About this listing
Our peaceful home in the Bonny Doon area of the Santa Cruz mountains is surrounded by trees and birdsong, a quiet retreat that is still centrally located. Enjoy the garden and orchard, the redwood grove, the hot tub, and a warm local welcome!
The beauty of the Santa Cruz mountains awaits you! Our home is situated exceptionally well, balancing accessibility with seclusion. Ten minutes to Felton's quaint main street, fifteen minutes to the beach, twenty minutes to downtown Santa Cruz, ninety minutes to San Francisco up scenic Highway 1. But when you are sipping tea or a beer on the porch, you'll hear nothing but the hummingbirds and the wind in the trees.
We have two bedrooms for rent in our home. This listing is for one of the rooms - check my other listing if you have a larger party and would like to rent the other room as well, or you need other dates available. Both rooms have large comfortable king sized beds. There is a large bathroom downstairs for guest use, shared between the two bedrooms and stocked with shampoo, locally made soaps, and other toiletries. The bedrooms are all downstairs, while the master bedroom and main living area are upstairs, so you will have a feeling of privacy. Kitchen access is not included. Baked goods (our famous lavender shortbread cookies!) and seasonal fruit from our orchard and garden make appearances for our guests. Excellent high-speed wireless access throughout the house. Parking is not a problem.
We share our home with a friendly cat and dog. The cat spends the majority of his time lounging and prowling outside, and the dog is a calm Aussie / English Setter mix who doesn't bark or jump up. He enjoys new people and loves belly rubs.
We are always trying to make our lifestyle more sustainable, and installed a full set of solar panels last year! The house is nearly 100% solar powered, and the hot tub solar-heated. In the winter we use a wood stove that burns what we've cleared from our land. We also line-dry our sheets and towels, compost, and recycle.
The lower deck wraps around most of the house, and guests can enjoy access to the garden, hot tub, and endless hiking trails through redwoods and past a natural spring. Our 8+ acres backs up to Henry Cowell State Park. Soak in the hot tub while enjoying an unobstructed view of the stars!
We keep the upstairs (kitchen, living room, master bedroom) private, but on occasion can accommodate special requests for kitchen use. There is a refrigerator/freezer downstairs for guest use. The washer, dryer, and clothes hanger are downstairs and you have free access to them - we always encourage green living and use of the clothes hanger! It works wonderfully.
Interaction with Guests
We are happy to have you join us for a drink on the porch or by the fireside, or to set you up and give you your privacy, as you prefer. Some of our best airbnb memories have been impromptu dinner gatherings in the garden under the mimosa tree. We have lived all over the Bay Area and are full of good ideas for places to visit, and we love sharing stories.
However, we do not babysit our guests and expect you to be self-sufficient and capable of using common sense. We may or may not be home when you arrive, and we make all reasonable efforts to be reachable. We are both busy and host with airbnb for the joy of it, because we love meeting interesting people and sharing our beautiful home with appreciative guests.
Bonny Doon is a charming community in the mountains, blending serious old-timers with vacation-home implants, and intentionally keeping itself "rural and natural." The people here consciously cultivate a sense of community and are genuinely friendly.
The beauty of the Santa Cruz mountains is phenomenal. Our home is centrally located between several state parks: Big Basin, Henry Cowell (to which we are adjacent), Wilder Ranch and Waddell Beach.
The beach town of Davenport is fifteen minutes away, and boasts a good restaurant (the Roadhouse), a locally-famous cafe/bakery, frequent live music, and a sprinkling of shops, all with Pacific views. The mountain towns of Felton, Ben Lomond, and Boulder Creek area also nearby and quaint.
Nearby Santa Cruz is full of charms that include and transcend its tourist-spot reputation! Don't miss going to the beach - the boardwalk for tourist tradition, or colorful Capitola, or one of many secluded coves such as Bonny Doon Beach. Enjoy the chic Pacific Avenue Mall, an array of thrift/vintage shops, a vibrant music scene, and some great restaurants.
The bus line runs on Empire Grade just a quarter mile away down a private road, and you are welcome to investigate it. Having private transport is highly recommended, though. Parking is simple and abundant. The nearest airport is Monterey, which is quite nice, though it's small - SFO is just over an hour away. Rental cars are abundantly available there. Taxis and Uber are difficult to find in this area.
Other Things to Note
We do charge $20 extra per person over 2 people, including babies and children. Please check with us if you plan on bringing a young child, as the wall between the two rooms is thin and we want all our guests to have a good experience!
We believe in flexible rules, but try to keep our place and the neighborhood calm and peaceful.
Because of fire danger, we are very strict that there must not be any open flames outside. No candles, no smoking, no fire pits.
No drugs, no firearms. We prefer that you not eat in the bedroom. Be respectful of the space and the things in it.
Andrea accepted my same day last minute reservation without hesitation which I was very grateful for. Her home is incredibly homey feeling and inviting...a great work of architecture and landscaping. Slept well on a comfortable bed, house was quiet, went in jacuzzi to stargaze, hiked through the backyard, hiked through redwoods around the corner, loved my stay and I hope to be back! Oh, and great lost of recommendations for things to do in the area!
The house in the woods was beautiful and great to relax! Our room was also very nice and had a very big and comfortable bed. Andrea was very nice and gave us good advice about where to go in Santa Cruz! The dog and the cat were both very friendly, too! All in all we had a very nice stay there and can recommend the house for all visitors of Santa Cruz if you have a car!
Andrea was a wonderful host! We found our room clean and cozy. The house is located right among the woods and you can take a nice short walk. My fiancé and I especially loved the clean and fresh air and the views from the house.
This was my second stay at this location and it was just as lovely as the first! Quiet evenings mad serene mornings in the hot tub surrounded by trees in the mountains above Santa Cruz! The hosts are so lovely, we look forward to staying here again soon!
This was a great place, nice beds, clean rooms and fantastic surroundings. Andrea was a great hostess!
Andrea and Karim were very welcoming and made mine and my Girlfriend's stay very memorable. Their house is located in the mountains of Bonny Doon and very appealing to people that love the outdoors. Hot tub and outdoor décor was wonderful. They opened our eyes to much more than the boardwalk. I would recommend this place to anyone that is staying in the Santa Cruz area!
We had a wonderful time staying with Andrea and Karim! They were friendly and helpful with our trip planning/preparation and a treat to speak with in person. After hiking through Big Basin, a comfortable bed and a soak in their hot tubs was exactly what we needed! Highly recommended!

About the Host, Andrea And Karim
Hi there! I'm a friendly and thoughtful person who loves being outdoors and enjoys making things. The varieties of human experience are fascinating to me - I'm an anthropology graduate student and avid reader. I delight in gardening, good food, and spending time with my sweet huge horse.
As a host, my partner Karim and I are cheerful and warm, happy either to get to know you or to give you space, whichever you're in the mood for. Enjoy privacy on the deck for your morning tea, sit with us by the fire and share a glass of wine and travel stories, gather up tips for all the good spots to eat and play nearby. We have lived all over the Bay Area and know it well - I am a native Californian and Karim is a charming French transplant. We share our home with four delightful cats who are likewise equally happy to do their own thing or snuggle up and be friends. Between us, we have traveled to over 30 countries and have lived in Germany, Ghana, Italy, and Sweden.
