We stayed for 3 nights at the Lizard House. Elizabeth was a wonderful host providing us with amazing eggs as well as lemongrass and honey for our nasty colds. We really enjoyed our stay and loved the tropical rainforest that surrounded us. The sound of the rains on the roof, the gentle breezes and the amazing serenade of the frogs and other creatures at night were amongst the highlights of our trip. Thank you so much for your hospitality Elizabeth.
We were greeted by Steve, Elizabeth's husband. He made us feel comfortable immediately with his laid-back and casual repartee. Fresh eggs from his hens was his way of welcome, which we enjoyed very much.
There are two separate quarters available, and one is upstairs. We got the downstairs. It is a typical, modest appointed plywood structure, with a few turtle motif decorations and furnishings. Very clean, nothing fancy. The kitchen was fully equipped with a four burner electric stove, full refrigerator, and cooking utensils. The setting is rural, extremely quiet, and far from any city or traffic noises....just the natural sounds from the night denizens of the forest. If you get the downstairs unit, you will notice any and all foot traffic above you in the living room and kitchen areas below. We asked the tenants above to please walk a bit softer, and that seemed to mollify the irritation. As long as those who live above you are willing to remove their shoes and walk consciously and considerately––it won't be a problem.
All in all, my wife, daughter and myself thoroughly appreciated our stay, especially after getting to know Steve and Liz, and seeing their concern to make us as comfortable as possible.
Steve and Elizabeth gave us the aloha experience of the Big Island. We enjoyed our rest at their jungle retreat. We miss the Hawaiian weather already.
Turtle House is located a few miles south of Hilo and so has good access to activities in Hilo, the south Puna coast and Volcanoes National Park. It is also spacious for families, with a full kitchen, LED TV, wifi, set amid lush tropical vegetation. Steve and Liz welcomed us to the house, with Steve showing us around and Liz providing us with fresh eggs collected on the property -- a nice touch! Turtle House is a good home base for exploring the SE part of the island.
Our stay at Tropical Turtle House was amazing! The hosts were so lovely and welcoming. When we arrived, they explained all of the local happenings and gave us fresh eggs from their chickens, fresh butter, and fresh ground coffee. Any questions you have, they'll answer! It's also really nice that their house is on the property with you, in case you need anything.
The house is great! You have everything you need to be comfortable. A full kitchen and washer/dryer in unit were a big plus that we weren't expecting! There's a really nice King bed, a lot of seating, and great water pressure. The property is beautiful, and you're surrounded by tropical plants. At night, it sounds like you're staying in the jungle because of the local coqui frogs. The owners have adorable chickens, a dog and two cats that you may be lucky enough to see! The only slight semi-downside is that, since you're in the rainforest, it's humid in the house. That should be expected, but we didn't realize that this would affect our camera. So just be sure to keep delicate electronics in their cases!
The house is off the beaten track in a beautiful neighborhood. Pahoa village is about 15 minutes away. It's a tiny town that has good restaurants and little stores. We really enjoyed Ning's and Paulo's restaurants. You need to make a reservation at Paulo's, but Ning's you can just walk in. The hosts also told us about Maku'u Farmer's Market which is held every Sunday. It's a wonderful place for local art, food and people watching!
We loved the location because you see the stars extremely clearly and it's very relaxing. It was in a great location to explore this side of the island. Hilo is about 30 minutes away, and Volcanoes National Park in about 45 minutes away. We did day trips every day, then would either eat dinner in Pahoa or cook at the house. Just be prepared that there are not many street lights in this area, so drive slowly!
In short, we LOVED this place!
Liz and Steve were so warm and welcoming and their place was perfect for our trip! They payed so much attention to detail and assisted us when ever we needed.
The Turtle house was huge and clean and very private, the grounds itself was lush, well kept rainforest.
We felt like we were more than guests, we were welcomed in their home. We left with Aloha! :)
The host greeted us immediately on our arrival, and was very welcoming. The house is very well taken care of and nicely furnished, unfortunately, there is an odor of mildew that's pretty severe when you enter the home. The bottom cabinets also have a terrible smell. The coqui frogs are in abundance starting about 5 p.m. So if you're noise sensitive, you might consider this. The first night, I had hot water for about 15 seconds and then it turned cold. I think they need a bigger hot water heater. They cautioned us to take short showers. There were no napkins or paper towels provided, and the cutting board was less that desirable.. This particular area of the big island seems a little depressed to me. It seems there are some people in the are who don't take care of their places.
