About this listing
The Howler Monkey Hideaway is a cozy cedar cabina in the mountains above Dominical. It is located close to both the beaches and many local attractions, yet is a tranquil, cool, safe and natural environment on our community-owned organic farm.
The Cabina is made of local cedar with hardwood floors. It features a main living/dining/kitchen space with 2 couch platforms that can also serve as extra beds for children, plus a dining table with chairs, and equipped kitchen with stove, oven and regular size refrigerator. Two screen doors lead from there onto a large open roofed deck, perfect for yoga, meditation or swinging in the hammocks (provided). There is a small separate bedroom with queen size bed (orthopedic pillow top mattress). The toilet and sink are indoors, and there is an outdoor shower enclosure with hot shower. It is perfect for a single person, a couple, or a small family with children over 4 years of age (the deck has no railing and the space isn't suitable for toddlers). The cabina is completely screened and has curtains in the bedroom.

The Howler Monkey Hideaway is located on Fuente Verde, our 60-acre community-owned organic farm, which provides safe and tranquil surroundings. It is a very clean environment, and perfect for those with environmental, chemical or EMF sensitivities. You are free to explore the farm and hike the trails into the protected primary rainforest that begins less than a hundred yards from your door. Listen to howler monkeys serenading the sunrises and sunsets! Take the family for a dip in our swimming hole and enjoy hiking up the river. Our farm has water from its own springs and abundant fruit trees. In rainy season waterfalls pour off the face of the ridge next to us, and just a bit further down the valley is Diamante Falls. one of Costa Rica's tallest waterfalls at 600 feet.
If you would like to stay on our farm, but need a larger space, check out a unique 3 bedroom earthbag house called Domes, we have to rent as well. You can see the listing here: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2395279
There is excellent bird watching on the farm: our gardens, trees, ponds and rivers provide ample food and shelter for many of the 860 bird species that live in or pass through Costa Rica. Our Fuente Verde bird count is close to 200 species! Best times for bird watching are from December to April, when the North American migrant species are overwintering here.
Interaction with Guests
I also live on the farm, only a short 5 minute walk away, so am available to help with questions. I can also help organize tours and activities if you like.
Fuente Verde is perfectly located in the magical Diamante Valley, midway between the bustling dusty surf town of Dominical on the southern Pacific Coast, and the city of San Isidro de El General, gateway to Chirripo Mountain. So within a short drive you have access to endless beaches, world class surf, or Costa Rica's tallest mountain. There are an incredible number of things to do in the area; local tour companies offer zip-lining, whitewater kayaking, surf lessons, mangrove tours, sport fishing, whale-watching, waterfall hikes & rappelling, plus so much more! So the Howler Monkey Hideaway makes an excellent home base for exploring, and a quiet sanctuary to return to at the end of the day.
There are simple grocery stores and restaurants in the nearby village of Tinamastes, only 1.5 km away. Tuesday mornings there is a small organic market where you can buy locally grown organic fruits & veggies, plus prepared food, beautiful arts & crafts, and delicacies like water buffalo cheese. Every Thursday and Friday there is a huge Farmer's Market in San Isidro, 1/2 hour away by car, where you will also find large well-stocked supermarkets and everything else you may need.
Getting here and away
To best take advantage of your vacation time we strongly recommend renting a car. To access the farm a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. If you don't plan to leave the farm often you can take a taxi here (about $30 from Dominical or San Isidro) and then hire taxis or a rental car for day trips. There is no public transportation directly to the farm. The nearest daily bus routes and shops are 2 km away. The walk from the farm to the bus or shops is mostly uphill on a rough dirt road that will be either dusty or muddy depending on the season.
The majestic Tinamastes ridge rises 1000 vertical feet, less than 100 yards from your door. It is full of monkeys and birds!
