock, and a floor to cieling glass that overlooks the garden and a well. It is a good idea to buy some fresh, local seafood and make use of the kitchen. Also, make sure to stock up on a dew bottles of island "Orrack" from the restaurant nearby :)
Natasha was very helpful, she was a real sweetheart, and so was the rest of the staff.
Access to the villa is not a big problem, but it helps to rent a bike/car from the city. Panjim is just 10 mins by ferry, and ferries function 24 hours a day, quite efficiently, so there is no problem if you decide to stay out late away from the island.
Overall, it is a perfect place for a personal experience, away from the crowds, for some time to yourself, or with a small group of friends.
My stay at the ludivina was absolutly perfect. The area is wonderfull, living at the rythm of the village, the house itself is just balancing with grace the typical indo portuguese architecture and a modern and classy touch, i definitly love the bathroom...
The ludivina is perfect for those who want a quiet time in Goa... no trans music in Chorao !
Plus, taking the ferry at sunset to go back home is just a movie scene. I'll go back.
The Villa Ludovina is an exceptionally nice place to stay in and we enjoyed the week we spent there very much! The house is as beautiful as on the pictures and we would definitely stay there again. The villa provides everything you need and is the perfect place to relax. However, as it is located in a small village on Chorao Island the transportation infrastructure is a bit limited. The best way to get around is certainly on motor bikes or scooters which are cheap and easy to rent. Those who are not comfortable with riding motor bikes in the Goan traffic have to rely on buses which go every 30 minutes to and from the ferry. Renting a car in Goa, however, seems to be a very unusual thing to do and we could not find a car rental in the area of Panjim. For longer trips to remote places we therefore asked Sudesh – a driver who lives on the island – to take us there.
Fabien was very nice and helpful and also the neighbors Santana and Peter were lovely as they even provided us with an Indian cell phone while we were staying at the house. We would definitely recommend staying at the Villa Luduvina!
What we liked ...
- Nice interieur with many lovely details
- Wonderful kitchen / living room
- A lot of space!
- Slow ceiling fans in every room
- House stays relatively cool during the heat of the day
- Remote, calm & quiet
- Good mosquito nets + mosquito pleague is not very bad anyway
- Safety Boxes for free use
- Friendly neighborhood
- Good starting point for expeditions to Old Goa or Panjim
What could be improved ...
- House & garden needs a bit more maintenance
- There was no warm water / hot shower
When we arrived (first day):
- It was not really clean
- No fresh bed sheets
- Fridge was really dirty
- No gas on arrival
These things were solved during the next day
What you would want to know:
- The infrastructure is problematically if you are not mobile
- There are no restaurants
- The first shop is ca. 1 Km by feet from the house
- There's no internet connection around
- To rent a motorbike you need to go to Panjim
- It's a bit difficult to find for drivers from outside
(Better ask for Fabien & Paulines house instead of Villa Luduvina)
Over all very good value for money and a good opportunity to have a different holiday!
I spent the winter in Chorao, almost 2 months. I lived there alone, it's the perfect place to be alone with yourself and creation. The house is spacious, comfortable and cozy, the atmosphere is inspiring. Good neighborhood, close to home has a restaurant and a shop with food and other necessities. Please note, for whom it is important that there is no wi-fi, cellular communication does not work well (the house is located in a dimple over the hill). So, I like this house with whole heart, and I think it will be best desigion for lonely genius, young couples and big families.
