The Howler Monkey Hideaway is a cozy cedar cabina in the mountains above Dominical. It is located close to both the beaches and many local attractions, yet is a tranquil, cool, safe and natural environment on our community-owned organic farm.

The space

The Cabina is made of local cedar with hardwood floors. It features a main living/dining/kitchen space with 2 couch platforms that can also serve as extra beds for children, plus a dining table with chairs, and equipped kitchen with stove, oven and regular size refrigerator. Two screen doors lead from there onto a large open roofed deck, perfect for yoga, meditation or swinging in the hammocks (provided). There is a small separate bedroom with queen size bed (orthopedic pillow top mattress). The toilet and sink are indoors, and there is an outdoor shower enclosure with hot shower. It is perfect for a single person, a couple, or a small family with children over 4 years of age (the deck has no railing and the space isn't suitable for toddlers). The cabina is completely screened and has curtains in the bedroom.

Guest access

The Howler Monkey Hideaway is located on Fuente Verde, our 60-acre community-owned organic farm, which provides safe and tranquil surroundings. It is a very clean environment, and perfect for those with environmental, chemical or EMF sensitivities. You are free to explore the farm and hike the trails into the protected primary rainforest that begins less than a hundred yards from your door. Listen to howler monkeys serenading the sunrises and sunsets! Take the family for a dip in our swimming hole and enjoy hiking up the river. Our farm has water from its own springs and abundant fruit trees. In rainy season waterfalls pour off the face of the ridge next to us, and just a bit further down the valley is Diamante Falls. one of Costa Rica's tallest waterfalls at 600 feet.

There is excellent bird watching on the farm: our gardens, trees, ponds and rivers provide ample food and shelter for many of the 860 bird species that live in or pass through Costa Rica. Our Fuente Verde bird count is close to 200 species! Best times for bird watching are from December to April, when the North American migrant species are overwintering here.

Interaction with guests

I also live on the farm, only a short 5 minute walk away, so am available to help with questions. I can also help organize tours and activities if you like.

What a wonderful stay in Fuente Verde. Our cabina was one of the high points of our stay. Raven was welcoming and so helpful. The property is covered with banana trees and coconut and mandarina and all kinds of beautiful birds and little lizards. The Howler Monkeys sing you to sleep and greet you at sunrise and the birdsong is lovely. I enjoy cooking and the kitchen had all I needed, including a chorreador for making coffee (bring ground beans). The cabina is well made and appointed with anything you need. Plenty of electrical outlets. The outdoor shower was incredible! Showering in the sunshine and under the moon, can you imagine? We were greeted by a kitchen table of freshly picked tropical plants/flowers and a bowl of bananas that grow right there in your back yard. Raven also provided us with cold filtered water in the fridge and all the info we needed about what to do and where to go. You definitely need to be someone who likes the outdoors and can handle the drive in and out with a 4WD. There is a notebook with all of the information you need about trash, composting, how to use the washing machine etc. I felt safe and relaxed. Especially when lounging in the hammock on the porch and watching the toucans fly in and out of their nest. We ventured to the town of Dominical for wireless (at Mono Congo). There is also an organic market there and SO many beaches along the coast. Being up the mountain was nice as it was cooler there. You go a little over 16K on Rt. 243 from Rt. 34. I would definitely stay there again! Be sure to visit Nauyaca Falls down the road (either by horseback or hike). If you want to day hike around Chirripo, call ahead for day passes. I highly recommend staying in Fuente Verde and hope to go back. Pura Vida!

My husband and I spent 4 days at Raven's Howler Monkey Hideaway and it was great! The cabin itself is very nice and clean and the location is terrific. It's like camping in the jungle but with the comforts of home. You can hear the Howler Monkeys everyday and the fresh bananas off the tree are wonderful. It's about a 15 - 20 minute drive to the beach and a little more to the bigger city of San Isidro. We truly enjoyed this place and would definitely stay again. If you want a peaceful place to get away from everything, this is it. Raven was a great host too, she was available if we needed something but never intruded on our privacy. By the way, the outdoor shower was awesome!!!

Staying at Raven's cabin was even better than we expected. The outdoor shower was a dream, the view of the valley ridge was amazing and the farm had much to explore. We rented a car (4x4) and made day trips to Dominical, Osa Valley, Manuel Antonio and Hacidena Baru. Raven gave us info on local markets to get food but we were unable to make them. She gave us all the info we needed and extra tips that made our trip better than we could have planned it. The cabin is clean, it was cool enough at night (February) and all the cooking utensils are there.

What a lovely cabina! Raven was so helpful before and during our stay. We were pleasantly surprised when we realized that we did not have to drive to the cloud forest because we were staying in it. The outdoor shower was amazing for bird watching and enjoying the view. We saw aracaris, cherries tanagers, and many other beautiful birds from the comfort of the cabina. We enjoyed exploring the Tinamastes farmer's market and the San Isidrio farmers market. There was also a nice jungle trail to explore on the farm. The farm was located near Hacienda Baru where we hiked beautiful trails. Other day trips: Manuel Antonio, Uvita, and nearby waterfalls.

Hi, I'm Raven. I wandered into Costa Rica nearly 20 years ago while backpacking from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska. I loved it so much I never really left. In my previous life I was a fashion designer, before leaving it all behind to become a world traveller and Student of Life. My passion is creating Sacred Wedding and Vow Renewal Ceremonies for couples who desire to celebrate their love in this beautiful country.

I love the natural beauty of this magical land I feel blessed to call home. Come visit and maybe you will fall under the spell of Costa Rica too!
