Deer Harbor on beautiful Orcas Island is located in the 'Rain Shadow' area of the Great Pacific Northwest enjoying only 23-25 inches of rain and over 260 sunny days annually. Northern Puget Sound is home to just under 90 orca whales, countless seals, sea lions, otters, Dahl's porpoises, Minke whales, salmon, eagles, thus, fishing and whale-watching are very popular activities. Orcas Island has numerous parks including the 1500 acre Turtleback Mountain Preserve, and Deer Harbor's own community Waterfront Park. The 110 acre incomparable private preserve for guests at the Gnome House is considered a treasure by local, state and Federal environmental agencies and institutions.

The entire wonderful Gnome House is yours to relish. Your private hot tub under the stars, a full kitchen inside as well as a campfire pit, picnic table, and propane barbeque outside. Our private 110 acres contain a freshwater wildfowl marsh, a renowned wildlife and bird watching paradise, nature trails, fruit orchards, ponds, streams, meadows, forests, magnificent views, farm land, gardens and incredible views everywhere. Our play set is nearby---a popular feature with the kids.

In addition to the extraordinary beauty and serenity of Nature, so inspiring to us all, the incredible good weather in Deer Harbor is one of the main reasons for living here. Deer Harbor on beautiful Orcas Island is located in the 'Rain Shadow' area of the Great Pacific Northwest enjoying only about 25 inches of rain and over 260 sunny days annually. This means that we can enjoy the great outdoors all year long, hiking, biking, sailing, fishing, etc. There have been documented over 80 species of birds frequenting our extremely vibrant freshwater marsh. There are a variety of environmental programs in progress. We work with scientists, students, and Native Americans on our restoration efforts. Our property is the site of the first white European settler on Orcas Island, Louis Cayou, who married into the Samish Nation in the mid-1800s. We are working with the Samish descendants of Cayou in our restoration efforts, and hope to have their annual Canoe Journey with about 60 canoes stop here in the future. The Deer Harbor area of Orcas Island enjoys some of the nicest weather these "banana belt" San Juan Islands offer---lots of sun and little rainfall! This "rain shadow" effect makes for exceptional "off-season" visits here usually with delightful weather. Sunny Deer Harbor is a hub of San Juan Islands marine activity, with fishing, whale-watching for Orca and Minke whales, sea kayaking, boat rentals and sailing charters available, as well as moorage facilities for your own boat. We are Bob and Meg Connor, the owners of the Gnome House, Maggie’s Manor, Maggie's Getaway and an awe-inspiring 140 acre paradise on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. We consider ourselves blessed to have been able to live in beautiful, sunny Deer Harbor on Orcas Island, for 39 years so far, and have raised our three sons in this island paradise. Here is our story: In 1974, just before the first of our three sons was born, we chose to change our life dramatically. We were living in an apartment house, with a postage stamp lawn, involved in numerous businesses taking our energies; it became our #1 goal to change our lifestyle to be more compatible with our family values. We both wanted our children to grow up in an environment similar to Bob’s childhood in Poulsbo, Washington, reveling in and thriving because of a rural, simple, old-fashioned, family-oriented lifestyle. All three of our boys reveled in the rural island life, with endless outdoor creative adventures, sports, and just good “clean” fun all of the time. To this day, they love the outdoors, enjoying hiking, skiing, camping, mountain climbing, etc. The Orcas Island School was and continues to be a very good one, preparing students well for college. During their school years, all three of our sons were very active in all sorts of activities, especially sports. Bob was baseball coach for 15+ years, and both of us attending every game that our boys were in, either coaching, score-keeping, or cheering our voices hoarse. Our sons still love to visit Orcas Island often, and are now sharing their childhood lifestyle with their own families. We have an 11 year old grand-daughter, a 7 year old grandson, a 6 year old grand-daughter and grand baby #4, a grand-daughter arrived on May 18th, 2012. How thankful we are that all 3 of our sons, their wives, and their children all live in the Pacific Northwest, just a couple of hours from us! It is true that the Puget Sound area is known for its rainfall, but Bob knew about the areas with less rain and more sunshine. After searching for our perfect property in the Pacific Northwest, we discovered the wonderful San Juan Islands, located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. We sold all of our Seattle businesses, bought 150 acres, and promptly moved to an island. This was over 39 years ago, and our delight in our property is stronger than ever. We love everything about it. We know that still today, there are few who comprehend the enormous ecological value and the boundless diverse beauty of the jewel that we steward. We have been renting our vacation rental houses since the early 1990s, loving that we can share our beautiful and treasured property with so many other wonderful guests, now friends whom we love to see on their repeat visits, and new guests soon to become friends, when they make their first visit to Orcas Island.
