Prato di Sotto is for the connoisseur. A collection of historic stone buildings sits above the tiny 13th century hamlet of Santa Giuliana. Lovingly restored by the owner, Penny Radford, and furnished with her personal collection of kilim rugs and antiques from around the world, the emphasis is on comfort and style.
Il Molino is a charming studio with an open plan living/sleeping area and a separate bathroom. Situated on the top floor of the 14th century olive mill, there is also a large covered terrace overlooking the central courtyard. The double bed can be separated from the rest of the living area by an attractive wooden screen. There is small but well equipped kitchen corner with an oven, hob and fridge, and a separate bathroom with a bath and shower over. There is satellite TV and stereo and a wood burning stove for the cooler months. The terrace is a lovely spot to eat al fresco or just relax in the deckchairs provided.
The garden has been carefully designed to offer elegance and privacy, scented with roses, jasmine and lavender, while the 15m infinity edge pool is ideal for relaxing with a book after a refreshing swim. Penny offers her guests a unique mix of rugged Umbrian scenery with the warm hospitality of an English country house, sharing her knowledge of Italy, the pick of her vegetable garden and the company of her friendly dogs, always available for walks!
This charming retreat, high in the Umbrian hills, offers luxurious comfort and perfect peace, yet is only 30 minutes drive from Perugia.
My partner and I have just returned from our 4th trip to Prato di Sotto and it is now firmly embedded as our annual pilgrimage for a piece of perfect tranquility. The warmth and unwavering hospitality from Penny, the owner, makes everything effortless and she always goes out of her way to help with anything you need and has loads of local knowledge about the best that is around in the area as well as a host of books, maps, events and beautiful places to eat.
We stayed in the Molino, an exquisite studio apartment but we have stayed in other apartments too, all with breathtaking views over the mountain range. The rooms are immaculately furnished with Penny's wonderful chic rustic style and everything you need is in the apartment to be self-contained including log burner to snuggle around if visiting in the late autumn. It is all super clean with fresh linen and towels.
Penny provides produce from the garden when in season and there is an abundance of herbs you can help yourself to for cooking. Don’t miss out on the wonderful eggs from her free-range girls, not to be missed. Penny has four lovely friendly dogs that make it all the more homely and we 'borrow them' for wonderful long walks in the local forest which is filled to the brim with wildlife- it is not to be missed. I cannot recommend Prato di Sotto enough and Penny's colossal hospitality.
I've stayed at Penny's place three times, and have always enjoyed my stay there. The views are spectacular, the rooms are very tastefully appointed, and Penny is an amazing host who gives you attention without being intrusive. I love munching on her grapes in midsummer, smelling the roses, and eating lunch or dinner on the terrace. The hikes are spectacular, too! The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook. The location is perfect for day trips exploring Cortona, Assissi, Perugia, Florence, or Sienna, but the best times are just relaxing at Prato di Sotto--either poolside or in the shade of her many terraces, which are professionally landscaped with an English flair. I have taken my family and friends to stay with Penny, and everyone raves about the vacation. It's my favorite place to be in Italy!
Penny is a wonderful, generous and thoughtful host and Prato di Sotto probably the nearest thing to an earthly paradise.
