This 1507 sq ft. (140 m2) two floors country house is a 19th Century cottage built in stone, recently restored (2011) and located in the south Burgundy. The house is completely surrounded by pine forests and pastures on which the typical white Charolais cattle graze. It is in fact on these gently rolling hills that the best beef in France is reared.
This immersion into the green, which offers you absolute silence and calm, gives the cottages a unic atmosphere thanks to which you can relax and enter into harmony with nature. Squirrels and deers are often right all around. Given the upper position of this house (this place is called Mont Chef), from the garden you can also enjoy of an extraordinary view on the medieval chapel of Chassigny sous Dun.
Squirrels and deers are right around the cottage.
You can also do a lot of wonderful walks in the woods, given the many paths you can take just going out the door.

The entrance at the ground floor open onto a large double living room, in which antique furnishing and a fireplace (open on two sides) contribute to create the traditional charm of countryside. The floor is in the typical terracotta tiles and there an two antique dining tables (one is extensible), nine chairs, two antiques cupboards, a convertible sofa (for 2 adults), and a CD player.

The fireplace, double, heats the two parts of the living room, and thanks to a special ventilation system, it heats also the two bedrooms at the upper floor.
In the living room there are also two electtric radiators.

The kitchen is quite spacious and fully equipped. It’s fitted with a dishwasher, a gas cooktop, a refrigerator & freezer, an Italian “caffettiera”, and all of the pots, pans, and utensils you’ll need.

At the upper floor, there are two big bedrooms, the first one with a double bed, the second one with 2 double ancient beds. Every bedroom has an electic radiator, and the possibility of add 2 cots (for 4 years younger children) and 2 mattress beds.

In front of the WC there is a washing machine.

The bathroom is spacious and features a bathtub. There are two “toilettes” in red marble and an electric boiler provides hot water.
There is a radiator which allows for adjustable and efficient heating during the winter months.

Besides this living area of about 1510 sq ft., there are also some dependencies: two stables, a barn, a porch where you can park your car, and a porch where to store the woodfire.

More over, in the garden (more than 10.000 sq ft. – about 1000 m2) there is an “atelier” in wood, an ancient water well, an orchard with two cherry trees, one pear tree and two plum trees, three walnut trees, and a lots of other plants and flowers. There is a little barbecue, and the garden is equipped with a table and five chairs to make it the ideal place for taking your breakfast during the warm season!

The first supermarket is at 5' by car and in the centre of the village of Chauffailles (7’-10’) there are also bakers, pharmacies, the post office, some bars and restaurants, a tobacconist and a train station. Chauffailles is about 1 hour far from Lyon TGV station by train, and 45’ far from Macon Loche TGV by car.

Our cottage is in a very strategic position because from here you can visit in less than 1 hour by car many wonderful sites: castels, roman churches, lakes, botanic gardens...

20’ far from Mont Chef there is LA CLAYETTE, dominated by a magnificent châteaux surrounded by a lake, right in the centre of the town. There is a vintage car museum in part of the château, and the tourist office is at the entrance. At 32 Rue Centrale you will find chef Bernard Dufoux. He is the master of chocolate, and specialises particularly in truffles and cream fillings. The delicious smell is quite intoxicating, and the chocolates are to die for.

Other famous historical places you can easily reach are CLUNY and its abbey, PARAY LE MONIAL, with its typical Roman church and one of the great centres of Christianity, welcoming over 400,000 pilgrims every year, AUTUN with its cathedral and antique roman ruins, and the famous earthenware and crockery in CHAROLLES.

If you enjoy WALKING, you will find a lot of hiking paths and lanes. If you enjoy TENNIS you will find a court at 7 kms from Baron. If you enjoy HORSE-RIDING you will have to drive 15 kms.
If you prefer SWIMMING, instead, you can find at about 1 hour by car the Saint Point Lake and the Villerest Lake with their water activities.
FISHING or FROG FISHING is possible too in the numerous streams and ponds present in the area.

  • Chiara&Alexandre made our first experience with airbnb a good one. Very nice house in a beautifull countryside. Chiara&Alexandre were flexible and replied quickly and pleasantly to all our questions. The house is ideal for a quiet stay and for children. We were very happy about the complete experience!

  • We just stayed at Mont Chef for two nights and had such a lovely time that we wished we'd stayed longer. The situation of the house is picturesque, with views of the rolling Burgundy hills from the garden. It was fantastic to walk around the grounds and along the lanes.

The house is down a country road between the villages of Chauffailles and La Clayette, well placed for exploring many villages. At first it seemed like it would be hard to find, but Chiara arranged for someone to meet us and so we were escorted to the property by the very helpful Jean-Luc. He showed us around the property, was very happy to help, provided us with a lot of local information and even came back out to the house to help us when we didn't know how to change the gas bottle.

The house itself is a beautiful stone cottage with a glorious fireplace, a seriously comfortable bed and everything needed for a relaxing stay. I wish my French was better so I could have tried some of the amazing books lining the bedroom walls!

Thanks to Chiara and Alexandre for allowing us to stay at their beautiful house. This was our first airbnb experience Chiara's quick response to any messages was reassuring. I hope we can stay again one day!

    Response from Chiara & Alexandre:

This is the only negative review we have and we are very sorry . The fact is that almost nothing of what Jean -François describes really happened : the lady who accompanied them to the house has NOT arrived late for check -in, she rather expected them all day, neither we nor her have ever received the SMS mentioned, the house is in a beautiful location surrounded by nature (see ALL the other reviews! ) and close to many places of cultural interest, vineyards, forests, churches ect . Probably these guests do not appreciate the natural scenery and the tranquility of the countryside. Instead, what Jean -François did not say is that : they have soiled and wet mattresses (probably pee) and has not said a word, they went away leaving the washing machine on, they used all the linens, even one that does not was available to them and have never thanked the lady who accompanied them for all the information that she gave them about restaurants and places to visit (they never responded to her sms). They were also quite pushy and rude in demanding breakfast, knowing full well that they have not rented a bed and breakfast. In a few words : I suggest to every host on Airbnb to never rent her/his house to Jean-François and his friends. She/he could have a very bad surprise! This is our answer, but the best answer to Jean -François and his friends is the reviews that all the other guests left about our country house.

  • Mont Chef was perfect for us. It was secluded and there was very little traffic during our stay. The house is very pretty and the views over the surrounding countryside are magnificent. Our stay was in mid-February so we were very grateful for the excellent wood burner. The bed was also very comfortable. Chiara and her neighbours (who met us to take us to Mont Chef) were very kind and helpful.

  • That's a lovely place where we spent Christmas…. Very nicely decorated and cosy house ...with a fireplace and everything you need! The area is very nice and you can rest and enjoy the silence around…. Smooth communication with Chiara… I would surely be back maybe in the summer because the country side is lovely there…
    Highly recommended!

  • Chiara & Alexandre's house is wonderful. An incredible wall of books, a lovely garden and nice cows as neighbours.

We had a great weekend, and Chiara has been really helpful to prepare our stay.

  • The house is astonishingly beautiful, set in a marvellous laid back environment in total calm. The interior and especially the library demonstrate the very good taste of its charming owners! We will definitely come back for longer!

  • We spent june in Mont Chef and loved it. The quiet garden, with the company of cows, and the most amazing panoramic view was our favorite spot. The house was amazing as well, all you can ask for! We loved taking walks in the surrounding area, there is plenty to see. I'm sure we'll come back in the future!

  • From the outset we were blown away by the location. So quiet and such great views. The house is very homely and we felt we belonged. There was such a lot of space, a great kitchen, fantastic bathroom and a huge fireplace to keep us cosy. Everything needed was provided and although Chiara was not there to welcome us, she had arranged for her friend Christiane to show us how to get to the house and show us around it. We really enjoyed our stay.
