We had a lovely time at the turtle house! The sounds at night were magical and the pets were very friendly. The house was well stocked with everything-- even a guidebook that helped us plan exciting adventures. Liz and her husband were very thoughtful and ready to help. The house's proximity to Hilo, volcanoes, and farmers markets was great for us.
Elizabeth and Steve were friendly and happily provided us with recommendations and information when needed. The house is as advertised, located in a very lush and tranquil spot, surrounded by tropical trees. We fell asleep to the sound of the coqui frog's call (which initially did require some adjusting too, as they we're sometimes a bit loud).
The house did not get too hot, and with the fans running in the rooms the temperature was perfect.
Our hosts have chickens and graciously offered us fresh eggs. Any left over food scraps we were able to give to the chickens instead of having to throw them in the garbage. Recycling of plastic and metal is available.
Plenty of bath and kitchen towels are available and the asher/dryer was very convenient.
We appreciated the fact that the hosts kept the bottles of soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc that past guests had left as we arrived late and did not have the opportunity to buy these at a store prior to our arrival. It's great that they opt to reuse instead of throwing them out.
There is also a hair dryer which was handy. Good shower pressure.
The kitchen also had some items left by previous guests such as coffee, salt, pepper, cooking oil, soya sauce which were useful.
It was well equipped in terms of cooking utensils, knives, pots & pans, toaster, microwave, full sized drip coffee machine, cutting board.
Furthermore our hosts also had boogy boards, snorkel equipment and water shoes which we were able to use.
Oh, and they also had one of the best travel guide's I've read specifically about the Big Island written by someone who lives there. We used it extensively to plan our days.
There is also a BBQ, though we did not use it.
As the house is in a tropical forest surrounding, expect to see cute little lizards scurrying around in the house sometimes.
Arriving at the Turtle House at night can be a bit difficult as it is very dark.
Our stay at the Turtle house was just lovely, and Elizabeth and Steve are lovely hosts as well! I stayed 4 nights with my boyfriend and his brother. The space was quaint, and just perfect for our needs. Everything was clean and in great working order, and our hosts were on hand should we have needed anything (which we didn't). Steve gave us great local recommendations on things to do, and also left a very helpful guide book inside the house! It was so helpful to have a kitchen so we could cook our local finds, and the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. The property is full of wonderful plants and animals, and I loved being lulled to sleep at night by all of the birds and frogs. If you're someone who needs absolute silence for sleeping, then this might not be the place for you. But if you're looking to get off the grid and immerse yourself in a Hawaiian jungle- then I highly recommend staying with Elizabeth! Mahalo!
This was the most relaxing vacation spot we had ever been! Totally off the main hustle and bustle of the big city, so expect a drive but it is very much worth it. Sleep peacefully with the chirping of frogs at night and the sound of rain. Beautiful surroundings and an excellent home to stay in with everything you need! You can cook your own meals and enjoy the morning before you head into town and the beaches! Thank you Elizabeth for a wonderful vacation with my daughters! Sue from Iowa
Spacious and well appointed one bedroom. We enjoyed Steve and Liz and would certainly stay again when in Hilo.
This place was wonderful! Just what we were looking for ... a nice clean space, a bit of seclusion, and coqui frogs and birds to sing you to sleep! We had a wonderful time, and our hosts were so gracious - they gave us tips on some cool things to visit, and we even got some eggs from the chickens running around on their grounds (they were delish).
It's not very close to much, but we didnt mind the seclusion since the drives were beautiful. Also, the dog and roosters are pretty loud in the morning, but we appreciated the natural wake-up call! These werent issues for us, but in case they are downsides for anyone I figured I should include them.
I would definitely book this place again next time we're in Hilo. We had a wonderful time in this little slice of paradise, and mahalo again to our hosts!
Everything was as expected: very spacious house in a location just isolated enough so you feel in the middle of the island and yet close to everything. Highly recommend!
