About this listing

Truly Unique. Do a good deed and live in a school dormitory or wooden guest house, volunteer to teach our pupils, eat lunch with our kids, and get to experience living with and like the local Cambodian.
Our island Voluntourism Project is on the Bassac River, which is about 20 km from Phnom Penh. The island is called Koh Rumdual.
It is 3 km long by 1 km wide. 320 people live there. Many of the adults being handicapped, or blind, landmine victims, or road accident victims, widows, etc... there are 34 widows families in the widows colony close to our school.
We operate a FREE Kindergarten and Primary school on this island in the middle of the Bassac river. In total we have
60 pupils, 3 teachers, one cook serving free lunches to the kids and staff each school day, and one security guard.
We have a big dorm for visiting groups on the ground floor. Matresses for up to 25 people if need be. Big room with 2 bathrooms, 2 toilets, many fans, lights, running water, and a water cooler.
Upstairs close to the library, we have a guest room with 2 beds, and attached bathroom toilets. Big veranda where many guests ( up to 20 pax) like to set up their mattresses and sleep in the open air. Nice, windy and very pleasant in summer. Beautiful open view on the Bassac river.
In front of our school we have a big kids playground and adult Volley Ball court available, and a Guest house which is a big wooden Bungallow where 6 people can sleep in one large room. It has an attached bathroom and toilet, electricity and running water. The school has a total of 5 toilets and 3 bathrooms.
We provide: free drinking water, breakfast is simple with bread and jam, coffee or tea. Lunch is rice with meat and veggies eaten at our school cantine after the kids finish their meal. Dinner will be a nice Khmer meal cooked by and served at the hut of a local island family. It will include chicken or pork, rice, vegetables, drinks, etc..
the islander family will bring you back to you hut after dinner for an early sleep. (only our school and guest house have electricity) Islanders go to sleep around 8 PM and wake up at 4:30 AM. Our school kids arrive around 6 AM and school starts at 7 AM. Lunch for the pupils is at 10:30 AM. So school is from 7 AM to 10:30 and 2 PM to 4 PM.
You can help by teaching English or French, Chinese, or anything you are good at. Some voluntourists have taught flute, music, arts and crafts, cleanliness, hygiene, painting, landscaping, gardening, sports, self-defense, languages, etc...
Friday mornings are generally used for teaching cleanliness to the kids, scrubbing them, shampooing, cutting nails, etc.. the afternoon we have a dance teacher teaching them Cambodian traditional dances, like Apsara dance, Jumpo, etc...which the visitors can join if they wish to.
We also have a big agricultural project close by which the volunteers can help with if they want to. On the island there are also cows, chicken, sheep, etc... We have a chicken farm where we raise chicken. We also do hydroponics.
