Half way along Hadrian’s Wall, the property lies just half a mile south of the Wall's highest point where the Wall crosses the Pennines close to Rapishaw Gap. The views from the lounge, kitchen, bedroom and garden terrace are stunning, looking south over the excavations of Vindolanda half a mile below and up to Thorngrafton Common, then over the rolling hills of Northumberland, County Durham and Cumbria.
Local sites include Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads Roman fort (Vercovicium), Vindolanda Roman fort and museum, Steel Rigg and Cragg Lough. Further afield is Kielder Reservoir and Kielder Observatory.
Local activities include rambling (Hadrian’s Path National Trail and the Pennine Way National Trail), rock climbing (High Shield Craggs and Steel Rigg provide perfect bouldering opportunities for competent climbers), bird watching and wildlife (from Old High Shield curlews, owls, and buzzards can be seen and Grindon Lough is a popular spot), cycling (Hadrian’s Cycleway National Route 72, Pennine Cycleway National Route 68, and bicycles can be rented from us), and fishing (the North Tyne river provides first class salmon and sea trout fishing, many clubs sell day permits to visitors).
Situated in easy travelling distance to Cumbria, the Lake District, Carlisle, the Scottish Borders, Newcastle, Gateshead, the Sage Gateshead (flagship music concert venue) the Baltic (contemporary art gallery), the Metro Centre, Northumberland Heritage Coast and Castles, including Alnwick, Bamburgh, Warkworth, Lindisfarne, Dunstanburgh and many more. National Trust properties include Cragside House and Gardens, Wallington Hall, and also nearby are the beautiful villages of Corbridge, Bellingham and Haydon Bridge.
Michael's place was excellent. Everything was in perfect order waiting for us, the fire was even set and ready to be lit. The location is perfect for exploring a very well preserved section of Hadrian's wall, and views down into a green valley, even overlooks an old Roman fort!
