Interaction with Guests
Stick and Millie are fulltime residents of Harkers Island, and live right next door to the 'Beach Barn'. We feel that this might make vacationing easier for questions or inquiries about attractions, rates or other activities in or around Harkers Island and the Carteret County area. The cottage has been in the family for several years, and is now available for vacation rental. Stick grew up in and around the Wake County, NC area, while Millie grew up here in Carteret County. We both love this area, and would very much like to share it with folks needing just a place to getaway for a bit, or families who would rather spend quality time with each other in a family-oriented setting.
We want our guests to have a great time during their stay, but we do ask you to respect the area. We do not allow pets (due to the hardwood floors), but we do know of some excellent kennels nearby.
Great stay at the Beach Barn, homey and comfortable, with everything we needed for our stay. It felt more like a family vacation than a house rental. Millie and Robert were very welcoming and great hosts and the cottage is close to groceries, restaurants, and launch ramps which was a definite plus. Would definitely stay here again…
Millie and Stick were great hosts! Very accommodating. The cottage was so very comfortable; the sheets were clean and the bed so comfortable! We unfortunately had to cut our stay short, but will be back again soon we hope!
We had a lovely stay at the Beach Barn over Labor Day weekend. Millie and Robert were very responsive before we arrived, and very welcoming but not at all intrusive during our stay. The cottage was great for our group of four (two couples) -- it is an older property but quite comfortable nonetheless. We made good use of the charcoal grill and the kitchen each day!
The neighborhood was very relaxed and quiet, even over Labor Day weekend -- Harkers Island an excellent base for exploring Cape Lookout National Seashore and a great alternative to Beaufort if you are looking to relax with friends or family.
We loved our stay on Harker's Island. Loved the quick drive to the ferries, seeing the ocean from the front window in the morning and close proximity to the grocery store and restaurants. Millie was very welcoming and responsive to our needs, she was an excellent hostess. We would not recommend the Beach Barn if you are sensitive to mold or have asthma. There are a lot of decorative glass items around the cabin, things could easily be broken, so it may be difficult to have small children around. We did have some concerns about the structural integrity of the cabin, as the floor, ceiling and furniture were all slanting quite a bit. I cannot say we would stay at the Beach Barn again, as we all had allergy symptoms while in the cabin. But, we did thoroughly enjoy our time at the lighthouse and on Lookout Island.
I'm so very sorry that MIchelle had these issues with the Beach Barn. We have never had anyone complain about odors or mold before her stay. The cabin is actually 3 cabins that were built together through the years. That's how the original folks of the Island "improved" and "added on" to their houses. It is, we can assure you, very structurally sound. I've never noticed it "slanting", and no one else has ever brought that to our attention. But thank you for your opinion, and we appreciate you staying with us.
Staying at the Beach Barn was the best decision my friends an I made for our vacation down to Crystal Coast. Staying here is better than any hotel experience. The house is equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay and is located close to the local general store and the ferry to get you over to the beach. I was sad we could not stay longer but definitely plan on going back.
Our family of five had a wonderful time at the "Beach Barn." Robert and Millie were always accessible but not intrusive. The house itself was cute and comfortable, and bigger than we thought it would be. The beds were very comfortable, and the house had everything we needed for our stay. We wish we could have stayed longer! We had a wonderful time.
My wife, Millie, and I live in Paradise!! I grew up and lived in Wake County, NC and moved to Harkers Island over 20 years ago, realizing that the fast paced life didn't suit me anymore! I am a fishing charter guide, and there's no other place for me to live and work!! Millie grew up here in Carteret County, mostly over in Atlantic Beach. We live right next door to the Beach Barn, so we are close by to answer questions, give assistance or swap fish stories!!
